XR replacing X7, transfering sounds?

XR replacing X7, transfering sounds?

7 May 2010, 06:28
Hi all, I've just picked up a Fantom XR to replace my X7 (yeah, I know weird, but I want to get a Hammond)
All my Performances, Patches, & samples are stored on a 1G card inserted in the X7.
The XR came with a 4G card, so I'd like to transfer my stuff from the 1G to the 4G.
What's the easiest way to accomplish this?
As well, any idea whether the editor/librarian that came with the X7 (bought in 2007) will still be compatible with the XR (v 1.03)

Thanks,
Dan

Just copy your card contents to an empty folder in your computer, and then after formating your target card on the Fantom Xr , drag and drop the two folders Roland and TMP; it will ask if you want to overwrite, say yes.
All of this process is using the storage mode, for wich you have to change first both Fantom X and Xr to Usb mode on system settings.

Thanks Karlo, I figured that would be the method, just wanted to confirm.

watch out!!!
I have a friend with a Fantom-X7 and my Fantom-XR (sample tools expansion) card WAS NOT WORKING on X7 (1.03) but I didn't try his card on my Fantom-XR.
So you better test it.
Maybe from a earlier version will be read by the new...
But you never know.

It should work straight away. If it doesn't work though 1) copy the samples manually, 2) transfer the patches/performances using the Librarian.

Thanks guys. I ended up just swapping the card from my X7 into the Xr. I checked the memory usage on the X7 card, and it was so low, I just decided to sell the larger card with the X7.

BTW, while I have your attention, I have a question about Performance mode on the Rolands.
My setup consists of a Yamaha S70XS, a Fantom X7, & Dave Smith PolyEvolver.
I use the S70XS in Master mode to change all my patches on the X7 & PolyEvolver when playing live.
Now that I have the Xr, my plan was to layer Performances from the Xr across the S70XS' keyboard, and herein lies the problem.
I have the Xr setup (as I did on my X7), to change Performances on channel 16, and Patches on channel 2, which works fine when using the X7.
However with the Xr, the only sound that is playing across the S70XS' keyboard at the moment is the sound of the Performance that is on channel 2 of that Performance..
I don't want to bore you guys with too many details, but most of the guys on other message boards tell me that they don't use their Roland's in Performance mode, just Patch.
I'm beginning to understand why, it doesn't work too well.
My problem now is whether I should just keep the X7, & sell the Xr, as using the Xr solely in Patch mode is pretty limiting (I've got a lot of Performances setup for my band).
Do any of you guys use your Xr's in Performance mode midi'ed to a master keyboard?
Are all your layers/splits, etc maintained?

Thanks much,
Daniel

I used my fantom-xr live...
and in performance mode ONLY.
But I changed live only the performances, I wasn't using the same performance for all the songs and change the patches inside... because we have a small playlist (our songs and some covers .... about 50-60 songs).
So it was easy to make performance settings for each song, not saving the patches shortcuts (CC00/32/PC).
That because I use all the MFX, and the 2 send FX as well different from performance to performance.
As gear, I used an old VA3, then a GW7 (as midi controller).
So because they have split on ch 4 and 11, I used to make all the settings this way.
The patches that I want to use for upper?
All the parts with those patches were set on the 4 midi ch ...
the lower parts on the 11 ;)
so all you have to do is this:
set channel for input
if you have only one, you will have to set the upper/lower note for each part, isf you have multichannel midi (layers on the midi controller), you can set on every layer > channel> the part you want to use in the performance mode.
more details:
let's say you are in performance mode...
and the midi controller is transmiting only on midi ch 1.
set the part 1, 2,3 on midi ch 1, and set the lower note to C4.
set the part 4.5.6 on the midi ch 1 too, but set the upper note on B3
Now you will have from C4> >>> part 1,2 and 3, and down from B3, the part 4,5 and 6.
understand?
now this is an exemple with split by channels ...
4 and 11.

Thanks cminor, it sort of makes sense. I think I'm losing a little in translation, but I really appreciate your effort.
I'm using 1 Performance per song as well, not 1 Performance and changing the Patches inside, just to be clear.
I'll give it a shot tonight. Any other examples you can think of would be great.
I'd really like to get this working.
What type of file did you attach? I can't open it.

Daniel

The most easiest way to get 200% of what fantom-xr can bring:
the software
those are some settings for my band, saved from the Fantom-XR Editor (PC/Mac software)
It is more intuitive and fast to work with the software, then on that little screen.
So install the Editor and go File>load that attachment ;) and see what I did on performance for some songs ;)

I'd keep the X and sell the Poly Evolver :P (just joking)
Isn't V-Combo more versatile a keyboard than Hammond? Plus you'll get some stuff from your X too...
Cminor, I'd like to talk to you (these are off-topic matters so we'd better take it somewhere else - yahoo messenger, e-mail, etc. take your pick).

I've decided I'm going to dump the Xr. The prices that used X7's are fetching around here is a joke. I'd be giving up too much.
I think I'm going to get an XK1 instead of the XK3c.
Thanks anyway.
