Performance Part select strangeness

Performance Part select strangeness

19 May 2010, 00:15
Hey guys,

I am just wondering what I am doing wrong here.

I have created a new performance using PRST 002 Seq:Template.

I then enter the part select window and select a part for track 1, say an electric piano.

I then try to select a bass patch for part 2 and notice that part 1 immediately changes to the part I have just selected for part 2, when I hit the enter key.

The result is that after changing part 2, part 1 and 2 are exactly the same.

if I go back and change part 1 back to the piano, part 2 changes with it.

What do ?

Hi,
that´s quite strange.....I have never experienced this.
Try to make performance from INITPERFORMANCE and not from the preset one......well it should be no difference in fact but it is worth trying ;)
BTW....aren´t there any MIDI messages coming to your JUNO? ....for example from the PC?

hey mconeil

I have decoupled the JUNO form my DAW. I am pretty sure that I am not getting messages from the computer.

I did not use the [init] function on my performance. In the tutorials I have read this step has not been part of the process.

(The tutorial steps (RolandUS.com has workshops that describe this process) seem to be to select the Performance Preset 002 Seq:Template , save it into a user location and dive straight into making changes.)

I loaded up my performance and hit shift + [init] (F6) and found that I could make the part selection more reliably, but I must also say that I had spent most of yesterday reading and had changed my approach to making the part selections.

Previously I was using the function key to access the part select screen directly from the performance screen, and yesterday I used the Part mixer button to access the part mixer, specifically selected the part I wanted to change in the part mixer, and then from there used the part select function key to access the patches.

Many thanks for your advice.

There is an easier way, just hit enter from the MIDI Track screen(EDIT-SONG).

I couldn't get the same effect you did using Part View or Patch List from the main Performance screen, but I didn't mess around with it very much. Maybe you weren't on the right Part #.

Of course you should be able to use Seq:Template too - like mconeil said it's no different.

thanks dbijoux,

I am not close to the JUNO now and will try your suggestion of making the selection through the MIDI Track screen later today.

I have been thinking about this all morning, and I think my issue relates to the following workflow:

1) I open the part mixer and select part 1.
2) I then press part select and make a change for part 1
3) I immediately make a change to part 2 while I am in the same window
4) Both parts 1 and 2 change to the newly selected patch.

I think that because I have selected part 1 in the part mixer, and try to make a change to part 2 in the part select screen, both parts 1 and 2 change to the newly selected patch. (I must confirm this)

What has changed is that I first select a part in the part mixer before I try and make a change to that part in the part select screen. That is, I select part 1 in part mixer, and then press the part select function key and choose a patch for the part, then go back to the part mixer, select part 2 and then press the part select function key and choose and patch for the part and so on.

I followed this pattern last night and successfully made changes to all 16 parts in my performance.

(I guess, as per your suggestion, I could do the same thing by ensuring that I have actually selected the relevant part in the midi track screen before trying to make a change to that track's part)

thanks for yours and everyones help. I feel I have made a real step forward today :-) !!

No problem mate, as long as you get it sorted and working the way you like. As it is, there are about a million and one ways to change the patches in Performance Mode.
