My impression of the NX

My impression of the NX

I own a GX upgraded with the K-RD700GX1SuperNATURAL Piano Kit.
Yesterday I had the chance to play the new NX.

My very first impression of the piano sound (called "Concert") was: that's exactly what I'm used to.
I think the sounds of this expansion board are now nothing but the internal piano sounds.

In a direct comparison you might think the NX sounds are a bit more transparent or airy but this is possibly not a matter of the sounds themselves but of the following audio circuits like preamps etc., but I'm not sure.
Anyway the difference is not huge.

The sound focus function is something like an exciter that enhances the sound if applied with caution and turns the sound into mono if used heavily.

The Multi-effects 1 and 2 don't have a knob anymore and are switched on/off by the S1 and S2 buttons.
Also the rotary speed can be switched slow/fast by these buttons.

The SN-Epianos are apparently just the same like in the GX which means to me a poor quality.
I'm using the SRX-12 (Classic EPs) expansion board for really authentic Epianos, but the NX doesn't provide expansion slots any more.

And there are not any more the Audio Key function and the arpeggiator.
However it has that audio recording feature.

I didn't bother about all the other sounds. They're certainly of the usually good Roland qualiity.

So all in all I'm satisfied that there's definitely no need to change to the NX.
On the contrary the GX is maybe even the more flexible model and surely the more affordable one considering the expected dropping prices on the used intruments market.

hey keyfix- thanks for your post and review of the NX! im actually in the market right now to get a NX and was wondering how it differs from a GX-F.

honestly i am quite dissappointed that the NX nolonger has a slot for SRX. I too wanted to slap in a nice ep or watnot of my choice in there as im not the biggest fan of the supernatural EP's when compared to my CP1's EP's.

the reason why im seriously considering to get a NX (even though i already have a VPiano, CP1, and StageEX) is for the other lush piano's the RD has mated with the ultra realistic PHA3 keybed. I know how great it feels from my VPiano.

as you, i too thought the SoundFocus was nothing more than an enhancer or maybe like a BBE sonic maximizer at best. i dont really care about the other sounds either, but having a drum loop thingie is a nice feature to have for practicing. :)

do you know if you can loop audio tracks or loop MIDI tracks? i ask because i want to make backing loops in my FantomG8 and run them in the USB drive. i suppose worst case i can make a long 15min loop or something in the bps i normally play (80 and 105) and use as an audio file.

Keyfix- does your unit have issues playing mp3 while playing fast passages? The unit I tried yesterday seemed like it had latency problem. Notes were like cutoff. I was like wtf?

anyone else have the same issues i posted? if saw a youtube clip of someone finding the same issue when playing over USB drive (MP3 music file).

is there any way to fix this? this is the only thing that is holding up my purchase. thanks...

there are a few machines that quote "playback of mp3" but then struggle.. it takes quite some horsepower.. i would suggest simply get a larger usb drive and recode stuff to wav..

ahh, thanks for the tip. i'll get my wav file in there and visit my local shop again. :D

i didnt know mp3's bogged down vs wav...i would assume mp3's would be easier for the machine to decode as it's lighter than wav.

Actually .wav is a linear, uncompressed format that doesn't have to be "decoded" at all. Unlike mp3, which is compressed, and indeed has to be decoded. Anyways... since you can buy a very decent $50 mp3 player nowadays, not why it is hard to accomplish :-)

Ahhh! Learning something everyday, thanks art! :D.

im also running into the problem of running out of polyphony and the RD making VERY NOTICABLE note dropouts.

i can arpeggiate on my CP1 with damper down basically endlessly and not hear obvious drop outs if at all. i think this is another area im going to have issues on the RD because i use continuous damper pedal a lot when playing softer passages. when it comes to the playability this is where im noticing a huge gap between my CP1/VPiano vs RD700NX. RD reminds me it's more of a synth with limited polyphony where CP1/VP confirms it's a digital piano. i need to keep worrying about running out of polyphony on the RD... like when im playing my FG8.

overall sound is very warm and nice though on the RD... hummmm... i will need to think this over some more.

my curiosity got the better of me so i went and played a multitude of pianos today.

verdict on piano sounds

700nx. great keyboard action. its has less travel than the PHA2 which makes it different. piano sound great but.....C two octaves above middle C. the notes decay of far to fast creating a bell type sound... the last octave after that is fine. but how could they screw that up so bad! if it was not for that i would have taken it home.

roland 300nx and fp7f. the keyboard action is not as good as the 700nx

roland v piano. action heavier than 700nx. sound......... it does sound a bit artificial. the roland supernatural sounds are better than the v piano.

yamaha cp1 and cp5. nice actions. sound thin and uninspiring
