Importing from FA-06/07/08

Dos anyone know whether or not it’s easy to import existing sequences from the FA series? Can this be done by simply plugging the USB key from a FA into the Fantom-O? I appreciate I’d probably need to re-jig some of the assigned sounds, but will all other sequence information transfer across without corruption?

Would be nice to be able to upgrade and transfer across existing work without too much hassle!

I do not believe that this can easly be done since FA and Fantom-0 have diferent sound engines and parameters,

I have future plans to upgrade the FA Editor to Fantom-0 and, maybe include some convertion tool between them, but first I need to get this new toy, which is not planned for this year...

Bummer! Thanks for the reply though and it would be a ‘nice to have’ rather than essential requirement if I’m going to upgrade.

This includes studio sets also? I’ve programmed about 450 studio sets. I was wondering if there is anything I can copy over when I want to upgrade to a Fantom-0? I understand that the preset sound layout is different but I wonder if I can do something to minimize the tremendous programming work when I switch. Are FA-06 backup files compatible in some shape or form?

The only problem I have with the FA-06 is the small amount of rhythm patterns I could load into the userbank. Does anyone know how many midi rhythm patterns I can upload to the Fantom-0? That must be improved right?

Thanks in advance.

Apart from the assigned sounds, sequences are simply MIDI events. Unless they include system exclusive parameters (say, if you were tweaking knobs during the sequence), they should be universal, just use the FA's ability to export in SMF format to get them into any other standard MIDI sequencer.

The problem is that the Fantom doesn't have a traditional sequencer in it. The manual says it can import SMF, but as "patterns." I don't know what limitations you may run into there, depending on what it is you're trying to do. Worst case, though, you can bring them into some other sequencer which, in turn, is connected to the Fantom. Ableton or Logic might be best because of Fantom's direct support for them, but you can probably even just bring your sequences into some smartphone app, if all you need to do is play them as needed. But yes, unless you used the GM sounds in the FA, the sounds will have to be re-specified in whatever you bring the sequence into. If you did use GM sounds, if you bring them into something with a GM sound set, the remapping should be automatic. (I don't think the Fantom itself has a GM set.)

May be Fantom will have a 'traditional linear' sequencer anytime soon ?

Is much deeper than that...
- Sounds list and addresses are totally different.
- MIDI Specs including CCs and SysEx are totally different, in address and data structure.

Yes, I said that sounds would have to be respecified when bringing into something else, unless he used GM and bring it into something that is GM compatible; and likewise I made the exception for sysex (which you might get if, for example, if you were doing live knob manipulations during the recording of the sequence). CCs are mostly universal, however. So there's no problem with things like sustain pedal. Mod wheel could be tricky... the mod wheel CC itself is universal, but what it is programmed to do in a given patch can vary, so that would be an example of something else that could need manual finessing. But MIDI sequences are generally basically portable by design. That's why people can download MIDI files and play them on their computers or keyboards in the first place. Even getting 90% there is a lot better than having to start from scratch.

Ordinary MIDI sequences are manly selection of GM tones, playing notes and CCs...
The main issue Is how to get closer/similar sounds on both keyboards, since settings, waves and dinamics are different.
