Buy Fantom-07 for live gigs when I already have Fantom-7 ?

Buy Fantom-07 for live gigs when I already have Fantom-7 ?

Hi all,

I know that this is a very luxurious 'problem', but I will ask anyway :

I am the proud owner of the Fantom 7 and of course I was surprised (in a positive way) when reading about the new Fantom-07.

I am a live band gigging keyboardist (and less production), and I would say that the Fantom 7 IS kind of heavy to carry around (unhandy) so the lighter weight of the 07 motivates a lot (I hope there will be a carrying bag for it to carry on the back).

I don't want to get rid of my Fantom 7, I see it as my main music making source at home, can do anything I want for my musical needs.

Thoughts:

- Is it too much to buy the Fantom-07 only for live gigs ? (And leave the big Fantom 7 at home in the home-studio).

- In what way should/could I 'transfer' my already (performance)-scenes from the 7 to the 07 ?

- What more workflow can I do between them ?

Of course I am thinking of more pros/cons but just wondering if someone else has some other thoughts.

Thank you in advance,

CJ

I have been gigging with my FA07 and was amazing piece of gear, very reliable and amazingly good sounding / light weight.

For me, if you are happy with your Fantom sound and you're not worried about the lack of V-Piano, the Fantom 0 should work...

Thanks for your reply Neomad !

Yes I am used to the Roland sounds and I can deal with it, also the user interface/workflow of the Fantom-series (I used to have Fantom X too and the old FA76).

Would be such a relieved feeling to have these in a lightweight gigging version next to my stay-at-home heavy Fantom

I'm in the same boat as you. Have a 7 but am getting tired of the size and weight in a hard case for gigging so the 07 is very attractive. Near as I can tell, if you can live without V-Piano, only 256MB of keyboard-triggered samples, no nZyme, no aftertouch, and not all of the expansions installed at once the 07 should do the trick. Obviously there are other differences but for gigging in a cover band those are the big ones to think about. Not sure yet exactly how many expansions you can install at once (and if you want the 4 models those are $150 each vs free on the 7).

As far as exporting scenes from the 7 and importing to the 07, Roland says it should work with the following caveats: parameters not available on the 07 will be ignored when importing, expansions not installed will cause a blank patch in a given zone, V-piano will probably also show as a blank patch in Zone 1. I plan on following this same path so I"m hoping this will be relatively painless.

Yes Pianoman,

I think for 'common' (coverband-)gigs the 07 would suit the needs, very easy to carry around too.

Somehow I always come back to Roland (even though I appreciate my experience with Korg and Yamaha Motifs).

I think I am ' hooked' on Roland (Fantom) for years now, so to me it feels okay to have a 'big' Fantom at home, and a 'small' Fantom to carry around for gigs etc.

And thank you for the info about transferring from Fantom-7 to 07 !

Yes, the one 'sampling' I do is just use some imported one-shots audio-snippets, no multi-sampling etc.

So, what's your plan, going to buy the 07 ? (I tend to, but just for the sake of it I wanna play it first in a music store)

Same here. I want to see how the keybed feels compared to the 7 and my old X7 (which I loved for live playing). As long as it's a reasonable replica of either of those I'll probably pull the trigger.

Now that’s great problem to have 👍😊
The answer is always YES!
You can never have too many keyboards!
