Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fantom G

Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fantom G

Hi everyone, like a lot of people I am trying to decide between the Motif XS and the Fantom G. It's hard to get an unbiased evaluation of these machines since the youtube videos featuring each board feature different performers and different songs and different sound compression levels. In addition, when browsing forums for opinions there is often one or more persons who insist on using CAPS LOCK to rage about how this and that board sucks, and such. I want to show some of these so that I do not take such criticisms for granted.

Here is a post on the Korg forums:

Until ROLAND WAKES UP AND SMELLS THE COFFEE, gets their HEAD OUT OF THEIR ASS and GIVES US THE UPDATE WE NEED, the Fantom-G is NOTHING MORE than a SCRATCH PAD! PERIOD! I WANT THAT PATTERN GRID FROM THE FANTOM-X AND FOR GOD SAKES, MAN, LET US USE THE MOUSE TO MOVE, ERASE AND EDIT ON THE PIANO ROLL!!! Jesus! The next legend MY ASS! LOL! UPDATE THAT SEQUENCER and we will be fine! THERE'S A REASON WHY I HAVE TWO FANTOM-X8'S! SEQUENCING, SRX EXPANSION, AND SAMPLING! PERIOD!

And another follow-up post from the same thread:

Regarding the Fantom, ONLY get it if you can NOT live without an all-in-one solution that does your vocals (Audio), has a Sequencer (MIDI) and has some decent sounds to get your ideas rolling. The Fantom-G is great for that. A LOT of great features. But it's got a LOT of shortcomings, too, that make this keyboard look REALLY bad and makes Roland look REALLY bad, too. I own one of the these and it's a very cool keyboard, but the "small" missing features that were NOT inherited from the Fantom-X are CRUCIAL to almost everyone that wants to make FULL use of its capacity to Record and Edit in Audio and MIDI. Features like an Undo function, a Pattern Grid like what the Triton has but a LOT MORE flexible and more than twice the length (up to 8 bars on the Fantom-X vs. 2 1/2 bars on the Triton). Also be aware that the Fantom-G is capable of using a mouse (instead of a touchscreen) to edit parameters, change settings, etc. BUT! It's NOT fully implemented! You can't drag the notes on the Piano Roll editor to shorten, lengthen, or even move them from one place to another (i.e. another measure)! You can't copy notes very easily from one place to another. AND! You can't CREATE notes, either! NOT with the mouse! THIS is what I mean by Roland f*ck*ng up the Fantom-G that INFURIATES ME! Sequencer Resolution (in the case of the OASYS's 192PPQN Sequencer) is one thing and that can EASILY be fixed with an update and thus, UNLIKE the Fantom-G ,DESPITE the "better" Sequencer it has, the OASYS Sequencer is actually COMPLETE and it WORKS! VERY WELL, might I add!

I have a friend that owns a music shop here in Reseda, CA called Kaye's Music Scene. He specializes in Arranger Keyboards, but also has Workstation Keyboards. But guess what? He STOPPED carrying Roland because they can't seem to get their CRAP together!

This is why I'm telling you to stay away from the Fantom-G. It's NOT the keyboard Roland is claiming it to be! Not even CLOSE! Roland has been a marketing GIMMICK in the past 2 years and it's REALLY pissing me off! The Fantom-X was AMAZING! It just needed a better Synth Engine and better converters! Had they KEPT the ENTIRE Fantom-X feature set and actually IMPROVED it's functionality with the bigger screen, the realtime controllers, and the GORGEOUS new user interface of the Fantom-G with all the improvements it currently has, with FULL mouse support, AND added a NEW Synth Engine with better converters, the Fantom-G would be a no brainer! Bar none! But they HAD to screw it up! They HAD hype it up and make it THE WORST "improved" workstation in their ENTIRE history! WOW!

But like I said, ONLY get the Fantom-G IF you can NOT live without an all in one solution for your vocals and ideas.

Sina

P.S. the Motif ES vs. the XS is night and day! The XS has TWICE the ROM memory, better effects, an AMAZING new Synth Engine, and a MUCH better Sequencer and Screen! It's about TIME they offer a big screen! The ES was a BITCH to use because of that small ancient screen! lol But the XS is SWEET! The sounds, the drums, the unbelievable inspiration that makes this thing an absolute JOY to play is amazing!

Now I first want to say I am not a troll; hence I am posting these not to make you mad but to ask for an objective response.

First some notes:
- I want a keyboard that is very versatile across many different styles of music. Classical and Orchestral, Hip-hop, Jazz, Techno, on and on.
- I want a reliable and capable sequencer.
- I am looking for good acoustic/classical sounds from a keyboard. The keyboards and classical/acoustic/electric guitars are of special importance to me. I have heard that Motif is generally better for acoustic instruments, while The Fantom is better for Synthy sounds, but some roland users claim that some Fantom acoustic voices shine with some filtering, such as the Piano.

So my two questions are:
- What are the major differences between the Fantom G and the Motif XS? In what ways do each keyboard win over the other? What deficiencies does each board have?
- How do you answer the above criticisms? Are the deficiencies claimed for the Fantom also present in the Motif?
- Also, I will be testing the individual keyboards myself soon, but I realize there are many pros and cons I will not notice in that short test session.

Thanks very much in advance! Cool points to whoever responds!

" I am not a troll"...

I guess it really doesnt matter whether you are or you are not. IF you were looking for objective opinion you would not visit either a roland, Korg or yamaha forum, nor listen to a music dealer who is biased by profit margins and revenue above all else...

An old adage springs totally to mind.. "a bad workman always blames his tools"

There is no perfect board, Each to his own and the compromises that they represent... I made up my own mind, looked at objective (not user), reviews and checked forums solely for issues of reliability and major flaws.

Given the content of your post i would suggest you to just go get a motif... after all, how could you possibly tell your friend you bought a crappy Roland Fantom? :)

Thanks for replying, Mystic. I just want to qualify what you are saying.

I am here because I am favoring the Motif in my purchase decision, and I feel that some criticisms of the Fantom that influenced that choice may have been overblown or unjustified. That is why I am posting in this forum, because I want to hear what users of the Fantom G can tell me in response to such claims.

Surely there is no perfect tool but bringing up the adage you mentioned in the context you mentioned completely throws economic discernment out the window. Is it any sin for the musician, however experienced or inexperienced, to try and look for the best tool he can use, especially if it costs $3000?

When I say that I would like objective evaluations I am technically expecting subjective answers. Because really, what isn't subjective besides specifications like "300 MB Wave Rom", "128 voice polyphony", etc? Even "official" reviews will says things like "great sounding", "User-friendly", etc. When I ask for objective opinions, I mean it in the informal sense; I would like opinions (that are specific like "This feature is a bit glitchy" rather than"Motif sux") as well as specific information.

If nothing else, I am asking for a reliable set of relative pros and cons that I will not be able to generate with a 30-minute trip to guitar center.

...and my friends couldn't care less what keyboard I get. I know better than to fall into endless regret after I buy something; I'll be perfectly happy and make do with what I have after my decision has been made. (That is, after the 30-day return period) :D

Man its easy, stop looking at videos to see what the masses like, go to the store and BUY WHAT YOU LIKE, thats the only way you will feed your creativity. It doesnt matter if a million people like something if you aint feelin it you aint going to make great music on it. And also man dont get caught up in over kill , Try to decide what instrument is going to keep your creativity moving not fumbling through menues and buttons unless you just like that kinda thing. At the end of the day man a groove is a groove and no matter how you get to it, just get on something and do it let other people ask damn what is he using how does he do that. Stop talking about your music, and just make some and have fun life is too short. Hope this helps.......

Here is how I chose: I read manuals of major workstations around. At the end, I felt that the G was the best for my needs. BTW, I do not regret my choice!!

Try them out and make up your own mind. It is your mind after all. Then you will have no one to blame but yourself. Sorry but the truth is you have to try before you buy.

Re: Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fant

Yea. I would say try both and see what you think. Though I will tell you(I bought a Fantom G6 about 3 weeks or so ago), that the G brought back my love for music and writing. I had an Alesis Fusion and it was an all in one solution like the Fantom, but the sounds were(for the most part) unusable and I got very frustrated for a very long time because the technicalities(not finding sounds I liked) were destroying my creativity. So much so, that I stopped writing for more than a year.

The G has great sounds, a great onboard sequencer and great expansion possibilities. If you are looking for a keyboard with awesome acoustic guitar sounds, look no further. It was the first sound set I checked when firing up the keys for the first time. The 12 String Studio sounds as good or better than my 12 String I have sitting in my studio. No other word describes it, but heavenly. Not only does it sound incredible, the expression(pluck of the strings before the first note played) is absolutely mind blowing. It truly does sound like a real guitar.

For a great all-in-one solution, the G is without a doubt... the best musical investment I have ever made. I have and play a huge variety of instruments: guitar, bass, drums(18 piece electronic set with a TD-20 brain), sax, etc... I havent touched any of these instruments since buying the G6. The only, and I truly mean the only, instruments I see using in the future are guitar(power chords for rock songs and strumming for slow) and sax(though this is questionable as I havent bought the ARX-03 expansion as of yet). I may use the drum set as a controller for the keys(rolls, etc...), but truthfully beyond that... I dont see any need for external gear, beyond what I mentioned. The vocal pre-amp works fairly well in this unit and the vocals sound strong and clean with little to no coloration.

Again, you have to make your own choice. I hope what I wrote helps you in this. The G is a truly magnificent instrument and deserves the praise.

Edit: One note of interest. You can get the G6 for $1999 with a free, wheeled hard case and free shipping here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/543050-REG/Roland...

Word of advice though, pick up a 1GB memory stick from here: http://www.oempcworld.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen...

You will need that specific memory, because it is tested by Roland to work with the G.

Take care and good luck getting your new keys!

I want to chirp in for a couple insights.
Motif XS and Roland F-G are on a par, with Motif being more of a finished product and Roland more of a BETA version that has, though, even in its half-finished condition, more scope that the Motif could ever have. In short, if you buy the Motif, you will have everything properly worked out, no such need for OS reviews, but it can only do so much, and won't go from there. Yamaha's not exactly cutting edge in its product range, it's not their company's aim nor are they focused on that. Motif is solid, good-sounding, slightly more oriented toward "playing" natural sounds, but just a tad. You can do 70% of the same on both boards. But obvously, you can see for yourself that the F-G goes 240% where the others go 100%, with the track count, the audio recording, the mouse (much better than Korg's touchscreen), and the mixing screen and faders and such. If only those features were fully implemented....
Roland has an incredible drive to push the barriers: they invented every single novelty in music electronics bar just a few, and each single new product is a world of its own. Yet, most of their items are unfinished, do not learn from previous mistakes or successes, and are constantly in need of support and OS updates. Every version 2 of a line of products usually disposes of a lot of features from the previous model and introduces new ones; sometime that's good, most often it's not. So sometimes ytou think you are upgrading, but you really are changing completely way of working.
You can get lucky, with Roland, and once in a while stumble upon a marvel of a thing that runs around the world 3 times over (insert your favorite Roland gear here), or get annoyed at the vapidity and faults of their stuff. It's a gamble, really.
Wanna go for more solid stuff? Yamaha's the way to go. Wanna take a chance? Roland.
Wanna go a different direction altogether? Try Korg. Soundset is sketchy (I had the much-trumpeted M50 in for a review 2 days ago, kicked it out of my house with shame in 20 minutes), OS have their own logic which is not wrong but has issues, and yet they are very much behind their products, with crossover platforms and ointeraction between technologies. Still, if I had to chart the 3 flagship boards on the market now, i'd be hard pressed.
Motif XS top right, Fantom G top left, but M3 definitely below.

Finally, guys, when you compare flagships, do not compare the Korg Oasys, which is a $ 5000 platform on a totally different level, you need to compare the M3.

Just get the G and call it a day. If you can't make good music from this machine, it's not the machine, it's you.

How's that? :p

I double what you said, kenchan.

Re: Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fant

27 Sep 2009, 11:23
I triple that kenchan :)

You know this kinda stuff pisses me off, cuz people saying that the sequencer on the G sux's,the sounds suck, and blah blah blah, ok...so most of these ppl saying stuff on "other" forums are korg/yami fanboys. so i dont give a F-+k about what they have to say.....I have a G6 i love it, still learning....yes the sequencer should be tweaked/fixed in future firmware updates but that's not stopping me from making music....just use a daw,Thanks to FG connects we have a whole buncha new sounds n stuff. so i think the G is gonna get better IF we get more updates...so im not really worried about it...roland wouldn't ditch us :)

I do understand that some people may have some complaints aobut the FG, of course it has some issues but tell me the synth that hasn´t ?

Myself Im very pleased with my FG6 ! Having a machine that can do everything is absolutely a dream, once upon a time the Fairlight was the best synth you could own, the FG is like a modern Fairlight with lots of extras, well thats at least how I see it.

Re: Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fant

Im going to quadruple that this machine rocks plain and simple if you dont like it dont buy it go get something you like and quit beating on my fantom G.

Re: Some (perhaps unjustified?) accusations against the Fant

30 Sep 2009, 18:12
one of the posters above hit the nail on the head. the fantom has more potential than any of the others combined, but roland hasnt gotten it together yet. its coming along at a slow pace but i like im sure the other "complainers" dont blame their tools, they just want them to do what they are capable of.

i still make great music on my fantom, i dont see how i could make better music on any other board, but sometimes its a cumbersome task to do things that were done easily ten to twenty years ago on antiquated equipment.

i havent seen one person say they cant make good music on the fantom, but i know most of us wish the fantom would live up to half the hype and potential the machine has. i really think roland could care less.

if it wasnt for this site and artemiys hard work and contributions i would have dumped the thing a long time ago. im keeping it though and plan to continue making good music with it, and im also keeping my hopes up that eventually this machine will do what its supposed to!!!!
