Hey Art, you were asking a question about sampling a piece of music a while back and not sure if you wanted more insight into how its viewed and so forth but this is a pretty informative clip that i think you and others might like if you haven't already seen it that is. Enjoy!

Thanks a lot, I hope to find some time to check this out. Though, this doesn't bother me anymore, because I am composing my music with 100% of sounds I made myself. I don't even use sample libraries almost at all.

Hi Art,

You say "100% of sounds I made myself."

You mean 100% sounds you tweak out of the ROM waves or 100% samples you produce yourself and that are taken from anyother source?

...just could not afford the 8!

I mean, I only use the sounds I created myself. I use only two sources as raw material: ROM waves (mostly basic ones) and live mic samples, more rarely some radio buzz samples and such.

I was wondering about the samples just because I was curious, not because I base my music on someones work. If I ever thought of anything like that, I meant sampling a drum loop from 1960s Jimi Hendrix recording or such. I know I should better go for a copyright-clean 1960s vynil sample library, but I was just curious as I said.

If u don't intend to sell it, then it really doesn't matter....no one is gonna care til u've made a million dollars off it.(and no one here has that problem anyway..) they aint gonna come after u if u aint got nothing but a sample in your possesion. they want the LOOT u make off it! so go ahead and sample away from any source.. until it's time for u to get signed. then it'll get taken care of..If u can remember the source by then....

With all this copyright stuff in mind, does Roland "own" the sounds that it has on the Fantom keyboards? If a keyboard player of a successful band uses a Roland Fantom X on recordings that sell millions of copies, does Roland get a piece of the action, because the sounds used by the keyboardist were "created" by Roland?

No, all the synth manufacturers I know, including Roland, give you all right to use the waveforms, patches, arp patterns and anything else in any form and make money out of it.
