My Home Studio (in progress)

My Home Studio (in progress)

31 May 2004, 16:41
I thought I'd share the details of the home studio that I am gradually building. Note that I am waiting for a couple of the components to become available. Suggestions, thoughts, comments?

KEYBOARD / RECORDING:

Roland Fantom-X8: Master controller / ROMpler / Sampler
Roland V-Synth: Synth controller / VA / Sound Design
Roland KC-350: Amplifier
Emagic Logic Pro: Audio / MIDI software studio
Apple 17" Powerbook G4: Logic Pro host
Mackie Onyx 1640**: 16-channel Mixer / firewire audio interface
T.C. Helicon VoicePrism+: Dedicated harmony and voice processor
Shure Beta 87, 57, and 58 mics.
Peavey Deltafex: Dedicated stereo reverb processor
Alesis M1 Active MkII: Studio monitor speakers
Furman PL-8: Power conditioner / rack light module

**: This has been announced, and should be shipping with the firewire interface in August 2004.

GUITAR:

Roland GI-20: Guitar GK->MIDI interface
Fender Lonestar Stratocaster w/GK interface
Roland VGA-3 Amp: With GK-based guitar and amp modeling
Fender "Sting" Precision Bass
Boss GT-6: Multieffects floor unit
Taylor 814ce Acoustic Guitar

WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL OF THIS?

I play in a weekly rehearsal band that tends toward classic rock / blues / pop covers, and makes a CD every once in a while for personal entertainment. We've been known to play the occasional party. I also assist equipment-challenged friends with their recordings for various purposes. I love gear as much as I love playing music.

u sure got a lotta juice in that stuff. hmm. how much does it cost you to make a studio like that?

my so called studio consists of a FS61 and a pair of headfones.!

IMHO Well, you can start your own band and even produce albums if u gotta singer. and you are missing a vital equipment - TRITON series and a XV series, you wont need theses either since you have a FX, but for that **studio** look, u gotta have lotsa blue-screen stuff. one color screen isnt enough. ;-)

Isnt Alesis MIDIverb, an advantage? and how in the world did u have money to buy all these stuff?

Sambasevam -

As music is my main hobby (not profession), I have not had to rely on it to be profitable. I run a software company during the day that has helped feed the equipment habit. But I think that the more important note is that I have been *gradually* building this studio over a period of about ten years. I didn't just walk into a store with $20K and buy everything in sight! ;-)

I have also taken advantage of the 'equipment train': buying a synth, keeping it a few years, selling it, adding a bit more money, buying a new synth, etc... In the past I have owned a Roland D-10, D-70, Fantom-S88, and Korg X2 -- all of which I have sold to help fund new purchases.

Another important note is that with today's technology, phenominal music can be made with an 'FS61 and pair of headphones'. Look at all the classic albums that were recorded with cheap instruments, a tape four-track, and someone's tiled bathroom for 'reverb'. Diligence and talent mean far more than the amount of gear you have.

Regarding the Alesis MIDIverb: it really depends on your goals. Having a dedicated reverb processor is certainly useful -- I have owned one (the cheaper Deltafex) for years that I use through one of the effects sends on my mixer so all the vocals can share its capabilities -- but don't forget that your S61 has a fairly complete effects system built-in. I recently invested a considerable amount of money in a VoicePrism+, which I am now using instead of the Deltafex. But that luxury was really to compensate for my own lack of vocal talent. ;-)

PS: I do actually have a band, though it is of the 'rehearsal and fun' variety rather than a gigging one. Playing music with others is one of life's greatest joys, IMHO. That is another reason that I have so much gear -- we typically have three people mic'd for vocals, plus keys, drums, 1-2 guitars, and a bass. We jam weekly at my office (I dedicated a 20x15 room to the permanent installation of all the gear); another perk of my day-job.

great!

its cool and its god's wishes that you are both a musician AND a programmer. cool guy u r!! I also wanna work hard, earn valuable money, invest half of it in my equipment and the other half for a decent living.

i dont wanna become A.R.Rahmen or J Lo but i wanna become a respectable studio musician having fun while producing music and earning in that way. i also want my family and i enjoy being with them.

It's all god's grace. and i will surely try to attain my goal.someday.

:-))))
