A Few Questions from a New Jupiter 80 Owner

A Few Questions from a New Jupiter 80 Owner

19 Oct 2011, 23:24
My keyboard arrived today and I must say it is much better than I expected.
This thing sounds incredible and is more fun to play than my Oasys.

I do have a few questions which I'm sure are all answered in the guide but I didnt look yet.

Help me understand how th sounds are layed out?

So far all I've done is turn it on and use the wheel to scroll through the sounds.
For example, on a typical synth you will have x amount of banks and each bank contains 128 sounds.
How does it work on the J-80? I'm just trying to understand the structure and layout in my head.

Also, how do you jump directly to a presets? I dont see anything on the control surface to select banks and patch numbers?

Thanks guys!

Here we go...

Registrations are collections of 2 x Live sets (upper and lower) and a percussion and solo voice - each of which can be switched on or off whilst playing.

Each live set can contain up to 4 tones. Percussion and solo voices contain 1 tone each

Each tone can use three partials (soundwaves or samples).

By double-tapping on a live set or tone, you can browse by categories (you will see there are some blank categories - some think this is for a future upgrade to fill - would be nice if true!)

You can navigate through registrations by using the bank buttons on the front, underneath the keyboard. Or you can use the rainbow buttons to go to specific sounds categories.

There are 256 registrations.
There are 2300 live sets
There are 1900 tones
There are 336 PCM samples (used in partials if desired)

That's a whole lot of sonic power!

Hope that helps get you started :-)

Thanks cello but I'm still confused :(

All I want to do is just browse the 2500 sounds which are on this synth. Ive been turning the giant wheel scrolling through the combis, but there isnt anywhere near 2500 thats for sure.

Also, when you find a sound you like, how do I just punch it in directly without having to use the scroll wheel to get there? I like the old days, everything seems so hard now, I was reading the manual but I dont get it.

My brain is so used to Korgs patch system, regular sounds and combis, this thing is stressing me out!

I hear what you're saying re Korg v Roland - but is a bit like comparing apples and oranges!

Okay, start by switching off your Jp-80.

Turn it on again.

The screen shows 'Planet Jupiter'

On the layer switches (left of the screen), switch off percussion, Lower and solo.

Tap on the screen where it says "0364: Callisto" - it should highlight in blue.

Use the scroll wheel anti-clockwise until you get to "0001: Jupiter Brass 1"

Play some notes and enjoy :-)

Then, use the scroll wheel or the inc button, move to the next sound, "0002: Jupiter Brass 2", play some notes and enjoy! And so on...

Keep doing that another 2,298 times and you'll get to hear some magical music happening :-)

Hope that helps a little!

Ok got it, thanks cello.

I also managed to turn off the split points to so I could enujoy the entire sound across the whole keyboard.

Ok, so far so good, so now lets sayI like sound # 2161 LFO Poly and I want this sound alone, not split and layered with anything else. So now I save it in a blank spot correct?

Ok, so then how do I bring up sound #2161 or the sound that I saved directly without having to go through all the trouble of having to turn off "Lower", Perc" Solo", and not having to use the wheekl to scroll to the sound.

Is there a way to instantly bring it up during live performance quickly?

Many thanks.

By the way, the synths, pads and swells on this things are amazing.

You save it as a tone. And you can say it further as a live set. And finally, you create a registration where only that particular tone or live set is active. And there you can access it directly. It's not really rocket science and it would be good to read the manual. It's there not without a reason.

Hi,

This may help he is saying.

JP80 is tree structure.
If I illustrate that, it should be like this:

Registration
|
LiveSet
|
Tone
|
partial tone(in case of Supernatural Synth)

I have Korg M50, but the way JP80 is layering is much better than any other keyboards.
you will see while you are playing around.

that was harsh. Harsh.

Bad. Demotivating. You lessen the pupil's self-esteem and imperil his desire of learning and cripple his personality and esclude him from a successful life.

If he ever seeks refuge into chemical enhancements to his personality,

it will be YOUR fault.
