USB driver problems. Anybody with the similar experience???

26 Apr 2005, 14:31
I recently replaced my FS with XR. Now I'm having a problem with the USB driver installation. Actually, it installs fine, it's there but it's not working. Win XP says "driver is enabled but may not function properly". Roland installer says, "problems have been encountered" without providing additional info. This happens only on my desktop DAW. Never had problems with the installation or the functioning of the driver in my laptop. So it's clearly some sort of software/driver conflict. The question is, what do I do (other than clean install of the OS) and where do I start? Anybody with the similar experience??? Maybe it's a known issue with this driver? Thank you for your help.

Have you tried changing the usb-wire from your FX to another usb plug on your computer? If it asks for the drivers, have you inserted the fx usb driver cd every time?

I found that on my computer windows xp asks for new drivers if I change the usb wire to another physical plug or port on the computer. I had same kind of problems until I loaded the driver from the fx cd every time. I think this is a problem with windows itself.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for fast reply. Yes, I have tried all that but it doesn't help. In addition, I have tried USB 1.0 vs. 2.0 cables, direct connection vs. connection through the USB hub, powered vs. unpowered hub. Also, I've tried disconnecting all USB peripherals and making XR my only USB device. It still doesn't work.

I have exactly the same experience. It installs fine, although it always asks for the location of the .INF file - it should be smarter than that. Then after rebooting, Windows XP makes a sound when I switch the X6 to MIDI mode. But that's it, the device doesn't appear as a MIDI device, and I have all your other symptoms.

I have a stable WinXP machine, I support PC's for a living and never encounter this kind of difficulty on my personal machine - well until now. The Korg Triton Extreme USB midi driver worked first time. But this just doesn't work, and it bothers me that the driver is still 1.0, even on the v2 CD and the latest download on the roland.co.jp site.

I've been through some serious updates on windows, all my apps and drivers recently and its still not working. But I gotta say that the storage mode works brilliantly, its very helpful in displaying when its transferring and it disconnects itself when you close it on the PC. Roland 1, Korg 0 on that score.

Hope this helps:

"Windows XP/2000 place a limitation on the number of MIDI and audio devices that can be installed. Even changes from one USB connector to another are counted.
If this limitation is exceeded, you cannot use the device even if it is installed. This is due to the limitations of the OS and is not the problem of the driver"

My cpu also encounted this problem. When i tried another computer that had no other midi devices installed it worked fine. I'm yet to fix the problem but the above was found at:

http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/dld.cfm?iCncd=527&ln=en&SearchBy=RcId&dst=P&iRcId=0000000146&dsp=1

You can download a program from there that will only clean off Roland ect. midi devices. , it my fix the problem?

This was the single most effective advice I've had in a very long time. You da man! I appreciate it. I uninstalled Virtual Piano driver which got into my audio devices group from God knows where (I think from Cakewalk) and it worked like a charm. I didn't even have to use that Roland cleaner. Gotta love Microsoft. Thank you man! I think you should make this a public knowledge and email the moderator to include this info in FAQ. God bless you.

Glad I could help. Like I said Im having the same problem, I posted for help in 'Help Newbies' a couple of months ago with no responses. I found that site only last weekend and I only got around to trying the Fantom on my other computer yesterday. I was surprised no one else knew what was causing the problem, I would think it would be quite common? Oh well...Have Fun!

That's an excellent pointer and should get more coverage, LanProductions! I bet it is a lot to do with my problem.

Still I can't get the Fantom X driver to work.

I've only plugged in 3 usb midi devices into my computer, the Roland, a Korg TE and an MK-449 midi controller. The Korg is staying, so I tried to uninstall the midi controller. Being pnp, its not there until you plug it in. I did plug it in so I could uninstall it, which doesn't make any sense to me :)

But still no go. The driver is in there, and the PC knows when I plug in the X6 in USB MIDI mode. Darn.

I got it to work!

It was due to using up all 10 slots for USB MIDI or Audio devices. The Korg driver uninstall utility shows you what is in each slot and allows you to uninstall them.

You get 10 slots for any midi or audio device, and that means all your audio and midi ports including those on the motherboard even if you don't use them. I had 5 wasted slots which were marked 'Corrupt USB Audio driver' - bad webcam drivers which I could easily uninstall.

Cheers,
B

Thanks for that, im not completely lazy, I did search the Korg site but with no luck.

Like your self I too have corrupted slots, 8 of them!!!
Only 0 & 5 are in use!

This is a very useful program and im surprised windows can't do this simple search.

Thankyou very much. Glad we could help each outher out to fix the problem =)

Good news there, LanProductions! Its great to solve a windows mystery like this one :)

This is a very important issue and should get into a FAQ somewhere. Even if your PC has no problem with its drivers, its interesting to see what is in those slots.
