Setting up JD-XA in Logic X.

Hi guys, I am really at my wits end with this and I am hoping some kind soul here can help me.

I have searched all the topics online I could find regarding MIDI setup with the JD-XA, and Logic in particular, but I seem to still be unable to get the JD-XA working as intended. I am getting multiple MIDI notes being recorded whenever I try to record MIDI either using the JD-XAs own keyboard OR my master MIDI controller keyboard. I have changed all the MIDI channels for each part in the JD-XA to 1, and I have tried every combination of RemoteKBD, and Local on/off. Doesn't seem to matter, I still get duplicate MIDI notes for every "part" of whatever patch I am currently trying to record.

Another strange issue is that if I have MIDI data on my JD-XA track, and I try to record a different MIDI part to another one of my hardware synths, the MIDI on the JD-XA track will somehow record itself onto the other synths MIDI track... I have never seen this issue in 15 + years of using Logic...

I have tried both the standard MIDI ports on the JD-XA as well as USB MIDI and they both produce the same duplicate MIDI data.

I feel like I must be missing something obvious... but I really could use some help. Love the sound of the JD-XA, but man... this MIDI protocol they are using is pretty confusing.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

Hi JFane. I have my JD-XA piped into Logic Pro, without issue. IIRC, I had double-notes happening early on also - and had to dink around with the settings to get that stopped. Unfortunately, we're moving, and my gear is boxed up for a few weeks.. Sorry I can't help directly. Going by memory though -- you were on the right track. I *think* I separated each voice to their own channel, had Local Off, etc. In my case -- I had a loop-back happening, where MIDI out was being routed back to my JD-XA. I was able to watch this happening using SNOIZE MIDI monitor. You definitely want something similar in your chain, to track down what's happening. There was an email I had from user VennD. (Oscar Finch) which helped. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing here (much of his other tips ended up in the JD-XA BKMs doc...)

Several ways of working in Logic with the JD-XA
I use it as an aggregate device - (input only) so it shows up as inputs 19/20 on my interface inputs in Logic.
It is also sequenced via USB.
Here are some things I have learned working this way.
1.You can play individual midi channels from another controller only.
2.You can create an external midi instrument (without audio input) and sequence all 8 midi channels on a Midi Instrument / per Midi Channel basis with full use of all the Midi FX in Logic on each part - this is super hand as i can use Numerology as a Midi Effect and get some very complex stuff going on but I digress.
3.If you set a JD-XA Midi Instrument up and set Channels to ALL it will record all the midi data from ALL selected / layered Analog and Digital Parts so long as you play the JD-XA keyboard and NOT a controller - it will even record JD-XA arp events this way too.
This has several benefits as you can for example - record those lovely layered parts and play them back exactly how you hear them and played them on the JD-XA but can also explode the main track and it will split the midi data for each layer across the respective channels and allow you to edit each layer seperately with independent CC's etc.
4.When working this way you can then sequence the other JD-XA parts independently.
5.Whether or not you choose have the Audo routed back in on the Master JD-XA midi instrument is entirely up to you. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't and just have a separate Audio track active instead.
Hope that helps some.

Hope this helps. If you don't have it sorted out, when I finish my move - i'll fire up Logic Pro and share my settings. Note: I route stuff all to hell and back, using an iConnectMIDI4+ in the mix, so it may look perplexing..

Joe,

Thank you for taking the time to reply I really appreciate it. I feel like I have tried every combo of having Local kbd on and off, as well as remote kbd on and off. Ive tried USB midi as well as normal midi, and I just can't get rid of the overlapping midi notes. Ive tried using the external MIDI instrument plugin as well as just using a normal external MIDI track with the regular midi input and output.
Honestly I don't even want to use the built in sequencer or anything... I only use the JD-XA as a pad machine, and I just want to be able to record midi performances and then record the part as audio. Doesn't seem like too much to ask but it seems very difficult on this synth!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I would certainly love to hear the exact specifics of your setup once you have moved.

Best,
Julian
