This will always be the downside of VST's and cloud based software. Being electronic musicians, as well as the cutting edge stuff, we like to use equipment that's 30 + years old ( DX7, D-50, M1, Moogs, Jupiters, Juno's, all the TR drum machines etc etc). Of course there are reliability issues to consider with hardware but usually there will be someone somewhere who can fix these things.
Likewise then, it's reasonable to assume we would want to use our VST's for decades, too.
With VST's, there is always a risk that future computer operating systems might scupper VST compatibility but again, keeping a couple of spare cloned computers 'dumbed down' to older systems (which is what I do with Win 7 and Ableton 9) should at least help to keep me going for 20+ years. However online serial number authentication could still be an issue.
With Cloud on the other hand - if the service providers decide they're no longer going to host something, then assuming we stay away from illegal hacked versions, we're potentially hung out to dry.
I hope we should be safe with Roland but I am going to contact them anyway to understand exactly how this all works.
Update : I'm confused now! It seems "play 2-4 life" (horrible title by the way!) might be an alternative option to the regular "Yours" program. I think it's a time limited promotion. But there is nothing that I can see on their website about 'Yours' anymore.
Who knows ?!?!?
