Linnstrument as expressive Controller?
26 Apr 2015, 10:49Has anyone tried this with the I7 SN patches? Wondering if the two would be a good combination.

As to the number of midi cc available for the SN patches, according to the Parameters Guide many have 8 or more cc parameters assigned - that's why I wonder how the two would work together. My Linnstrument arrived last week so I'm just beginning to dig deep into its capabilities. A few issues with my computer have kept me from trying it with my hardware. But I have been using it with Omnisphere with mostly mono legato type sounds. You can create a different & interesting sounding performance with Linnstrument vs. typical keyboard playing along with controllers. The setup of the synth and Linnstrument for each type of sound you want to play is key to getting what you expect out of the system. As you move your finger left & right this obviously controls the pitch but if you slide your fingers up & down it can send a midi CC. The lower row can be assigned to send a different CC. Of course pressure sends a different CC. Lots of possibilities. Manual vibrato is quite a challenge to get right. If you see some of the youtube demos the vibrato is exaggerated in a very non musical way. Roger Linn's team is still developing the firmware so there is plenty more to come.
I don't have a Integra but among other things I have a Jupiter 80. Being able to control the toneblender remotely should allow for interesting sonics but I'm less excited about SN acoustic instruments for the simple fact they receive very few midi CCs. It seems very few people are using Linnstrument with hardware synths. Soft synths are probably the way to go with Linnstrument. Vocal type sounds are very interesting to me and I'm going to order 8DIO's Jenifer sample library for use with my new toy.
The board itself is a beautiful playing surface when lit up and just beckons you to touch it. The playing surface is quite smooth and slightly soft to the touch. I'm used to playing stringed instruments and keyboard but never got along with the Chapman stick. Its similar to the Chapman so I'm finding it a challenge to find my notes & scales even though I've very familiar with the guitar & bass. I suppose it just takes practice!
