Solution to "WAVE/EXPANSION MEMORY DAMAGED" yet?

Solution to "WAVE/EXPANSION MEMORY DAMAGED" yet?

Hi,

Is there any way to fix this quite old problem? I bough a Fantom-6 lately and after a couple of months I got this error message. Previously I owned a Fantom 7 for over an year and there was no problems.
After this error message I tried the "shift- exit- enter" combination to fix the memory. Didn't work. Then I checked the firmaware version. It was 2.1. I updated it into the latest, 3.01. Error message again. Tried again "shif- exit -enter" combination, but the error is still there.

Is there anything else I could try? Factory reset of the machine or something...Is there actually been mechanically faulty memories out there, or is this all just a software problem?

Didn't work...
Did you press these keys before power on and keep pressed while the unit boots?

I confirm you this sequence works properly. ( I done it a year ago )

Best regards,
Flavio

Didn't work
I powered it on with those keys pressed...
First the display says "ERROR Wave/Expansion memory damaged"
After pressing those 3 keys simultaneously again, I'll get "ERROR Wave/Expansion memory damaged" with "CONTINUE " and "TRY RECOVERY" buttons
after trying "TRY RECOVERY" I'll get "Function error !"

✅ Roland Fantom – Memory Error: Summary of All Steps to Try

If you get the “Wave/Expansion Memory Damaged” error on a Fantom 6/7/8, try the following steps in order:

---

1. Forced Memory Format
This is the official first step.

1. Turn the Fantom OFF
2. Hold SHIFT + EXIT + ENTER
3. Turn the Fantom ON while still holding the keys
4. Keep holding until the format screen appears

If the format completes but the error returns, continue below.

---

2. Factory Reset (if you can reach the menu)
If the keyboard boots far enough to access the menu:

1. Press MENU
2. Go to UTILITY
3. Select FACTORY RESET
4. Confirm and reboot

If the error appears before the menu loads, skip this step.

---

3. Reinstall the System Firmware from USB
Sometimes the internal memory map becomes corrupted and needs a full OS reinstall.

1. Download the latest System Program from Roland’s website
2. Copy it to a USB stick
3. Boot the Fantom in update mode
4. Reinstall the firmware completely

If the error still appears after a clean reinstall, continue.

---

4. If all resets fail → Likely hardware failure
According to Roland tech support and repair forums:

- Some Fantom units have faulty internal flash memory (NAND)
- When the chip cannot be formatted, the error keeps returning
- The only fix is main board replacement at a service center

This happens rarely, but it does happen.

---

✅ Short conclusion
If forced format + factory reset + full firmware reinstall all fail, the internal memory is physically damaged and the unit needs service.
