Using my Fantom X as a sound card????

Using my Fantom X as a sound card????

13 Oct 2009, 19:03
Hi there.
Does anyone know if I can use my Fantom X as a USB audio interface?
Most of my past recording have been hardware based but I would like to start using a copy of Cubase. i have recorded some audio using just the computer and had problems with latency. Someone told me it maybe the soundcard in the computer and an ext soundcard would solve this problem. I have seen the Yamaha Audiogram 3 which seems very good for the money, but do I realy need it or can I do the same with my keyboard's USB port.
Someone please help and please keep in simple. I'm fine with keyboards but software and computers freaks me out a little.

Many thanks
Doug

Hi dougdixon,

Did you try ASIO4ALL?
It works great on my laptop with minimal latency.
Google it.

Fantom X cannot work as audio card

There is no USB Audio support on the X. Its USB interface only supports DATA or MIDI

Hik Paulo,

I want to use the fantom x6 as a external instrument to be able to record midi.
Do you know about the connection with sonar 7.0 ?
Does the USB connection have some restriction?

I am having some problem with my f-X6 and sonar 7.
It seems that you dont have a problem working with them.
Let me explain it to you so you maybe could help me.

The ploblem is: I am not getting any sound.
- My fantom is working fine as a midi controller, when i choose some vst as midi out.

- I´ve installed the new device and import the patch/banks (.ins file)

NO SOUND WHEN:
- it is recording the midi signal, but no sound when i play that track when my fantom x6 is connecter in midi out.
midi in: omni or fantom
midi out: fantom x6

Very strange because it is recording the midi signal but no sound comes out of it (in cubase and sonar too).

I am working midi using an USB cable.
Do you think could be that? My external audio interface doesn´t have midi connections, thats why i haven´t tried using midi cables.

Thanks in advance.

Let me try to make this clear:
The USB conection on the Fantom X is used for data transfer and for MIDI comunication. You cannot use the USB conection to record AUDIO. To record the actual sound from the Fantom X you need to plug the Fantoms OUTPUT to an audio interface.
The others thing is:
If you want to record MIDI in Sonar and use the Fantom X as an sound sorce, you have to select a MIDI track in Sonar and select the Fantom X as output.

Thanks V-CeeOh,

That´s right, i wanto to record midi, using fantom x6 and generating its sounds.
In Sonar everything is right, fantom midi in / fantom midi out.
The problem is that i cannot hear any sound when i play the track when the midi out is conected the fantom x6.
Otherwise, i hear what i play when i connect any vst instrument as midi out.

I am wondering if i will need to use midi cables, insted USB to make this connection.

No you don't ned no MIDI cable if you're sure the USB conection is alright.
So when you hit record (in a MIDI track) and play on the Fantom you see that Sonar is recording the notes, right?
Do you hear the Fantom playing when you hit record? or you just see the notes on Sonar?

Oh, and I see you're repeating the same question on several threads. Please don't do that here at the Clan. Be patient ;-)

I am working in Cubase from version VST24, about 10 years I say...
So if you need something to know, just ask, but... don't mess with our heads with nonsens questions...
1. The usb is only a MIDI link between fantom and cubase, meaning that you can use it only for controling when and what your fantom should sing, from cubase.
2. if you want to record it audio, you'll need an audio interface (take the cheapest but preoffesional : m-audio audiophile 2496) and make an audio track, and record the fantom thru audio out (analog or spdif) as you play the midi project.
3. The best is to record thru SPDIF (limited at 24bit /44100Hz but is digital so you have no loss of quality)
Do not ever be ashamed of what you are, what you feel, and what you think. The truth hurts, but it is necessary.

Man...
Maybe you don't use the Performance Mode... or you don't know how to set you performance on midi channel...
or better... you don't set your midi out as fantom-x

I use fantom-xr thru midi out not usb.
maybe you have selected as midi out, other midi output, and not the fantom-x, or your fantom-x is in patch mode, so it can receive only on the channel midi set for patch mode.
