Velocity Range Upper to mute parts, reclaim polyphony
22 Feb 2022, 12:43Update: There is a better way: Use the Sw (Rx Switch) column in Part View.
Original post:
Note that this almost certainly won't solve the needs of a live performer.
Background: As many forum posts have noted, mute is an audio-only function. If you mute a track, the sequenced notes — whether sequenced internally or externally — still consume polyphony. This can lead to running out of polyphony when many tracks are used and muted.
There is an alternative to mute. In Part View, setting the V.U column (Velocity Range Upper) to 1 effectively disables and silences a part by stopping midi notes with a velocity greater than 1. A part silenced this way uses no polyphony. It works for tracks being played or sequenced internally, or externally.
I hope this helps someone!
