External MIDI Keyboard always play the selected channel inst

Hello,

FIRST OF ALL A HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU ;)

On my FANTOM XA , I have added a external MIDI KEYBOARD , this keyboard is setup on channel 16 , but when I connect it to the FANTOM XA , it does not matter the channel I put on.

In other words , the external keyboard and local keyboard play the same instrument.
I would like to have one instrument on the FANTOM and a other instrument from the external MIDI.

I think this is possible , but I do not know why :(

I have test on my MAC and LOGIC PRO 8 , to see what I was sending and it send the channel 16.

It seams that the FANTOM XA is merging all channels to channel 1.

Thank you for your help,
Didier.

Does the Xa have 'Remote Keyboard' setting like the X (somewhere under the System menu)? If so make sure that it is turned OFF, otherwise the external MIDI keyboard will do _exactly_ the same as the internal keyboard regardless of it's MIDI transmit channel.

Hello Arjan,

Yes , I found this switch , thank you ;)

But , when this is OFF , I have no sound :(
I would like to re route it to a other channel , I do not know if this is possible ?

Than you again for your help.
Best Regards,
Didier.

Hi

Are you in performance or patch mode?

You'll need to be in performance mode to have different sounds on multiple MIDI channels on the Xa: push the "layer/split" or "mixer" button to do this.

Assuming you've done this, the Xa does have a strange quirk, in that whatever sound is the "current part" will always be heard, even if the external keyboard is not sending on that MIDI channel. The "current part" is the one you can see the part number for on the "layer/split" view - e.g. it says "part 1".

So, for example, if "part 1" is selected as the current part, this will still sound when you play the external keyboard, even if that is sending data to the Xa on MIDI channel 16.

There doesn't see, to be any way of changing that, so I just always mute part 1 in my performances to work around this problem.

Hope that helps
Nick

Hi Nick,

I fully understand what you mean and yes , I am in PERFORMANCE MODE, but what I would like to archive is to use the FANTOM XA to play PART 1 and the M-AUDIO to play PART 16.

Again , if I connect both FANTOM XA and M-AUDIO to LOGIC PRO , it do what I need but , I would like to do the same without computer , even if I use a MAC it is still a computer , and I believe more in the stability of my ROLAND than in a computer ;)

Thank You Again for your help ;)

Best Regards,
Didier.

Hello My Friends,

I just found it ;)

Arjan told me to put the "Remote Keyboard Switch" to OFF , this is correct.
Nick told me to be in PERFORMANCE MODE , also correct.
But , If USB MODE is set to MIDI , it does not work.
It have to be on STORAGE MODE.

I hope this info will also be useful for others ;)

Thank you again for your great help.
Best Regards,
Didier
