YOURS loyalty program

Is the YOURS loyalty program on? Where you "Rack up 12 months of subscription time, consecutively or not, then choose any software instrument or studio software package from the ever-expanding Roland Cloud library and use it forever".

I contacted Roland Cloud about 3 months ago to find out how many months I'd accrued; they told me "13 months which will count once the Yours program is launched" .

I hadn't realised that it hadn't already been launched. Not sure how clear that was when I subscribed. I'm not planning on leaving but had I wanted to, I'm not sure I could actually use my 13 months towards permanent ownership yet.

Additionally, I hope online verification isn't required every few weeks once you own something.

On my 15th month with Roland Cloud, and have 2 instruments available. Still haven't made up my mind yet...

The problem I see with this is your selecting two musicians your then paying monthly for anyway? For those that don't cancel there really isn't a loyalty program because they are not benefiting. Also the small print says the two instruments will only work while they are part of the Roland Cloud, they have the right to remove them - so then what?

I've just had an email from them; seems the 'Yours' program may have been rebranded as the 'play 2 - 4 life' program. Essentially earning us two keepers per year instead of one BUT with a maximum ownership of 10 and "as long as those instruments stay part of the cloud"...

Haven't read any small print yet. Not sure I like the idea that they could be withdrawn even after ownership. I had hoped under 'Yours' that the one you wanted to keep became a downloadable VST, permanently available irrespective of cloud-longevity.

Yes, that seems odd. And as there is no downloadable installer package, it definitely doesn’t qualify for ”owning”. More like “selecting two favorite cloud instruments”.

I purchased Camel Audio Alchemy several years ago. When Camel Audio went out of business and removed their entire web site, I still got to keep Alchemy - which I am still using frequently. Had that been Roland, abandoning the Cloud concept, I would immediately lose ”my” synths. That is hardly ”playing for life”, is it?

This will always be the downside of VST's and cloud based software. Being electronic musicians, as well as the cutting edge stuff, we like to use equipment that's 30 + years old ( DX7, D-50, M1, Moogs, Jupiters, Juno's, all the TR drum machines etc etc). Of course there are reliability issues to consider with hardware but usually there will be someone somewhere who can fix these things.

Likewise then, it's reasonable to assume we would want to use our VST's for decades, too.

With VST's, there is always a risk that future computer operating systems might scupper VST compatibility but again, keeping a couple of spare cloned computers 'dumbed down' to older systems (which is what I do with Win 7 and Ableton 9) should at least help to keep me going for 20+ years. However online serial number authentication could still be an issue.

With Cloud on the other hand - if the service providers decide they're no longer going to host something, then assuming we stay away from illegal hacked versions, we're potentially hung out to dry.

I hope we should be safe with Roland but I am going to contact them anyway to understand exactly how this all works.

Update : I'm confused now! It seems "play 2-4 life" (horrible title by the way!) might be an alternative option to the regular "Yours" program. I think it's a time limited promotion. But there is nothing that I can see on their website about 'Yours' anymore.

Who knows ?!?!?

The information about YOURS is removed from the faq. Instead this two new have been created:

I have an annual subscription--how can I take advantage of the Play 2-4 Life Holiday Promotion?
Just cancel your annual subscription and sign up for the Play 2-4 Life Holiday Promotion. You'll get 12 months of total access to the Roland Cloud catalog, and permanent access to two Roland Cloud products of your choice, plus credit for all your paid months to date.

^ I saw that too. I don't like having to cancel and then re subscribe.

Then again, are they saying they'll give us credit in full for all our paid months?! I have paid monthly for the last 16 months. Maybe they have pulled 'Yours ' completely and replaced it with this new scheme. Hence the credit - to stop people complaining about the changes to what was originally advertised under 'Yours'.

Only one way to find out. I'll have to email them.

With 16 months you're immediately eligible for two instruments (sign in to the Roland Cloud website and go to My Account to claim those). You could then cancel your monthly membership and get the promotion annual subscription with 16 months (12 months + 4 months credit from your left over loyalty points) and another 2 instruments for $199 USD (currency exchange and VAT applies).

If you're interested, contact Roland Cloud via the website to start the process.

That sounds great! Just a few questions:

If someone is on their 10th month and don't do any membership changes, they will only receive one instrument in february?

Is this the only way to own an instrument, or will some of the YOURS program exist also?
(that you only own it as long as it exists in the cloud, and therefore always needing to authenticate it now and then.)

The main thing I want to be sure of before before cancelling my current subscription (where I benefit from the Yours scheme and do indeed have two instruments I can now claim) is that ownership under P24L (ha, see what I did there !) is not any less robust than owning something under Yours.

I'm a bit concerned about ownership only lasting for as long as the instruments remain in the cloud - as stated in the P24L conditions.

Whilst not stated anywhere, I guess this same caveat applies to Yours too. But I need to be sure.....

If they're in their 10th month, they'll get two instruments when they hit 12 months.

You don't "own" the instrument, you have permanent access to it for as long as it's part of the Roland Cloud catalog. If it gets dropped at some point, you can choose a replacement. All of the other instrument behavior is unchanged--the authorization, using Roland Cloud Manager to install/update/remove--you just don't need to send Roland Cloud any money each month or year to use the reward instruments.

There's no difference, and it's not ownership--it's permanent access for as long as it's in the Roland Cloud catalog. If, for some reason, the instrument ever got dropped from the catalog, then you'd get to pick a replacement. The access rights to the instruments are identical if you just stay on your current paid subscription or if you switch to the promotional annual subscription.
