Can Roland challenge the Oasys?

Re: Can Roland challenge the Oasys?

By using today technology, that Oasys is merely a target of cloning. Other manufacturer will follow the suit very quickly and easily. All Roland has to do is to use higher density and all keys sampled sound sets. The rest is just an imigination.

what I WOULD pay that much money for would be a modular work

In that case, this is what you want!!!!!!

Quinnx...

I was all like "oh yeah right, let's just see..."

A cut and paste later, I was indeed scraping my jaw off the floor & mopping up drool.

It's even cheaper than an Oasys...

Pearls of wisdom, no mistake, but I bought a Fantom-Xa anyways ;)

I also don't understand why anyone would consider the Korg, when the Neko has been out for soooo long, and there has been so little attention given to it over the years.
The Fantom X also puts you right there in competition with the OASYS anyway........it's not a clone, but there's nothing you can't do with the Fantom, that you can do with the Korg. Sure, the Korg gives you 16 audio tracks on playback, but you can only record to 4. If Roland wants to upgrade this facet of the Fantom, I hope they take aim at the much less expensive fusion, that gives you eight in's and the ability to record to at least eight tracks at a time, anything less is a joke.
Now I like a good Organ clone, but I won't settle for a clone that doesn't have the traditional set up of a B3, like the new B3, the VK, et all.......I'd much rather add a VK-8M to my rig before I get an Oasys, and have to really change my playing technique.
physical modelling.........I've never thought too much about it. I'm satisfied with the sounds we can get out of the Fantom.

I understand your position, that Roland won't make it, till we demand it, but I can't fall in line with that. I'd much rather they make a version of the openlabs NeKo, that will run CakeWalk (Sonar) Software.

Korg paid Jordan Rudess big bucks besides 3 free Oasys.
It is called "Ad while playing Gear" technique.

as i said Oasys seems fantastic...
i will try one i think in the next november here in Florence (italy)
what i want from Korg are
The Oasys Combis
The new wavestation hidden in the Oasys
The new Karma GE...

these are the reasons that have moved me in the past
when i bought first the Triton 61 classic and now the extreme 61,
the korg combis, the wavestation and the Karma GE 2
sad to say aren't clonable ,those are KORG brands ;
by the way these 3 technologies can be packed in one single rack..if Korg wants...(pleaseeee Korg...please)
that's what i hope to see in the next namms...
don't forget also that extreme is the last keyboard with Triton written on it...
we will see soon the new " Triton" and maybe this marvellous
(but so overpriced for us ...for now),features will be included...on the next Korg projecta...
i will happy to see a sort of KARMA EXTREME..

i've loved fantom and tritons then i've found my Oasys..i'm dead...i haven't money for the water...
i've loved fantom and tritons then i've found my Oasys..

Overpriced??

You want it, but you think it is overpriced??

Are we saying it is overpriced, because we can't justify spending the money on a musical instrument??

Or do we not think the Technologies in Oasys are worth the price tag??

Re: Can Roland challenge the Oasys?

My Opinion:

OASYS is overpriced because it is all recycled technology. Yes, it has been refined and improved, but is a 10% improvement in sound worth a 300% increase in cost?

The user interface is, from reading the manual, no better than a Triton. The polyphony is what would be expected in a Triton successor: double the current 120 voices and may even fall short of that.

By putting it into a heavy, expensive looking case and encrusting it with extra LEDs and a PDA-like touch screen we are supposed to accept that it is worth $8000.

What's even more disturbing is that there have been no guarantees on expansion, not even a "we're thinking of doing...".

OASYS sales will plummet from their already low volume, the product will be discontinued, and its resale value will be in the $2-3000 range withing a year or two when the rich folks get bored with it.

Considering what Roland and Yamaha will come out with in the next year all we have to do is wait and we will see technology like this trickle down into the price range of current Fantoms/Motifs.

I am a big fan of the Neko. It is powerful, has unlimited exansion, and is fairly priced. What is lacking is a user interface app that turns it into a workstation. There are too many layers of software that get in the way of creativity. After all it is still a PC.

What we need is a workstation that is essentially a Fantom that can also accept VST plugins.

That would rock, and I would sell all of my gear to get one!!!

Recycle.....??? Not so....! This is not a Triton or Karma on steroids. The technology has been totally revamped (with the exception of the sequencer). Here, check these out. The sounds are exactly what you get. There was no overdubbping or post production at all. The passages were played by Robert Sands, a multiple Emmy Award winning composer and a long time customer at Russo Music Centre. Demo's 1- 9 are selected Combinations (Perfermances in Roland speak) and 10 - 11 are Programs (Patches).

-or-

http://www.russomusic.com/New_Index/Korg/korg.html

Until you've actually sat down with an instrument and challenged it's functions and capabilities, you really can't make assessments that are valid.

The only comment that I agree with is that it's too expensive. Of course, that's a relative statement.

Eric

it's overpriced for me,
i can't afford it...but i really like it...
and it's overpriced 'cause it's too new...this won't remain
the final price forever.,well i hope time will solve this
and it's overpriced 'cause its technology is basically a P4 + Lynux
without the VST ability
(Karma Ge2+Wavestation+Combis..this is the real Oasys..for me
and i think it won't be impossible to put it in a Rack, even if i don't think that Korg will do this now ,maybe in namm 2007)
then namm is very close...only 3 months...
so just to finish...
yes i like it...but i won't to buy so soon
the next is too close to come

i've loved fantom and tritons then i've found my Oasys..i'm dead...i haven't money for the water...

Hi Eric,

I listened to the demos. Again I will state that the following is my OPINION just so we are clear that I am not stating any facts.

The playing and musicianship are fantastic, but it still sounds like a Triton. The tones are plasticy. The drums don't sound any more like a real drum kit than my Fantom or my Motif ES. The synth tones are excellent, but then there have been many synths made in the last 10 years that produce excellent synth tones like the OASYS. I recently picked up an old K2000 rack for $150 and loaded some analog synth emulations into it. Now there is a classic piece of gear that can sound like so many different classics and yet still do the more current ROMPLER sounds and it is 15 year old technology.

Come on Korg, where is the innovation?!?!?!

"This is not a Triton or Karma on steroids." That's exactly what it is! It's Korg, it has the Triton user interface, Triton sequencer, Karma (probably the only thing brilliant about it is what Stephen Kay has brought to the instrument), and a rudimentary mulitrack recorder built in.

I had the money to buy one of these things if I sold all of my gear and put some bonuses toward it, but I've been duped too many times before by promises that something is the end-all-be-all.

Back to the topic at hand: Can Roland Challenge the OASYS? Yes, and quite easily. They just have to decide to do it.
