Cross Fade Volume Between 2 zones

Cross Fade Volume Between 2 zones

18 Apr 2022, 14:18
Hello,

I have a scene with two zones. I would like to use my pedal to raise the volume of Zone 1 while decreasing volume of Zone 2
Having a hard time finding a parameter or section to do this.

Please don't hit me with the "Montage Superknob" thing, as I own a MODX and am aware. Also, on my Korg Nautilus there's an edit section where I can reverse the pedal behavior for each zone i.e. Zone 1 Pedal min = 0, Pedal Max = 127 Zone 2 pedal min = 127, Pedal Max = 0

I have found where I can adjust these on the Fantom -08, but it seems to be by scene, and not by zone.

Any help or direction is appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,
So far I have the same question. My only solution until now is, creating a User tone which reacts to the Pedal with destination of level. So the configuration happens in Tone and not Zone or Scene. Would love to find a solution in Zone Level.

Hi Escaperocks,
Well... it's not the "Super Knob" but something similar ;-)
I believe there is a way to do that by using the Motional Pad and assign it to the (up-to 4) Zones you want to control, but for that you will have to use the finger...
maybe by using the Matrix Control... need to see that more in depth, as I'm also interested to know that myself, as a potential near future Fantom-0 owner

Yes, the motional pad function specifically lets you crossfade volume among multiple zones, similar to one of the functions of Yamaha's Superknob. Yamaha realized that sometimes you wouldn't be able to spare a hand, so they allow you to assign a pedal to the superknob function. Nord Stage can also do the same thing with its morph function, which likewise has an option to assign it to a foot pedal. But that would be harder to do with the motional pad. The Superknob and the Nord morph have linear travels from point A to point B. The motional pad doesn't insist you move in a straight line from point to point... essentially, it has two axes instead of one, so that wouldn't adapt well to a pedal. I don't know whether there is or isn't some way to get the desired plain 2-zone crossfade out of a pedal. If not, I suppose the closest you could come might be to use the sustain pedal to hold what you're playing in order to free a hand to manipulate the pad...?

You are joking, aren't you...?

Comparing the Roland Motional pad to the Yamaha SuperKnob is comparing a Ford T (first wave of cars) with a Saturn V ( a three-stage, liquid-fueled super heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by NASA under the Apollo program ).

😀😀😀😀

SuperKnob is the main reason pushing me towards Yamaha.

I'm just saying it is a function they have in common. The Superknob can certainly do a whole bunch of other stuff. And as it happens, the Superknob cannot do exactly what the motion knob does. But the one function we're talking about happens to be something they can both do.

I know...

I gave up using that pad after a little while...

I have to give it another try...

Out of curiosity, what do you find so great about the Superknob? It's the one thing on the Yamahas I'm incredibly underwhelmed by in terms of the marketing and seeing what people talk about. It doesn't seem to me to do anything new or different - it just lets you do several things you could already do but at the same time - something that it seems you could largely accomplish already by other methods.

If it's anything like the Zenology plugin (and I think it's intended to be) you can certainly do this for different partials within a single tone by targeting the level with one controller to and setting (if I recall) the sensitivity positive for one and negative for the other. Depending on what you are trying to do exactly that might be one way to accomplish it.

Thanks guys.

I found a way to do it using Matrix Control
You can also do it with the sliders. Just assign two sliders... example Slider 1, and slider 2 to CC-07 volume In that scene, have one slider go from 0-127 when you push it up, and the other go 127- 0 when you push it up.

As far as the SuperKnob, most people barely scratch the surface with what it can do. It takers some seriously deep diving but you can pretty much set it up to control any and every thing in each program. Like the Roland Motional Pad, you can also automate it. and set the limits of that automation.

Once you have everything you want assigned to the SuperKnob, you can assign a foot pedal to it (from the factory its FC2
I found it to be far from underwhelming

Now then, this is a Roland Forum, so that's why I am here. They all have their pluses and minuses.

On this new Fantom-0 in my case the -08, you can also do some very deep diving as far as tone, zone, and scene editing. Once you wrap your head around the Roland Matrix mode, it starts to make sense. That's where I am now and the lightbulbs are going off :)

Lazerlike42, the performances I have seen so far via the SuperKnob or its assigned pedal (a must have) are truly astounding.

https://yamahasynth.com/learn/montage/mastering-montage-1-super-knob

All the efforts I have made so far via matrix with Fantom turned out to be performed too quickly, their progress almost unnoticed, far from what I pretended, be it pitch or volume, my very simple two goals for the first stages into the matrix as I went discovering the staggering features Fantom has to offer.
It is felt as if while performing a glissando from A2 to A6 you just happen to hear A2 and suddenly A6 and nothing in between. It works, but neither at the pace nor with the many subtle details I wished.

I mean, say you achieve something by moving wheel 2 slowly for some two good seconds...Is there a way to do that via the matrix..? How are the many steps available in each matrix spaced ? Are those steps to be equally spaced in time or can be adjusted as desired ? I would love to know...

Also, SuperKnob seems to operate a bit as our zone offset, away from the tone, so no need to go saving tonnes of tones.

Maybe it amounts to use case. I don't tend to want to do a bunch of evolving variations on synth sounds, but to take acoustic instruments and create a relatively realistic sounding performance or ensemble performance from them. The only thing I've seen that knob used for with acoustic instruments is people applying various unnatural sounding filters to the sounds or Bad Mister's somewhat unconvincing ensemble->solo string demonstration.

And anything about my questions dealing with matrix behaviour, please ?

Despite the very good sounds, during the time I owned a MODX (a few Months), I've never used the Superknob as never felt the need to use it. The mess complexity (meaning, not very intuitive) of Yamaha MODX performance wise, made me sell it as quickly as possible (maybe that was my lack of understanding on how it operates...

When you fade a zone's volume to 0, does it disable the zone to save polyphony or is it still on consuming polyphony (but you can't hear it)? I'm trying to see if there's another way without the zone switch.
