Hmm,

Thats interesting, because I thought Korg pianos and Korg and Roland guitars always sounded 'plasticky'. For eg, Motif ES has a guitar just just sounds like U2's guitars in most of their songs. Can't say the same for any of the X's guitars even with COSM effects.

One man's 7 flavor layered milkshake is another man's poison, so each person to his own. - I for one ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Juno-G for techno and dnb, but will never ever use it for anything acoustic or orchestral (unless I get an SRX board)

Oh really? Can you give me the links to the Motif XS clips?

Where your premise is wrong is where you keep assuming that the new XS sounds like the older Motifs; nobody has even heard the new Motif XS (unless you work for Yamaha, but then you would be promoting it instead).

Dave Polich and Phil Clendenin (Yamaha pros) said that they sound very 'phat' and analog-like with immense presence.

As I said in another thread, don't judge something based on your assumption. See it, listen to it, learn it and then you can choose to love/hate it.

i dunno, i thought that the Motif / Motif ES pianos were pretty good, on parity with the F-X and better than the F-S. plus that funky yamaha piano that sounds like it's coming off an old victrola with the scratchy record sound -- that rawks.

Uhm... where were we? ;-)

Artemio, important question.

I have an issue to raise about the way Roland implemented certain sounds (on my Juno-G)....Many of the presets have sounds that have a 'click' sound (like in windows vst 'click'). This happens across the board in many categories of sounds.

For eg, in the 'Guitar' Category, 'Wet Nyln Gtr' has this sound when you hit the key with low velocity in the low registers.

'Thick Steel' makes this sound when you press a note and take your hand off they keys.

Besides this there are sounds in every category that has this click. Seems like a problem with the sample itself or the looping of the sample. It just doesn't sound right.

But that being said, the synth sounds are excellent and drum sounds are ok, effects are excellent.

Since the Juno-G really lacks quality in the guitars and somewhat in the acoustic drums, what SRX card would you recommend??

The click noise is not accidental. It is part of the patch itself. It makes the guitar sounds more realistic, as in when you pick the string of a guitar, there are various sounds, and the fantom tries to recreate this scenario.

What "doesn't sound right" to your ear in most cases was intended by sound designers. Having had the G for about 4 months I can say I never heard anything disturbing in the presets. BTW even I myself describe creating percussive click sounds to use in basses and other sounds!

Regarding guitar and drums, try out Studio SRX, it has both.

have you tried playing at different velocities to see if maybe that's why you're hearing the click? sometimes playing with a lighter touch will help.

Hi Diametro I just wanted to know what the alesis fusion is like in comparison to the fantom? Does it have nice acoustic guitar, strings and piano?

Hate to rain on yer... ah...

...parade, but er, eh...

Yeah.

If what you are saying is true, and if the Flash animation got screwed up somehow, hasn't anyone thought that maybe the "MV-8000" thing might not be exactly what the animation is even SUPPOSED to be about? Not to mention that copying and pasting the link into my web browser yielded an error page on Roland's web site.

Whatever. It doesn't matter THAT much. I'm equally curious as everyone else to learn what they ARE releasing. Hey -- is the MV-8000 even still a current product? I never know with Roland. They are more likely than any other manufacturer out there to release some awesome product, and then kill it like six months later. (See: SH 32, MC 80, MC 09 Phraselab...)

The link stopped woring since few days ago. They realized the trick and obviously removed the animation to another location.

Sammy - I totally disagree. Roland, if anything, does just the opposite - carrys products for much longer than they should. I could cite many examples, but probably no need to.

The MV-8000, BTW is still a major Roland product and is displayed prominently on their web site. It would only be discontinued if superceded by this MV-8800 people are talking about. And even then Roland might keep it around for a while.

Maybe Roland has had some bad selling products here and there, but they definitely don't kill products randomly. Check their website and product history. You'll find products that are still sold, and which may be over 10 years old.

Province,

Unfortunately, I wouldn't cite any of those areas as strong points on the Fusion ... unlike the Fantom X, which has a great sampled acoustic piano, a decent selection of good strings and nice guitars and the ability to acce$$ more better ones via SRX ...

However, in a mix, I bet the mentioned Fusion instruments would be fine ...

The Fusion has a nice soundset, but as it stands, it is focused mostly IMO on electronic and synth sounds, vintage sampled synths as well as the promise of "rolling your own" with four easy-to-use synth engines ... also, with the Fusion's full-blown sampler and HD storage, you can conceivably create your own orchestral and guitar patches from CD sample sets ...

I like the Fusion ... but with money not being involved ... I'd still take the Fantom X.

2TIM316 -- Oh, hey man -- not a big deal, ya know? I'm not like complaining bitterly or anything. I like that some of my favorite products down the years have gone down-the-tubes. I like it because it makes it more difficult, and therefore more fun, to locate whatever prouct it is that you like. For instance, I have managed to get a great deal on a V-Synth keyboard because apparently they are blowing them out.

As for the fact that they have continued to produce certain items for longer than they should have, you may be right. And as for the MV-8000, it is good that they have kept that around. I'm a bit surprised also at how the VS 2400 CD still seems to be sold. I heard that they were cutting it out to sell more VS 2000 units, but I guess that this was only a rumor.

Finally, as for the Flash video thing, again -- not that big of a deal! I guess that maybe you are right. Who knows? It is all conjecture right now. I'm just jazzed to see what happens in a little over a week.

Later.

I'm jazzed too. Especially since the Yamaha Motif XS is out of the bag and everyone's had a chance to make a bunch of educated guesses about it. So that's one less workstation to cloud the judgement when Roland and Korg make their announcements.
