Fantom X vs. Korg Karma and Triton Extreme

16 Mar 2005, 15:52
Hello Fantom gang,

This question is for someone else looking at getting a Fantom X6; he's also looking at the the Korg Karma, and the Korg Triton Extreme 61 (I already have the X8 but am unfamiliar with the Korgs).

If anyone is familar with the Korg machines, how would you compare then with the X?

Thanks a bunch!

if hes lookin into korgs, tell him to get an oasys haha

Karma is a very cool keybaord and can implement a FAntom X very very well. Triton and Fantom are the compeition there, but I dis like Triton Extreme alot so dont ask me haha.

"... Karma is a very cool keybaord and can implement a FAntom X very very well. ..."

What does that mean in English? How exactly would a Karma "implement" a Fantom X?

Right now you can get the Korg Triton Extreme 61 key for around $1800.00 and as a bonus you will receive the Korg Legacy Collection free, which is a $600.00 dollar value. I believe that if I were in the market for a workstation right not that this is what I would get. This deal is very, very good. My guess is that this is Korgs way of getting rid of the Triton Extreme because it appears not to have sold well at all so this offer may not be around for long. Any Triton can use the software version of Karma, which is also very cool. I am also guessing that the Triton Extreme can take the MOSS expansion board and will now stop from typing anymore as I don?t want to get myself too excited.

Well other users have Karmas and said that the GE's in karmas are well implemented with the Fantom X's sounds. putting them together in a song onto the Fantom X sequencer would be pretty cool.

Karma is a really cool board. If your friend wants a Keyboard Workstation, with out sampling, then that's the one he should get. The Sounds are all standard Triton Sounds, so there is some "quality" there.
I personally didn't want a sampler in my workstation, but I didn't like the feel of the Karma's KeyBoard.
When I was looking at Keyboards, my first priority was sound. It had to sound good, and although it is different from the Fantom, I'd still say the Karma passed on that issue. Then it had to have midi in-out-thru again, passed. It had to have a sequencer with at least eight tracks, and the ability to record in loop mode by mixing the new data with the old. Karma passed again.
It had to have a good keyboard feel. I'd been using an EPS16+, and I kinda got spoiled to the feel of that action. I still feel the EPS16+ has the best synth action ever created, the XP-50 had the next best IMHO. The Fantom was the best out of the boards I've tried since 2002. At the stores, I thought it was very similar to my EPS, but when I got it home, it's not as similar as I thought, but I'm getting used to it now. The Karma, the TritonLE, and the Motif felt very similar to my daughters PSR.

If your friend is into sound design, then the Fantom has more options to tweak a sound, more LFO's, more tonal structures, more filter types, more layers per tone, the ability to use different tones in the left and right channel, the ability to use stereo tones.
If he is into Arpegio's, then the Karma function is flat out awesome. and is a very strong feature.
If he wants a crapload of sounds, then the Triton Extreme, FantomX are solid choices. If you are really good friends, I'd suggest he get the Triton Extreme, or the Karma, that way you can trade from time to time. Hell, maybe he'll realize he should 've got the Fantom X, and sell you the Korg on the cheap.

Because of this thread, I decided to go check out eBay, and see what used Karma's are going for(I'll never buy new). Anyway, I found Image

He says it doesn't get much use. Look at the keyboard in the background.

Just thought it was funny, that's all. I'm sure there are a lot of folks who prefer the Karma to many other Synths, hell they have there own forum too.

If I have both FantomX and Karma, can I use Karma to send it GEs as midi signals to control FX sounds and be recorded in FX sequencer (as MIDI commands, not sample)?

Fantom X6 Vs Korg

18 Mar 2005, 13:22
I am the person who is interested in purchasing one of these keyboards. I am in the process of getting opinions about them. I am a drummer and not a keyboardist. I've got enough understanding in theory to figure my way around in song writing and etc. I am looking for one of these things to use in recording music that I've written (with a VS2480).

It looks to me that all three of them are pretty darn cool. However, I've most recently been leaning toward the Triton Extreme because it has most of the effects cards as the Karma. The Karma doesn't come with a lot of these cards so in order to get the full potential of the Karma, one has to make additional purchases (which may end up costing as much, if not more, than the Extreme.

I am looking for something with tons of sounds. I thought I was ruling out the Fantom because I didn't realize that it can generate a butt load of sounds. I thought it was basically a nice keyboard instead of being a synth.

I am not sure what arpegio is. I think that has to do with a bunch of different notes in sequence.

I would love to find something that could make authentic complicated guitar strumming with a combination of accents, palm mutes, and regular strumming (for funky sounds). However, that isn't totally necessary.

The bottom line is: I would like to get input about what an Extreme can do that a Karma can't. What a Karma can do that an Extreme can't. What a Fantom can do that these others can't and etc.

That would be soooooooooo helpful.

Thanks in advance.

JE

The difficulty in providing those kinds of comparisons is that you appear to have no basis of comparison.

You don't know what an arpeggio is, for instance. The Fantom X, Karma and Triton Extreme handle arpeggios in very different fashions from each other. But if you don't even know what an apeggio is in the first place, how does any discussion of this make any sense or help you in any way?

The same principle applies to all sorts of other concepts. They are all great workstations with different features. If you want to make any comparison beyond that simple statement, well ... you have to know something about the topic to begin with.

One of the things that originally got me looking at the Karma, is that you can think up a chord progression, play it into the Karma's sequencer, and let it loop, play over and over again. Then you can turn on the Karma GE effects, and the Karma will add parts to the simple Chord progression you put in, to make it sound more real. Like you've got an assistant songwriter with you at all times. Then there are four knobs, that will change different parameters of the GE's, so you can change how the part sounds. It won't replace a real live person you can talk to, and explain how you want the part to sound, but it's pretty close. The Extreme can do the same thing, but you'd have to hook it up to a computer, and run the Karma Software from there.

I decided on the Fantom, because for me it's a glorified drum machine. It's a lot easier to replace a drummer(just joking), I have a drummer, and a keyboard player, I use the Fantom to say this is what I had in mind, so I don't need the extra umph, the Karma provides in fleshing out parts. so sound and feel where higher on my list.

Fantom Vs Korg

18 Mar 2005, 15:31
Thanks Thunderkyss, that's the type of feedback for which I am looking, even though I don't know what an arpeggio is. Yes, I have to agree that it is easy to replace a drummer. If drummers could keep time (without speeding up), then they wouldn't be so easy to replace. :) :)

I can speed up with the best of 'em. Or, for another twist to show my diversity, I can slow things down too. :) :)

Anyway, if anyone else could share what they like or dislike about these products, that would be appreciated.

Tanx,

JE
