rhythm patch edit

rhythm patch edit

27 Sep 2010, 10:55
hey guys,

I am trying to make changes to rhythm patches in a rhythm set, and then use them in my performance. Specifically I would like to change the sound of some of the kicks in a Rhythm Set.

I select MODE | PATCH, and press enter to go to the Patch List Screen.

I then select F6 [RHYTHM] to enter the Rhythm list and select USER:020 Nu Technica and press enter to select this user Rhythm.

This brings me back to the Patch Play Screen and the selected Rhythm is USER:020 Nu Technica.

I now want to edit one of the kicks in this Rhythm Set, set so I press the key on the keyboard that corresponds to the kick I want to edit, and I can hear it sound. I now press EDIT | PATCH to edit the patch in the patch edit screen, and can play around with the cutoff and resonance. I can hear the sound change immediately.

Now that I have found the sound I am looking for, I press the EDIT | WRITE button, press F2 PAT/RHY and save the Rhythm Set into USER:020 Nu Technica.

I can at this point turn the JUNO off and On again, and if I load up the User Rhythm Set 020:Nu Technica, I can hear my changes from before.

Now I want to make the changes in my user Rhythm Pattern available to me in my performance. I go to my performance, by pressing MODE | PERFORMANCE and scrolling over to my saved performance.

I press EDIT | RHYTHM PATTERN, and then SHIFT + F5 [GRP EDIT] and select USER:020 Nu Technica as the Rhy part, and write this to the Rhythm Set, which incidentally is also in the user area. When I press the keyboard key that corresponds to the kick I modified, I do NOT get the changes I made.

If I now go back to patch MODE | PATCH, and press the key that I made changes to, I can hear the changes. Also when I load up my performance, the Part 10 is now U020:NuTechnica, which is the Rhythm Set I made changes to.

I dont seem to end up with the changes I have made to the rhythm set once I get back to the performance.

Am I doing it right?

That sounds right, thanks for the thorough description.

The one thing I can imagine missing is that you edited the wrong kick. There are no less than ten kicks in the Nu Technica kit. Did you check the pattern edit to see exactly which note is being played?

hey dbijoux

thanks for the reply. I have just double checked and I am very certain that I am using the correct kicks as I am using the same keyboard key each time. C6 Analog Kick 5 and B6 analog kick 3.

Hi Huggles!

I don't actually own a Juno G, but my guess is that if you are using the sound modify knobs to edit the sound, that this data is stored as Performance data as opposed to patch edit data. Try going into you patch edit screen and using the value dial to make changes to the parameter you wish to edit and then writing these changes to a user memory location.

Hope that helps!

Hi PiaknowGuy

my general work flow process is to select the patch I want to edit, and make those edits until I am happy with the sound and then save the patch into the user memory location. Once I have the patch sounding the way I want it to, and having saved it, I select that patch to use as a part in my performance.

So if I am making a change to USER:002 AutoTrance,I do this in patch edit mode, and then once I have saved the patch, I go to performance mode and select the patch from the user patches. Now I have my modified patch available as a part in my performance.

I am trying to do the same thing with rhythm sets, by first editing the rhythm patch in patch edit mode, until I have a sound I like, in this case it was Nu Technica Analog Kick 5, saving it, and then trying to use it in my performance. In my performance I have selected USER020 NU TECHNICA as the Rhythm Group's Rhythm Set. The sound is not the same, and if I select EDIT | PATCH and check some of the values I had changed while in the patch edit screens, they are not the same.

Are you using the Rhythm Patterns in a song? I ask because maybe there is a patch-edit recorded in the performance. I'm not sure how that would work with how you've described things, I believe Rhythm Patterns override the performance, but I suppose it's feasible.

I'd say you were accidently selecting the PRST:Nu Technica instead of USER but you already covered that. Outside of some other change, there shouldn't be a reason the edited kit isn't working as expected with the new kicks.

Hi huggles,

There are a couple of reasons why the rhythm kit isn't sounding the same with each other in patch and performance mode.
Firstly, when you have completed editing the desired rhythm kit in patch edit categories (Window), that rhythm kit (I WILL USE KICK DRUM AS AN EXAMPLE IN THIS POST) in which ever part you put into in performance mode, will not sound the same as in patch mode. What you need to do in performance mode is go to the user kick drum you made edits to, deselect the kick drum and then reselect. By doing this, the original existing kick drum in performance mode is being refreshed to the edited kick drum from in patch mode. Now the kick drum patch edits will be exactly the same in patch and performance mode.

Also in patch mode, go into the effects processor window and copy all routing values exactly the same into performance effects processor window, for the kick drum you edited.
If you wish to save and keep internally, press WRITE.

In the past tense, dbijoux had started up an interesting thread.
Look into the highlighted link below, for your final completion of edits ;)

@KRE8A
Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. I found that when I edit the rhythm patch in performance mode the changes stick and I could not explain it.

I will read DBIJOUX's thread for more info

thanks to everyone for your help :-)
