X6...not impressed with the sound

I'm suprised this thread is still going....

People, have you heard of TROLLS??? guess what? this guy's one. *light-bulb*

to counter-troll :

MBOt,
techno music is like 1995 man. Get a life. Anyone can play a kick beat 4 times a measure, some high hats, tremendous delay and reverb and guess what? YA GOTS TECHNO!!!

So, obviously the Fantom is not for you, since its a MODERN machine. For techno, you might want something that plays the same beat for like 55 measuers and then adds a hihats for another 40 measures, and a clapper.......say, like the TB!!!
*light bulb agin*

For us modern folks, rap is deh b33z n33z dawg! g3t t3h shnizle beats and spin that shit yo!

awe yeah, zit zit zit zit zit zit duw dum zit zit zit zit zit zit yeah yeah duw dum,"here we go" "here we go" down with dat dog! yeah yeah zit zit -zit zit- zit zit -zit zit duw dum .... fargen eh,some complicated shit going on there in them there beats, glad to see your up with that modern music dawg! Rap is like 1955 Maaan, get a life!
You come up with a techno song that gets the crowd cheering and whistling and i'll respect your efforts, until then you don't know shit. It's like saying rock'n'Roll is just 4/4 with drums, a guitar thrown in and a ponsy one line bass player to keep things rolling.Well essentially all music can be exspossed for it's bad examples or similarity to it's own kind, but it's the genius in any Genre that speaks for itself.
Down with that shit yo! and i can assure you theres a hell of a lot more mainstream clubs and underground clubs playing to the night scene than, the ole closed hi hat- zit zit zit zit zit zit zit posy. Don't forget to overlay two or three claps and then micro edit to delay the timing by milliseconds and throw SPL's transient designer over it to get that big beat phat clap happening. See yaaaa...

MBot, I still think the FantomX should do the job for ya........check out Artemio's tweak book, and PlanetF, available at the fantomized store.

Also, If I were you(which I know I'm not) I'd look into adding a VSynth to your rig........used, you can get one for about a grand(US Dollars), or add a VSynth XT, before I go and trade the Fantom in on a Motif. not slamming the Motif at all, but when I think of Dance Music, the Mo is the last thing that came to mind.

Many a Pro is using the Motif, but I don't know about the dance crowd. BT, Soulstice, Conspiracy Theory, Crystal Meth............most of their sounds are from old old Roland stuff...........JP8000, TB303, etc...........

It does explain alot, that the Fantom was a bargain buy for you, and not your first choice..........but I don't see why you are upset with Roland.....From your point of view, thinking the Motif is worth more, you knew what you were getting into. The Motif has the things you want(except Variphrase), but you didn't want to pay for them........

Here in the states, and I assume the same in the UK and the Ukraine, the Motif, Fantom, and Triton are priced within a couple hundred of each other.........they're basically the same. Most of us chose the Fantom, because we thought it was the best Workstation available. We all stand by that decision.

Ok, so it isn't ideal for your situation, but........that's really your bad, because you were bargain shopping. You should've got what you wanted from the get go. It might have taken a little longer, but in the end you'd be happier. Now, you're going to loose money selling the FantomX..........I wouldn't do that. Skipback Sampling, the large screen, the Sequencer's interface, live mode, you'll loose all that as well as your money. I'd get the Motif Rack, if you've absolutely got to have those presets. You'd get the best of both worlds.

but like you said, Variphrase would really give you an edge in your production. So, once again, if I were you, I'd work towards adding a Vsynth to my rig.

hmmm......thankyou O'wise one. I didn't catch it the first time you posted such.

He's kinda got a point:
1) IF Roland had put Variphrase(like on the MC-909)......it would be over. we wouldn't be hearing about Motifs, and Tritons on our forums.....The FantomX will be king.

2)Roland has done some stupid things in the past..... since 2001 actually. I like the FantomFA-76, but to price it alongside the Triton, and Motif.......
2003 the FantomS-I love mine, but I bought it used. Saved a bundle. The other two has it beat in Poly(when fully expanded), effects(number, type, and flexibility) It's so obvious that Roland is trying to catch up to the competition, and not leading the field.
2004 The FantomX, they upped the poly, improved memory utilization, added more sounds, kicked but on the piano but they're still playing Catch up.....
2005, yeah, they got it right.........well maybe. I'm a guitar/bass player, so audio tracks are way cool for me. But wouldn't you synth/sounddesigner guys much rather have had Variphrase??

I think you would.

Re: X6...not impressed with the sound

7 Nov 2005, 22:08
Forget the MC909,i'm talking ala VP9000 and Vsynth;if the MC909's got the same implementation then good, the Fantom should have copied it,and why shoud it be either 8 audio tracks or variphrase, why wasn't it both.
The reason that most dance heads are not using the MoES(which would also be the case for Fantom) is that they are all on the computers, not because the Mo can't do dance! and no i didn't absolutely have to have the MotifES presets,it's just that it had so much of everything else in addition to having largely very nice presets including lots of synth sounds, but they were'nt the only factor in favour of it's superiority.
If Variphrase and loopcrossfade we're on the fantom, then that would have tipped my decision in it's favour, EVEN IF all the boards we're the same low price, but even then it would still need much faster sample loading times, a better Reverb, more simultaneous effects and a master Eq(then, and only then, could it be called the king) until then,it's just another "Me Too" product and definitely not up with the times." The 21st Century for fucks sake" and they're still messing around with the basics! no excuse for this folly and bad marketing.
The JP8000 is a good sounding virtual analog(albiet a tad cold) but a Access Virus would be my choice, and the TB303 has long since been eaten alive by many a software synth.
"Give it up Roland! and stop being a tight arse!"

Re: X6...not impressed with the sound

7 Nov 2005, 22:52
Now see M Bot, I'm trying to meet you halfway. but you're being less than civilized. I mentioned the JP8000, the TB303, and I'll add the Juno line because I know they are still being used in modern day dance production. No one is using the presets that came with them. No one uses the presets in the Motif, the Fantom, or the Triton. Heck, not even the hip-hop guys are using the presets. Roland, Korg, and Yamaha include the presets for us meat and potatoe guys. You need a piano, here you go. Need a guitar, there. A compressed bass, use this preset. You dance fellows are supposed to be able to take a tool as deep as the Fantom, the Mo, and the Triton, and make your own sounds. If you are having trouble, check out Artemio's Tweak book. Darn near every preset in the big three, is to show you how to get the sound of an 808, 8000, oberheim, moog, Juno, etc, etc.......there is no Motif sound, or a Triton sound. Ten years from now, when the new workstations come out, you'll have presets like "hairy 808", not "hairy Motif"

Earlier I asked if you visited the Motifator, or TritonHaven with your gibberish, because this same garbage will apply just as well over there. It will do you just as much good there as it will here, because no one from Roland is listening there, or here.

I don't think Roland Cares if you decide to go the software route. The Fantoms, FantomX, FanX-up1, should've made that pretty obvious to you.

Now you want variphrase, you've got a bit of it in the Fantom already, that's the technology behing beatsync. You want more Variphrase utility through Software, MC-909 style is about the best you're going to get. You want VP-9000, Vari-OS, or V-synth, it's going to take more than just software. The Latest Greatest V-Synth XT boasts a maximum of 34 voice Polyphony, and has a funky concept of multi-timbrality. Vari-Os, VP-9000, were talking like 5 voices. You try to stick that in the Fantom, at the very least you'll be stealing voices.

You screwed up, you were being cheap, and you bought the wrong board. You can make the best of it , and make some music, or you can sell it at a lost, and go get a Motif. You still won't have Variphrase, of any king, or loop crossfade. But then you'd be on Motifator complaining to them about that.

You could stop bitching, grow up, and add a Vsynth XT to your rig, or a Motif Rack, and be like every other professional out there, understand that you're going to have to have more than one instrument to realize the songs in your head. Hell, even us guitar players understand that.

You could go get a Laptop........

Or you could go get an OASYS...........add an XT rack, or a VP-9000, or a Vari-OS module, 'cause the OASYS doesn't have Variphrase, or anything like it.

You know, why don't you go get a NEKO from Openlabs......it's a computer built into a keyboard......you can put anything you want into it...........anything you want, except Variphrase....well, you can load ACID, or Sonar, and get fucken MC-909 style Variphrase.........or load CubaseXT and get a pseudo variphrase with their Audio "Warp", but their idea of real time, isn't really realtime, you won't get the synthesis capability of the Fantom, or the V-Synth, but if you're just going to be using the presets, that doesn't really matter.

Anywho, it's ovious that I can't help you. Sorry, but I tried.

k, look at his replies. Look at his statements like "who needs skip back sampling?" "who needs pads"

who needs YOU? just becos you dont like it, doesnt mean everyone doesnt need one. I thought the V-link was unncessary, but so did a lot of people. BUt i said "IMO", and didnt bash about it for countless threads.

Thunderkyss,
your words dont seem to have any effect on him. I tried counter-trolling him ( ;-) ). doesnt seem to work.

He actually took my post seriously and thought i was a rap artist or something. go figure....lol...

For the record, i dont think techno is lame. read the statement PREVIOUS to that. (rollseyes) That was meant to "troll" you out.

This guy is completely dissatisfied with his purchase, and i can understand, but 99% of that is HIS fault. I purchased this thing for 1599 when it came out, and i dont regret doing that, cos i read what this thing does BEFORE i purchased it. i didnt blindly close my eyes and decide in my dreams that ima get a fantom s overnight.

If you can tell me you wouldn't like the Fantom to have any extra features then thats up to you, i don't think theres anyone here that would say Variphrase wouldn't be a good addition; we've all got different needs but some things would be great for everyone.
Roland should have known better! My case still stands strong.I didn't want to leave hardware, but Rolands made that choice for me.Toy's that are just rehashing the wheel are no longer acceptable. The MoES is definitely a lot more attractive now that it's been significantly reduced, and i'm sure that Korg will come up with something very shortly.so we'll just have to wait and see.
Oh God! i'm gonna be leaving behind RPS, D Beam, a color screen and skip back sampling, how will i ever come up with a track again!

Re: X6...not impressed with the sound

8 Nov 2005, 06:16
What part of the ES hasn't been rehashed??

You don't like all the toy like features of the FantomX, you don't like the sound, & you don't care about it's synthesis features, to you, it is totally useless. You like everything about the Motif.......why would you have bought the Fantom in the first place. You've had it since July, why haven't you returned it?? Especially in your first 30 days?? You weren't happy with it in July, why have you kept it.

I'm trying to save you some money. What you'll spend on a Motif Rack, will be about what you'll loose selling your Fantom X, why don't you just get the Rack and keep the Fantom?? What would you loose by getting the Rack, and not getting the Yamaha Workstation?? Nothing meaningful IMHO.

Or use that money, to start your Computer rig. That'll give you a very nice system from the get go, that you can add to as time goes by.

Either way, you won't get Variphrase. It sounds like you really want it, so.....add a Vsynth XT to your Fantom.

Ah,we finally get a sincere post from thunderboy.took a while didn't it. And he says to me,what part of the ES hasen't been rehashed and i say don't forget the quality stakes, well it looks like i'll have to rehash the list for him-
-threeband Eq on each channel
-high end NEW reverb
-all new 1900 waveforms
-the masterEq
- ALL NEW effects section
-the ribbon controller
-the ability to plug in new boards
-the new filter algorithms
Anyway I didn't return it because of the original reason. The Mo was still at an unacceptable high price, so i would have been left with nothing.
Why should i spend all those thousands on a Vsynth, i would just be walking right into Rolands greedy little trap,it should've been incorporated into their TOP OF THE LINE- 21'st CENTURY WORKSTATION!!! THEIR TOP OF THE LINE WORKSTATION I SAY AGAIN!!! anyway, judging by the price you guys pay for this shit it's no wonder we come away disgruntled, why do we have to pay twice as much,in perspective it's no wonder we're pissed and want that little bit extra.
I don't use computers remember? so that would mean buying a mixer(more uneeded bulk, which severely hampers mobility) to merge the signal or degrading the quality of the audio by having to resample the output from the Vsynth thus defeating the purpose. and when you think about it,the Fantom has the sample engine and the XV synthesis so the variphrase code would have made it a V synth, but no Roland have to dupe us.
KontaktII has the equivalent of variphrase so it does exsist elsewhere.
I'll move to a computer rig when cakewalk finish the beta testing for project5 on Mac OSX until then i have time to wait and see what the next workstations will bring, i'm in no hurry at this pivitol time in music technology, and I wouldn't touch the windows platform as far as i could boot it.
The amount of issues due to the windows experience not being a standardised platform, is totally unacceptable(if you've seen the threads i've seen then you wouldn't bother trying to contradict me) i want my computer experience to be as close to hassle free hardware as possible, and the Mac is the only one that offers that. I wanna make music, not trouble shoot and optimise all day.
oh golly, sambaman seems to think he's letting me in on a big secret about KVR as if the whole universe doesn't know that site exsists.
