It's Probably a Daft Question But.....

If you could just see the beauty, these things I can never describe......

Roland is an anagram of Lardon - meaning - a bit of fat pork or bacon used in larding. Lard was Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi's dogs favorite food and hence the name..........

Actually, i've got no idea either so could someone offer a sensible answer?

Found out on their website that they named it because Roland, the name of a European hero in the Middle Ages, can be pronounced the same by anybody of any language due to its nice 2-syllable sound...

Sounds like they aimed for the same thing as Art :-)
UNIVERSAL -> GLOBALISM -> WORLD DOMINATION!!

Strangely enough though, the Japanese pronounciation is "Lorand". So much for world domination, I guess...

I thought Roland was also was an anagram of Arnold or Ronald, or was it not something to do with the original japanses district where Ro-land first formed.

^^
haha

here's something interesting I've found "Roland's name
It may seem strange for a Japanese company to have a Western name, but Roland was founded with export in mind. Ikutaro Kakehashi heard that the name of his previous company, Ace Electronic Industries Inc., was often mangled in pronunciation, sometimes unpleasantly; so he looked for a good-sounding name which would be pronounced roughly the same in all of his major export markets. He found the name Roland in a telephone directory.

Ironically, the name is difficult to pronounce correctly in Kakehashi's native Japanese, which does not distinguish the 'L' and 'R' sounds as in English.

Roland was not, as is often claimed, named after the French epic poem La Chanson de Roland"

sounds like it's a 'global domination' thing...the name sounds good...it has a catch tone to it...many people around the world can pronounce it easily...

Kakehashi's - "I Believe In Music"

7 Dec 2006, 18:39
Just been reading Kakehashi's autobiography, "I Believe In Music".
Really interesting read if anyone is interested. Not just about Roland but a book about business & life also.

P64. Reads "The first step was to select a name for the new company that could be recognised and pronounced throughout the world. I decided that it should have two syllables and that it should include voiced (rather than heard) consonants, in order to be most pleasing to the ear. The letter R was chosen because it was not used by many music companies; therefore it would stand out clearly in the industry listings of trade show indexes. It was only later that I learned of THE SONG OF ROLAND and the image of strength and courage it conveyed".

Well there you have it. Straight from the founder's mouth!

Cheers,
