Right now, i'm 17 and will be turning 18 on September. People, i thought i was too old for making it big time. i even consulted some advice from other forums. now someone convince me that i'm not too old please....

Ah the youth of sambasevam !!!!

sambasevam, do yourself a favor, printout a copy of this thread, save it, and look at it in 30 or 35 years--- I guarantee you'll laugh at yourself -- " i used to feel young at 14;...too old for making it big time..." cute, that put a smile on my face!

You are only as old as you feel. Stay active, physically and mentally, and most importantly enjoy being with friends and family...

Point 1. There is no such thing as too old. I never even learned how to play a guitar until I was 25. I am no big star or anything but, I have ghost written quite a few songs that have made Number 1. Willy Nelson had been writing songs for others for nearly 20 years before he ever started singing them himself. You may not be a country fan, still it says alot about age and this industry.

Point 2. Age is purely a state of mind. Most importantly always be willing to learn and try new things. They have discovered that this helps to ward off alzheimer's and if you have never seen the efx of alzheimer's take my word for it when I tell you that it is one affliction you absolutely positively do not want to be involved with.

I'm 24,

10 February 1981.

I wouldn't worry about not making it at 17/18, you seriously have heaps of time!!

I got into music when I was 16-17 but could not really afford it until recently (after university). I only started learning the piano half way through last year, which is my first musical instrument!

Dont get caught up in getting there, just have fun in the process!!

I need to ask, how do you guys afford a fantom at 17?

39 and going 40 in a month...........Jesus Christ.

Well at least I'm in great shape physically, my cycling season just restarted and I did 110 km with my racing bike in the last 3 days (around 36 per day). I also restarted some small weight lifting. (I allways do a break in winter.)

And I'm doing fine with my FS.

Steph3dfx,

Another cyclist! Great way to stay in shape. I do 20-30 miles each evening after work 3-4 days a week, and 30-40 miles on a weekend day. By the way, I am 52 and also do free weights 3 days a week for upper body work.

Our season here has started late. . . . snow again this morning, so I am still pedaling on the trainer. Can't wait to hit the trails. . . .

You're only as 'old' as you allow yourself to feel. As pianodick said, keep learning. I am currently learning Sanskrit, studying for a certification in alternative medicine, and dealing with the Fantom.

Thank you guyz for the encouragement.

What depresses me sometimes is that i read in a lot of forums that it is next to impossible to get big time, and that people just say this and that but you never really make it. one more thing is : i used to have a LOT (beleive me) of musical activity on stage cos when i was 16 and before, i played in a band, played the keys for the choir EVERY DAY in my school, played for lot of competitions, formed my own band and we rocked out and all that.

now, i feel like the world has come to an end! i just feel like it. i dunno how i can explain. i feel like i'm not gonna be living a worthy life at all. sorta afraid of growing up.

now my parents take care of me, but what do i do in return? thats what bugs THE HELL outta me everyday. infact, when i see people going for jobs and they're 16, i feel envious. i feel like junk. thats what. i feel like junk. when i see people in forums talk about how they have singers singing like this and that and how they have good clients and all that "big" talk, i feel envious. i dunno, i just feel like i'm gonna end up nowhere at this rate.

when i was 16 and played with my band (i also did solo), i sat down a day, practiced a lot of runs and set a reminder in my mind saying "this is how you played when you're 16. lets see how better you can play the next time" and now, when i select a rhodes patch and try my playing skills, i dont see any improvement AT ALL, and i've already wasted a freakin year. If i had stayed in india, i would have got my music diploma (ATCL or equivalent) and i would have been satisfied. this must have happened a YEAR ago, cos i finished Gr.8 solo piano in 15. i wasted f**** 2 years doing nothing! the hell with me. i was my piano teacher's favorite student and she made me a role model for everyone and treated me like i belong to her. she prepared me for two different colleges in the same year when i got grade 8 in piano. i cant forget those theory lessons that i took till 11:30 P.M in her house. 11:30, P.M. outta her own interest and she didnt take an extra penny for that. my mom insisted she did, but she was very very reluctant. tell me where i can find another one in this universe like my old piano teacher? if i'd been with her, all my life wouldn't have been wasted. 2 years, i coulda happily played in a cottage piano and i woulda felt confident. even now, it gives me the shudders and makes me angry to think that for two years, i didnt have the oppurtunity to play on hammered keys. i've been spoiling my hands on a feather-light keybed and i bet when i return to india, she;s gonna ask me "sambasevam, did you finish learning that 2nd movement i told you to practice?? "

right now, if someone were to ask me, "alright sonny boy. tell me what you can do in music..." what could i tell them? all i can tell is "i got a Fantom S " and he's gonna go "yeah, for 1400 dollars, what did you do? does the radio play your music? can u play any sonatas in your fantom? "

i dunno what to say. i keep imagining all the time. most of the times, i wish i had the money to get a 88-true hammer action board. most of the time, i'm fooling myselves doing some stupid sequencing and finally it sounds like crap.

guyz, deep apologies for letting my heart out. sometimes, it feels good to tell your problems to someone else. i think i'll feel somewhat better. yes, some people might think that 17 is young and i'm happy if it really is, but that's another point. i've seen kids at age 15 and blasting the s*** outta the piano. see "Malcom in the middle" and Dewey really plays the piano like that, even in his real life.

sorry for the rant....ignore it if you feel its a waste of database space....i've let it all out. now i feel better a little bit.

21 here, 22 in july, i feel like i'm 18. I act like i'm 18. i am in university.
i have no fuckin clue what to do with my life and the fact that i feel like i am 18 deceives me. For some reason i think i have all the time in the world to make up my mind, but i don't.

I still live at home, so in that respect i guess i'm lucky.

but the time quickly approaches when my parents will make a move to make me move out, not that they will kick me out, but i feel that they think i should leave soon. they left their homes when they were 18. i feel the pressure mounting.

I feel nowhere near ready to leave, like i said i feel like i am 18. I feel like i can support myself, certainly financially, i make more than any of my friends, infact i make what some 50 yearolds make in a year, but it's just fucked up leaving your family. It's hard to explain..

you asked how old we are. well i guess i gave you more than you asked for, but i am really drunk. i feel awkwardly introverted and want to dump on somebody. From my breif experience, you guys are amazing. Most boards really flame newbies, this board encourages them to explore their creative beings. That is why i love you guys and that is why i am dumping my emotions here. I trust you guys.

I just got my fantom and am learning it now, it is crazy powerful and complex. it's Complexity shows me that it has few limits. I can't wait to master this wild beast and post my MP3's for you guys to critique. Since i know you guys are encouraging i wont hesitate you show you my progress as i learn.

Thank you all, and sorry for my emotional outburst!!! but i finished my university exams and i'm drunk on a mondaynight so i think i can be excused! anyway PEACE OUT FRIENDS!

i have 2 jobs, one working for my parents' business, and the other working at this music store (where i have purchased all the stuff i own): http://www.midimusicshop.net.

i've worked for my parents since i was 14. i started working during the summer after my freshman year of high school. i worked hard for 6 months and saved up enough money to be able to buy an XP-30 by December. a year later, i had almost enough money to be able to buy a Fantom-S, and my parents helped me out with the rest as a christmas present. i later traded in my XP-30 to the store that i now work at for an m audio Firewire 410 (to go with the Powerbook G4 i had recently purchased, with a generous donation from my parents).

i'm fortunate enough to have parents that not only support me in my hobby, but also give me a car to drive, and take care of all my bills (insurance, cell phone...). i know i sound spoiled, but trust me, i dont take it for granted.

i've been working at the music store since this last december, and it's been awesome. the owner is the nicest guy in the world. im his first employee, he's been running his business by himself for 5 years. it's a really nice, laid back job.
