NEW Fantom-X Piano Patch

NEW Fantom-X Piano Patch

30 Dec 2005, 01:05
Hello all.

I've been using a modified version of my UltimatGrnd+ piano patch for a few weeks now and thought I'd share it. This is a darker version of the UltimatGrnd+ patch which I call "DrkUltmtGrnd." You can download the patch in MIDI file format (simply play it on your Fantom-X and it will be loaded into temporary Patch memory for you to audition) at the URL

http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/patches/free/DrkUltmtGrnd.mid

You can hear a short demo in MP3 format at the URL

http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/patches/free/DrkUltmtGrnd.mp3

The darker sound is accomplished by shifting all the samples down 4 keys (while maintaining the same pitch of course) and slightly lowering the LPF cutoff frequency for each Tone.

Hi Nathan, Happy New Year to you! I hope you and your family had a wonderful and blessed Christmas Season. Thank you once again for your generosity and expertise with patch generation/modification. I've downloaded the midi and will find some time over the weekend to play with it.

Wishing you a healthy and happy 2006.

Nice demo Nathan, I actually like 'your' piano more than the standard Grand, well done.

Hi Dan and Jost.

Dan: Thanks, yes my Christmas was good. Spent it with family. Had some good food. I'm spending New Years with family as well.

Jost: I'm glad you like the piano patch. Right now that "DrkUltmtGrnd" patch is my favorite piano patch. It's warmer and darker than the stock UltimatGrand patch as well as my slightly modified UltimatGrnd+ version. By causing the Fantom-X to take the samples from 4 semi-tones higher than the key you press then pitch-shift those samples down 4 semi-tones to the note you're actually pressing, the sound takes on a very different characteristic. The stereo image is somewhat blurred and the upper harmonics of the samples are moved to lower frequencies giving the piano a different texture it would seem.

Anyway, hope you guys are having a good holiday season as well.

Sounds great. I often use Darker Side from SRX-11 and your's is a nice addition for my arsenal.
Thanks

Bravo, Nathan!

Heard this and immediately added it to my Patch collection. Great idea and a good variation on the original. Quite useful.

Happy holidays to you and yours.

Patch on XA

This patch sounds great on my Xa until I hit the keyboard for more volume and then I just get a deep tone that sounds awful.

Is this cos its an Xa?

Anyone else had any trouble with this?

I have Xa with SRX07

Hi all.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Naji: I didn't really do anything special I don't think. Another user here on the forum asked how they could effectively move internal waveform sample assignments up or down the keyboard while maintaining the same pitch (apparently this is a feature of some Korg synths). I explained that you could shift the sample down (i.e. effectively take the sample from E4 and play it on C4) by setting the Tone's Pitch up by the number of half-steps you want to shift the samples (+4 in this case) then using the Pitch Envelope to bend the pitch of the Tone down by the same amount. To be more clear, use the Pitch parameter to select the key you want to reassign to C4. So in this example, we want the sample on E4 to be played on C4 so we select the key 4 half-steps above C4 (which is E4, or +4 in the Pitch parameter for the Tone). Once the new key is selected, we bend the pitch back down to the original key we started from (C4) using the Pitch Envelope.

This got me thinking as to how this would make a piano sound. I found that shifting the samples down 4 half-steps made it sound much warmer and darker. You can look at how I applied the above method in the parameters of the DrkUltmtGrnd patch yourself.

rogerp1: Actually, because the Xa does not have the second internal bank "B" of waveforms like the other Fantom-X models, which this patch requires, this patch won't work on the Fantom-Xa. Sorry about that.

robbie50: Haha. I take it you figured it out. :-)

Thanks for the tweaked patches! I have a srx 11 and find most of the pianos have a "nasal sound" or as my wife discribes it "twangy" if you ever get a srx 11 and decide to do some tweaking make sure you post some :)

Thanks for the how to but it is a little over my head, but I will play around

If I want to put this in the XR?

18 Jan 2006, 11:12
Can I just play the .mid on my xp-80 sequencer which will send all the right messages to my XR? Or will it screw something up in my XP-80 because it is trying to creat a patch that wouldn't exist in the XP?
thanks

Yes, you can play the .mid file in your XP-80 sequencer to send the data to your Fantom-XR. No, it won't screw up your XP-80 because the System Exclusive data in the MIDI file is just that, system exclusive (to the Fantom-X) so your XP-80 will ignore the sysex data, though it may attempt to play the demo notes at the end, but if you load the .mid file into the sequencer first and set track 1 to external only, the data will only be seen by the XR anyway.
