Jupiter 80: Registrations and DAW MIDI Sequencing

3 Feb 2013, 17:27
Hello,

I am thinking of buying a Roland Jupiter 80 because it has so many cool Registrations (like "Big Mouth Pad", "Dream Drone", Aranjues", etc). I really like the 76 keys on the Jupiter 80. I currently own the Integra 7. I do not play out live, but I really like many of the Registrations in the Jupiter 80.

I do a lot of MIDI sequencing (Macbook Pro Computer, Cubase 7 software). I can not use Sonar for sequencing since it is not offered for the Mac.

The Integra 7 works well with Cubase 7 and my Mac Computer. for my sequencing I am able to load up sounds into a studio set on the Integra 7 and control volumes, panning, etc. from cubase. Each part/patch is on a separate MIDI channel in the Integra 7.

Yesterday I went to my local music store and tried out the Jupiter 80 using a Registration. Cubase recorded the MIDI data from each of the 4 parts in the Registrations (Upper, Lower, Solo, Percussion) just fine. Cubase also was able to record the notes that the Arpeggiator in the Jupiter 80 created. I could see the MIDI note data in Cubase for each of the tracks (1-4). When I played back the Midi sequence via Cubase, I went to adjust the volume level of each track (inside of Cubase) and 2 of the tracks I could adjust the volume. The Other 2 tracks had had no sound on them (I could see midi activity inside of Cubase for those tracks <those tracks showed the midi meter going up and down>). The tracks were not muted in Cubase. We tried this same process on totally different computer that the store had and there was no sound out of those tracks. We also did a "factory reset" on the Jupiter 80 but still came up with no sound for those 2 tracks (remember there are midi notes on the tracks with no sound). We then tried a totally different Registration and had the same result. We then hooked up the Integra 7, and had no problems (sounds for each track).

At this point I at a loss as far as what to try next. Maybe the Jupiter 80 would not be the best thing for me to use for my sequencing.

Hi Bill,
It should be no problem doing what you want, bearing in mind that the Jupiter-80 only have 4 Parts and each one should be linked to a specific MIDI channel (but that you already know ;-)).

Two questions:
1- Which Parts could you Playback and which ones you couldn't ?
2- Which MIDI channel were you using for each part (Upper, Lower, Solo, Percussion) ?
Make Music and be Happy !!

I believe whatever was on Channel 3 did not play back (I saw midi notes on that track and could see the midi activity meter in Cubase 7 moving so I know it was sending information out). I do not know what MIDI channel was used for each part (it must have been whatever the default is in the board). Sorry I am so vague since I don't have the Jupiter 80 in my possession.

When I recorded the MIDI information into Cubase, I created a MIDI track in Cubase and it was set to ANY MIDI Channel. Cubase will then record MIDI information that is coming out of ANY MIDI channel on the Jupiter 80. Once you have the MIDI track recorded in Cubase, you can do a "Dissolve Part" function in Cubase which will then take the MIDI information in the one track and split it out by MIDI channel into Cubase (so you end up with 4 tracks, each with its own MIDI Channel <1, 2, 3, 4>). This same process is what I do with my Yamaha Motif XF6 and it works fine.

So I am baffled as to why I am not hearing any audio on a couple of the tracks (since there is MIDI note information in those tracks). I should be hearing something.

I think the Jupiter 80 is a great keyboard but I am a bit nervous about buying it at this point until I figure out what I am doing wrong.

Bill

Since you see MIDI data flowing both directions, I suspect that the tracks you are not hearing are getting a CC7=0 embedded at the head of the track, setting its volume to zero. Go into Cubase and check the bad tracks to see if they have a CC7 with a very low or zero value. Even if you do not see that, have Cubase delete any CC7 controls in the track and see if that solves the problem. If it does, you would need to determine how the CC7 got there to begin with.

Good luck !

Hi Bill,

This issue is absolutely NOT a fault within the JP80.

I use mine with Logic Studio and it records and plays back the 4 channels with no problems.

This is either a volume CC7 as advised above or a MIDI filter setting somewhere in the system.

I have also split out tracks by channel and had no problems with playback.

Sorry to be unable to get more specific as I don't use Cubase.

Regards,
Marty.

I have checked in Cubase 7 looking at the "List Editor" and made sure that nothing is filtered out and I see no CC7 (volume) events inserted.

Keep in mind that I have used Cubase with a Roland Integra 7 and have had NO volume issues (I see MIDI note data and I can hear the sound of the Integra 7 that corresponds with the notes that are in the track). This is why I think it is a Jupiter 80 issue. I am trying to figure out what is not set correctly in the Jupiter 80 that is causing no volume for a couple of the parts in the Registration.
