rd700sx

I recently bought the RD700sx digital piano. One feature I thought I was getting (on the RD700) was the external volume contral of the drums (lever 4). But it is now internal!! Does anyone know how I can get the drum volume to be external - either redirecting one of the levers or using a midi controller? Pretty desperate as this feature is essential for me on stage. J

Hi judymac
Welcome to the Clan

Could you please be a little more specific.
You want :
1 - to control the RD-700SX internal drums volume by an external device or
2 - another device drums volume from the RD?

And what do you call "lever 4" ? Is it the one of the 4 faders (2 - LOWER- 1 / 2 - UPPER - 1) ? .

To cut it short . If you want an external controller to control RD drums Volume you just have to set the controller to send on channel 10 and send midi volume messages on that channel.

I'm not sure you can control it with one of the faders. Will have to check it.

rd700sx drum volume

hey - thanks for reply!
My first choice would be to control with RD drums volume with one of the faders - with the RD700 the 4th was assigned to do this ... but they seem to have taken this out with the sx?
2nd choice - plug in some type of external device that can control the drum volume ... I have never used such a thing and know very little. I am talking only about when playing live not with recording. So does anyone know how to help me? Again - new to this external devices so talk plainly

Hi again judymac

Ok I understand now
As far as I was able to find the 4 faders are stucked with UP1/2 and LW1/2 internal control (besides the 4 ch external control like you already know). Yes Roland droped the rhythm control for an extra keyboard part (the LW2). So the quickest way to go to Rhythm Volume is by pressing SHIFT + RHYTHM/SONG Button and go to the Volume parameter.

The other way around is using an external controller. If you get a "keyboard controler" like THIS ONE you actually can get some extra flexibility cause you can use one knob to control the Rhythm Volume and use the keyboard to play another sound from the RD-700SX.

Let me try it "plainly" ;-)

The RD-700SX is a multi-timbral keyboard that can play 4 parts (sounds) through the keyboard but can play 16 sounds through MIDI (when you use a MIDI sequencer, PC software or any other kind of "MIDI Controlers"). Each of this parts /sounds is controled in its own MIDI channel (from 1 to 16) beeing channel 10 always reserved for the Drums/rhythm part. So if you connect one of these "controlers" you have access to each one of the parts. You do this by conecting the MIDI OUT of the controler (generaly called the "master") to the MIDI IN of the RD-700SX (generaly called the "slave") using a MIDI CABLE. Now on the controller you set it to transmit on channel 10 what gives you acess to part 10 - the Rhythm Part. You can play the controller keyboard and hear the sound coming out from your RD-700SX. After that you can set a controller knob to control MIDI Volume on channel 10 (wich is CC07 - MIDI Control Change = Volume) . But more than that, you can set the controller keyboard to play on channel 5 to play for eg, a strings sound and you'll have 4 sounds on RD-700SX keyboard, a 5th sound (the strings ) on the controller keyboard and still keep the volume control on the knob - ALL sounds coming out of the RD alone.

Obviously there are a lot of variations on this (more than I can mention here) but this is, basically, how you can do it.

Hope I made it clear. Feel free to come back if you need.

rd700sx-midi

Hi - thanks SO much. that was great and clear.
Two questions:
1. Is there a midi controller that is smaller, without the keyboard keys, just like a box?
2. I run Cubase SX on my laptop ... will running it through this do the same thing? Just no easy to control knob though?
You've been great - thanks

Roland RD700sx volume solution!

Hi all and to whoever was helping me ...
I got this great advice from another forum (I was asking everyone!) and here is the answer re a fader control of the drums! It so works!

this guy wrote to me and said ....
If you don't need all of the INTERNAL ZONES you can assign, for example LOWER 2, to control RHYTHM volume. You will want to be in a SETUP. Select SHIFT + ZONE INFO. Cursor to the bottom tone (LOWER 2) and then cursor to the left until you get to the P.A setting. This is PART ASSIGN and it's normally assigned to PART 4. You'll want to change this to 10. The LOWER 2 slider should now control the volume of the RHYTHM. Save the SETUP. Make a similar change to all SETUPs you will be using.

Alternatively, SHIFT + RHYTHM/SONG gets you to the RHYTHM page and you can change the volume there. Remember pressing INC and then DEC scrolls through the values faster. The reverse is also true.

Hi, I din wanna open a new RD700sx question thread, so let me post here :P

ok, so, i absorbed that i cannot have/play more than 4 sounds at once, and that is THE MAJOR DRAWBACK of this keyboard....but, since im stuck with it now...
what do you suggest, what is the best way to go in making more than 4 sounds and splits possible?

I hope youll understand my issue :)

ie: i wanna make an orchestration that has:
Piano, strings, some brases, woodwinds, timpani, bells and a choir....
how can i make it happen?

i mean, in a way of buying another workstation, or module? pls help

thnx in advance
G.
