You don't find CF cards or memory modules too often in the keyboard shops. Just go to the nearest computer shop. Nowadays such a card doesn't cost so much. For using a memory card in the Fantom you need also an adapter since Fantom has PCMCIA slot (too big for a CF card).
Keep in mind, if you want to work with samples in your Fantom, it doesn't suffice to get only a larger CF card, you should expand your sample memory by a SD-RAM module.
The parameters of the memory module you can find here:
http://www.fantomized.info/docs/faq/Fantomized-FAQ.html#entry1.1
and go to the question 1.1

4tet,

Welcome to the Roland Clan.

I think that there may be a bit of confusion about the memory you are inquiring about and FunTomX's answer.

My understanding is that you want to expand your Sampling memory. You will need a 512meg sdram memory module. You said memory card, which may have led to FunTomX's response concerning the Compact Flash card. They are two different things.

The 512meg memory module expands Sampling memory which will increase the sampling time available to you. Your samples reside there after they are created and need to be saved(written) to either User memory or a CF card before you power down, or they are lost. Just like a PC, where anything residing in RAM is lost if you don't save it before you power the PC off.
The Compact Flash card is used as storage, along with User memory.. Consider it as a 'hard drive equivalent'. You can store samples there after they are created and are still in Sampling Memory (the 512meg memory module or the 32 meg Sampling memory that comes standard on the X). You can also store Songs, Patches, Performances, etc. on the Compact Flash. The Compact Flash card and User memory are used for these purposes.

You will need a PCMCIA Type 2 adapter to put the Card in to have it fit in the Fantom. The Fantom slot is a PCMCIA Type 2 form factor. One of the best places to find Compact Flash cards is at a camera store. As FunTomX pointed out, check the FAQs for links to places that may have the 512meg memory modules.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are furhter questions.

Thanks Funtomx and Bassman for your prompt replies.Bassman is right; it is the sampling memory I want to expand. In the manual it shows the chip fits in just below the 4 sound card slots.
Digital Village in London have since been in touch and they seem to have what I am after. Peace and Love to everyone.

4tet,

I'm glad you're set.

You may want to look into getting the Compact flash card, also. Most folks find that it is indispensable. If you expand your Sampling memory, you are going to need a place to store the Samples. For instance, if you sample a long event and it is 33meg in size, you cannot save it to User memory, which is only 32meg. The same would go for a number of shorter samples that could easily total more than what is available in User memory. You'll need the Card to store those Samples. 32meg User memory space for storage can fill up fast!

just another question on the topic.

Hi bassman.

My computer shop wants to know if the SDRAM must be single sided or double sided?

And are you saying that it is better to buy the PC card than RAM. And maybe buy RAM at a later stage.

Thanks man.

Hello blanc,

Single or double sided will not matter. That is just a matter of packing and won't make a difference to the Fantom. Just make sure that it is indeed SDRAM, 168 pin, and 3.3v.

It is best to buy both the RAM and PC Card. They 'work together' in the sense that the RAM will let you hold larger or more Samples in Sampling memory (which is the RAM), and the Card gives you a place to store the Samples (along with User memory) so that they aren't lost upon powering down. My strong recommendation is to get them both.

Glad you like the site.

From a website called E-Cost.com

I ordered a PC133 168pin 512 MB Dimm "Viking" name brand

For... $67.00 plus about $8.50 for shipping....

They have pretty good prices I think...

and the DIMM was cheaper than ANYTHING I could find in the stores(even with the shipping included)

www.buy.com is my defacto purchase site when I'm too lazy to price compare.

Kingston Memory 512MB PC133 168-pin DIMM CL3 133MHZ - KVR133X64C3/512, 65.99, free shipping.

That's what I bought. Going rate for 512MB seems to be in the 6$60-70 range.
