Anyone moved from an FA-06 to Fantom 06 (or I'll take opinions on the Fantom 06 as well)

I asked a couple of months ago but the Fantom 0 series had just been released so I'm hoping that maybe a few more people may have converted or picked up 06s.

I LOVE my FA-06 with two major exceptions:

1. The "shaved keys" - the keys are all a bit smaller than standard in all dimensions - shorter, narrower, and things like the slopes on the black keys are a bit odd. Anyone who has one probably knows this. They're the same on my A-800. This is not a MAJOR problem for me, but it's something that if I could get back to a more full-size synth key, I'd prefer.

2. This is the really huge problem: the black keys too easily send out velocity message of 127 no matter what you have the velocity setting set to. Again those of you who have one will know this. But for those of you who don't, it's just far too easy to hit a black key and have it send max velocity. And the white keys are only marginally better. But you do something like play a Bb chord, and the Bb will be louder than the D and F. It's fine for sounds that are less or not velocity sensitive, but for things like Piano - it just doesn't work (maybe only if you're very light handed). I'm not expecting Graded Piano Hammer Action or anything like that, but in no way shape or form should any keyboard EVER send different velocities from the white and black keys given the same touch.

One thing I was considering was moving to the FA-07 when they finally came out. I hated to spend extra money on just more keys though - but if the keys were at least without this black/white problem, that would make the FA the "perfect keyboard" for me (even if the keys were still a bit shaved). An FA-08 would really be great, but the size, weight, and so on were drawbacks and dealbreakers for me (can't even fit it in my car, need a nice case, stronger stand, bigger stage footprint, etc.)

Now that the Fantom 0 series is out, I would consider moving "up" to a Fantom 06 IF it doesn't have this velocity issue and if the key dimensions are the same or larger, even better.

I'd love to know:

1. What am I gaining and losing if I move to the Fantom 06?

2. Do the keys have either of the issues above on the 06?

I can tell you right now, the biggest way I use the FA-06 is as a live performance keyboard for bread and butter keyboard and synth sounds - Piano, EP, Clav, Organ, Synths, Brass, Winds, Strings, Choir, sound effects, etc. I'm playing mostly classic rock and contemporary pop cover music, and not doing a lot of EDM or electronic music things - so just to give you an idea, the EXP 2 and 10 - keyboards and orchestral were far more useful to me than EXP 1, which was the more modern dance-oriented stuff.

I also use the Pads to select sounds within a Studio Set. I set up 16 sounds in 1 studio set, and then use the pads to switch between them, or, if a song has a number of complex keyboard parts, I'll set them all up in one SS and use the pads to select between them in various combinations. So one "bread and butter" SS with all the basic types of keys, and then song-specific SS for more complex songs with more "one off" sounds.

I don't really use the Sequencer. It's nice to have, and I'm sure as soon as I give it up I'll need it, but, I can live without it.

I don't really launch loops on the pads (few exceptions, see below).

I didn't care about not having a mappable sampler.

But I will say, being able to record an audio file, like the intro to Pink Floyd's "Time" and just trigger that to start it, or, I've also taken each sound from the intro to "Money" (the 7 cash register type sounds) and play them by running through 7 pads!

So if I could still do stuff like that, great. But since it's not the primary way I use the pads, I can live without it (I just played back audio clips on my phone running into an input before I got the FA!)

I really don't even do that much creating and editing of sounds.

There are two other things I don't like about the FA series:

1. You can't turn the MFX on each part on or off. I HATE that I can't just turn off the Tremolo or Delay on a sound without editing the sound and saving it as a new patch. And I HATE that you can't just press a button to turn the MFX on and off on a patch.

2. I HATE (the hate is strong with this one) that there was no software editor. I probably would do a lot more sound creation if I could do it on the computer.

But both of those are not deal-breakers - I just do other things to get around them.

I hate to sell the FA and lose the money in getting a Fantom 06, and it REALLY pisses me off that they came out at the same basic price level.

But I'll take the hit if it adds some more pros (more sounds? able to load more sounds - without subscription? better keys/no velocity issues, mappable sampler) and won't mind losing the Sequencer...but what else am I giving up?

I own a Fantom 8 and cannot be of much help to you, based on your request.

But I cannot help thinking about those issues you have mention dealing with velocity and volume.

Might indeed be an issue, but would you please confirmed you have checked that velocity.control.is indeed ON under the KEYBOARD tab of the ZEN-Core tones being used ?

As for the loudness differences, have you checked TIME KEYFOLLOW and PAN KEYFOLLOW settings...?

About the hardware: I don't have an FA-06 or Fantom-06. I had an FA-07, which I bought online after reading positives reviews, including the action. However, I couldn't stand the action, and I could not get used to it, because IMO it was too stiff, which made it difficult for me to play the keys accurately close to the hinge (in particular the black keys). Since I liked the sounds and functionality, I replaced it with a Fantom-7.

Based on that, I would recommend to play the keyboard first before purchasing it, if the action is important to you. If there are no shops where you can try it, maybe you can find someone else who owns one.

One other thing about the hardware: The quality of the 16 pads is equally bad on the FA-07 and Fantom-7 (and presumably also Fantom-0).

I will add a few non-hardware thoughts in a separate reply.

My issue with the pads is that you have to hit them in a certain way for the keyboard to register the hit.

It works okay for many use cases, like switching keyboard groups, or "triggering" samples for intros.

However, I would not use them for "playing". A specific example: I would not use the sample pads to play the talkbox samples for Living on a prayer, and I would instead use the keyboard, either to trigger the sample pads (as in https://youtu.be/x3LKHLDXmdk), or to trigger keyboard samples.

Thank you...😃😃😃😃

I have so far use the pads to switch Keyboard Groups, trigger my own sampled sounds and lately to play notes while also using the astounding HOLD button, and all went great indeed.

About non-hardware differences between FA-06 and Fantom-06:

Features that you might miss when switching from the FA-06 to the Fantom-06:
  • Linear sequencer and ability to export songs as WAV.
  • Multiple pad sample sets: On the FA-06, the 64 pad samples are stored per song, and you can quickly switch between sets of samples by loading a different song. The Fantom-06 has only one set of 64 pad samples.
  • Favorites: On the FA-06, you can use the buttons below the screen for quickly switching between your favorite tones and studio-sets. There are some alternatives on the Fantom-06 (e.g. ratings for scenes and tones, and scene chains).
  • Some SuperNatural-Acoustic tones.
  • D-Beam.
Features that I would miss when switching from the Fantom-06 to the FA-06:
  • Touch screen and the UI controls (knobs below the screen).
  • Keyboard samples.
  • Sliders and pitch/modulation wheels.
  • Two additional insert FX (IFX).
  • Lack of features in the SuperNatural Synth engine.
Overall, I would say the FA-06 and Fantom-06 have a lot in common, and they are not worlds apart. If there are things that you dislike on the FA-06, then it is likely that they have not improved on the Fantom-06.

For example, you mentioned MFX. This is still the same on the Fantom-06. The MFX is part of the tone, and if you want to permanently change it, then you have to save it as a new tone. There is also only a single MFX per tone/zone, in contrast to Yamaha Modx with 2 effect slots per part, and Korg Nautilus with 12(?) that can be flexibly assigned.

AIUI, there is a software editor as part of Roland Cloud Zenology, however, it is not free, I have never used it, and I don't know if it is useful. I think the touch screen on the Fantom-06 is a huge improvement over the UI on the FA-06.

FA-06/DS61/VR09 keys--at least the white ones--are the same as any other "full-size" keys. So (unlike Yamaha's semi-weighted boards), you can stack them with any other such board(except the aforementioned Yamahas), and the keys will all line up. As far as being shorter from front to back, there is no standard for that... those Rolands are a bit shorter than average, but not the shortest. (I think the Nord semi-weighteds are shorter, IIRC, along with the many others that use a Fatar TP-8O action.) I believe the Juno DS76 and FA-07, while my Fantom-07 keys are a bit longer than the FA-06/DS61/VR09 but shorter than the FA-07.

Differences in sounds are discussed in some detail at http://forums.rolandclan.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=65750

Functionally, probably the biggest thing you lose is the full workstation-style sequencer. Quite a lot is added, though, including a much more fully realized version of seamless sound switching, the touchscreen, the far greater number of real-time knobs and sliders, Logic/Mainstage integration, the ability to load more than two SRX-based expansions (along with other kinds of expansions), the ability to load in your own keyboard-playable samples.

Favourites
Without a Librarian, this is a killer for me. The Favourites feature is great when preparing the gigs to create powerful yet flexible setlists.

I hate the same on the FA06, moved to FA07... and made a huge mistake on selling it. Value for money was great to gig with.

You can also simply create a page (or multiple Pages) of Scenes to function as Favorites.

Zenology can be used to edit tones. You cannot use it to edit scenes.

Thanks. So, are the keys on Fantom-06 and -07 less stiff, than those on FA-07?
Playable and nuanced is more important than semi-weighted (here).

That's a question to anyone who has an answer...

Stiffness or resistance overall is different from getting stiffer as you move toward the rear of the keys. The FA-06 had less resistance than FA-07, but it still had the issue of getting stiffer as you moved further back. (And I think it seems even worse, because the keys are shorter to begin with.)

Playable and nuanced is more important than semi-weighted (here).
FA-07 (semi-weighted) has more resistance overall than FA-06 or Fantom-07 (which are unweighted). The added resistance of a semi-weighted action tends to make it easier to control dynamics than on an unweighted action. All these actions (FA-06, FA-07, Fantom-06/07) do get noticeably stiffer as you move toward the rear of the keys, regardless of other differences among them.

As I understand, the longer the lever the easyer (and smoother) the keys to play.
And the lever might go well under the "hood". Which, apparently, it doesn't. Otherwise there wouldn't be that aforementioned stiffness. I think.
The weighted keys are not stiff at all (at least the decent ones). They are quite responsive. And the semi-weghted ones kinda look up to them :-)

Toward the rear of the keys, yes. Toward the front of the keys, it doesn't really make much difference.

OTOH, semi-weighted and unweighted keys are "quicker" than weighted (hammer action) keys, it's easier to do same-note repetitions, they're better for organ and most synth playing. It's not that weighted action boards are better or worse than semiweighted/unweighted, it depends on the application.
