Midi track volume and timing... Please help...!

Midi track volume and timing... Please help...!

Hey guys! Ok, so I'm still a bit new to the G8, and I have an issue I'm not sure what the problem is, well, I have two problems actually. The first problem is I can't figure out how to change a midi track's volume? I can change the part volume, but I have that smae part on several midi tracks in my song, and I only want to turn up the volume on one of the midi tracks. However, if I turn up the part volume, it turns up every midi track that's using that part. So, is there a way to adjust the volume of individual midi tracks???

My second question relates to transferring songs into a DAW. What I've been doing is hooking the G8 up to my computer via my audio interface and just playing a track at a time into the DAW and recording it. I just use the main audio outputs of the G8 into my interface audio inputs. It's time consuming to say the least...and it doesn't seem to work well. The problem I'm having is some tracks don't seem to transfer over in the correct time. Here's a scenario that happened recently. I played the complete song on the roland and recorded it into my DAW...everything worked fine and i had a simple two track "master" of the song in my DAW. Then I noticed there were a couple parts that needed volume adjustments, so I went to the G8 and tried to adjust the volume of a few individual midi tracks and realized I couldn't (hence the first question above). So, then I decided to just single out the tracks that needed volume adjustment and bring those over into the DAW separately. So, I started a new project in the DAW, brought over the bass parts together, the snare parts together, and the rest of the song together. So I had three tracks in the DAW, I just needed to adjust the bass and snare a bit independently. So, I aligned up the three tracks in the DAW, the bass and snare tracks aligned perfectly, and the front half of the rest of the song alinged perfectly as well. But about half way through, it's like that track shifted and it's late now! I don't know how this is possible since it plays just fine in the roland and it recorded into the DAW just fine when I played everything together at the same time...? It only seems to happen when I bring over tracks separately. How can the first half be fine and the second half be off?

Any ideas? You help is greatly appreciated!

Brian

on the volume issue.. sounds like your sharing the same midi channel..
if this is intentional then to adjust the volume of each track independently you need to visit each track and then press PATCH edit and under general adjust the volume there.

for recording to daws it sounds like your having latency problems
A quick solution without any tech stuff..
export your song as midi and then transfer to the daw
play the midi file from the DAW instead of the fantom for each track and record audio this should keep everything in sync

No, not directly.

There is no such thing as volume for a MIDI Track. MIDI Volume messages are channel specific like all other MIDI Control Change messages, so they affect any Parts assigned to their specific channel.

MIDI Tracks on the Fantom-G are not channel specific.

You can change the velocity of the notes in a MIDI Track, but you will need to do this for each Phrase in the MIDI Track. That's a lot of work and probably won't give you the result you seek.

You can solo the MIDI Track and record it into an Audio Track (on the Fantom-G). You can then control the volume of the Audio Track with the Fantom-G's mixer. I'm not sure if that is easier than recording the Fantom-G's MIDI Tracks into your DAW's audio tracks (which you have already done.)

When you say I'm sharing the same midi channel, what do you mean? I'm using the same "part" (there's only 16 parts available, so each part is often used more than once in a song), is that what you mean?

I've never exported a midi file from the G8, but wouldn't a midi file just include midi data, not the actual sounds? If so, how will playing the midi data in my DAW work when the sounds are on the G8?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

from the DAW with the midi output > to the G8 on the midi in.
G8 has usb-midi interface.
So the DAW should see at the midi out somethng like "Fantom-G Midi out".
Set the midi track on that output and.. the G will receive the midi informations.

So, lets assume that you are using one part with multiple patches.

When you press start on a sequencer, it selects the patch via a PC message and the part volume by a CC 07 message.
If a subsequent patch needs to be played at a different part volume than the last patch played on that part, then at the time that you send the PC message to that part (to change the patch) you should insert a CC 07 [0-127] message to set the part volume. You can insert this message in the microscope view.
