Calling Percussionists ...

Hi guys

Apologies for the "mini" flood of posts but I'm on a steep learning curve!!!

Ok - I'm a bit stuck trying to create a "cymbal roll" on the Fantom S going from very quiet to medium loud. And of course the length of the roll needs to be easily adjusted to fit the tempo. Can anyone offer an "easy" method for creating this on the Fantom S please?

I owe you all DOES BEERS!

Duh ... got brain freeze again ... it's the roll function on the pads yeah?

Ummmm ... well I'm almost there guys with this cymbal roll but it sounds kinda "harsh"? Is there anyway of softening the affect? Is it purely down to the drum kits I'm using? I guess I need the effect of the kinda sticks they use in an orchestra on the Timps but I can't figure out how to get this nice soft crescendo on the Fantom S ...

Any ideas please ???

Try going into microscope mode and ramping up the velocities as you get further into the roll.

Also, you could program the cymbal's filter to open up as the velocity increases. If you need help with that, ask and I'll help you figure it out.

Hi Midiguru

Thanks for the reply! YES PLEASE any help with the filter settings would be much appreciated. The song is a very atmospheric ballad and I'm to achieve a very smooth crescendo on the cymbal. I'm really a "hands-on-keys" kinda guy and struggle with the programming/tweaking stuff.

Any settings you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Further to last message, I've discovered that the on the Fantom S it's the GM:215 patch (reverse cymbal) effect that I want but you can't edit this patch - but that's the sound I'm looking for ... any ideas?

Help please guys ...

This "small" problem is driving me nuts ... I'm a novice on the Fantom S especially when it comes to sampling.

I want to be able to "modify" the GM:215 patch (reverse cymbal) in terms of it's length so that it can fit my song.

So far I've managed to sample it but am unsure how to lengthen it in "sample edit". I tried to stretch it but it just chopped up the sound ... !!!

HELP PLEASE ANYONE ... THANKS !!!

Find the wave form that the GM patch is using. Then create your own patch putting that same waveform in it. You don't have to edit from that GM patch, just initialize a patch and use the wave that the GM patch is using.
or, another way to do it is, use a non-reversed cymbal. In other words use a normal sounding cymbal. To get the harshness out just take some attack out of the cymbal. Actually I do it with 2 keys. Put the cymbal on 2 keys, really take out some attack, then hit the keys, or the pads, really fast and do it harder as you go, just like you would do if you were hitting a cymbal with mallets. Then you can make the swell as fast or as slow as you want. The key is taking attack off the cymbal sounds though so the crescendo is smooth.

You cant find the waveform the GM patch is using since it cant be edited (thus the wvefrm info cant be viewed).

Try this :

Create a patch with a cymbal reverse on it (look it up in the waveform list) and play across the range of the keyboard to see which tempo suits you the best, or sample a reverse, slow down the tempo a little bit, and then sample it again, and slow down the tempo a little bit again. I'm not sure about the second method, but i'm guessing that it would work.
