Fantom-S and Fantom-X

X Questions

I just want to make some questions for X users.

Well, if my destiny is purchase a Fantom-X one day, for sampling purposes, what are the capabilities of a microdrive?
I'm asking this because I saw somebody here talking about putting a microdrive on the slot so I am able to use it for more data storage space.
And what are the prices of a microdrive and/or PC card, in case I should use one and/or other for storing data on the X?

I'm planning and have asked for Roland to notify me when the X is exposed on their show room so I can review it, because when things are interesting for Roland Brazil they always send an invitation by e-mail.
It's all up to my sircunstances, but I guess that I'll probably do what I wouldn't like to do, for some reasons of mine.

Thanks

Edu, the FS series can have u to 288 Mb RAM and store up to 128 Mb data on a Smart Media card. The new FX series can have up to 512 Mb RAM and store up to 1 Gb* on a Compact Flash card.

* several people reported that a 2 Gb card works as well.

For me, dealing with several small SM cards is more convenient than using one large CF card with an endless sample list.

Hi E.Camargo.

I was able to (almost) successfully use a 2 GB microdrive in the Fantom-X8. I say "almost" because both 2 GB microdrives were defective and I gave up on that brand of drive. I did get as far as saving some files and importing some AIFF files with the Fantom-X8 using the 2 GB microdrive, and the FX did recognize all 2 GB as available, but both drives I tried had a number of bad sectors (eBay store, bah) so I sent both back and got my money back.

Keep this in mind though, transfer rate was still SLOW (compared to transfer rate of drive when inserted into my laptop using the same PC card adapter).

Nathan and Artemio, thanks for replying.

Just some adds, please forgive my ignorance.

Now let's suppose that I will use this 1gb of compact flash to store data and I would like to use it on the X.
If I have the X full expanded (544), what happens with the RAM when using the 1gb cf card? Would I have the samples loaded correctly? Should I make some extra works like loading the rest of the samples from the card, etc?

And what about the cost of these medias?

And the memory questions are:

If I use 4 expansion boards, will I be able to use 544 mb of RAM without restrictions?
Can I expand the memory using a single DIMM of 512?

Living some experiences with the S made me see that I'll be needing a sampler, and I guess that the X's sampler capabilities are excelent for what I need. And for my purposes I feel that cf will be a bit convenient.

It's very soon to think on the X, but getting these extra informations will help me very much.

Thanks in advance for replying, and for their considerations with some missing informations.

With a 1 GB card you can store more/bigger samples on the card than would fit into the 544MB of ram. This gives you the flexibility to load in different sets of samples, but each set must be no bigger than the 544MB of installed RAM.

For example: You could have song 1 with 200MB of samples. Song 2 Has 344MB of samples. Song 3 has 450MB of samples.

You may load only song 1, 2, or 3. You may load song 1 and 2. You may load song 3. You can't load any other combination of songs because there is too much sample data to load.

With a 2 GB card you would be able to save 6 of these songs without having to swap cards.

You will have to manually select which files you load at the sample list page. So you could have samples 1-100 for song 1, samples 200-300 for song 2, etc.

1 GB cards are going for $200 US lately. No restrictions on memory with all 4 SRX (you can use it all). Memory is expanded with a single 512MB DIMM.

Ask if you have any more questions...

Thanks MIDIGuru.
The fact is that I use the internal flash for storing sequencing data. I've been tryed using the "save s+s" here in my S using another card to leave the internal memory free for other informations, but when I've swapped the card and loaded the song with the samples, one of the samples have presented problems like 2 channels with diferent pitches. So for securety reasons I use the flash for MIDI data and when needed I transport them to my PC, and viceversa.

I just use the card like an aditional sound card, with hundreds of samples and some patches rebuilt from some presets.

At least you don't need to feel limited with ROM/RAM restrictions.

And what about the microdrives prices: Are they a bit cheeper? What tips do you give?

Thanks again for your tremendous support.

Oi E. Camargo.
Ex: Toque forte = F#2-FF, Toque meio forte = F#2F toque meio fraco=F#2-MP etc...

1. Pressione "edit";
2. Pressione "F1" ou "F2" até localizar a página "TMT";
3. Mova o cursor para baixo até encontrar o item "Velo Range Lower" (velocity range lower) e ajuste o valor mínimo com o qual o tone vai soar;
Pronto! Seu patch já está perfeitamente combinado.

Qualquer dúvida volte a escrever.
