TEST your Fanton G knowledge!!

The title was just to get you to read the post, and hopefully you know a lot if you are here. I have been trying to find out if anyone uses the FC-300 foot controller with the G, and if so how useful is the thing. Also, is there any new update on the 1 Gig DIMM memory? Did Roland ever release what they said would fit it, or is everyone else trying whatever they can find? All I can find is ECC, no NON ECC just yet. Thanks!

Hi G8owner14, welcome to Roland Clan!

Arjan did a good bit of research on the FC-300 here. Also if you click on his name you will see a link to his home page I’m sure he won’t mind answering a few questions for you.

Enjoy the Forum!

G8owner14,

I think I saw your previous post where you asked te same question and I intended to direct you to the very link that Zephyer provided but never got around to do it and then forgot. So thank you Zephyer.

I have used the FC-300 a few times now with my Fantom X exactly as I describe in my last post in that thread. What I found is that, in the heat of the moment, it can be somewhat difficult to press down on the correct pedal at the right time. They are, at least for my feet, spaced somewhat close together and fairly trigger happy.

Also I have not been able to find a way to use the pedals to select a Favourite from the _current_ bank. And unfortunately the duplex communication feature only works with the V-Guitar system, ie the FC-300 does not recognize PC messages from the Fantom and doesn't sync to show the same PG#.

All in all it's far from ideal but it does work. To be honest I haven't had much practice with it because we've stopped rehearsing in favor of spending our time in the studio to record our new CD.

The original Fantom G firmware did not allow for changing favorites through the F1-F8 keys, you had to use the pads. But as of 1.10 you can directly select favorites that way. I'm inclined to think that that, combined with the ability to go a favorite up (and down if you can spare the expression input) using a hold pedal that might work better, at least for me. But as of yet I don't have a G, I'm waiting for Roland to fix some annoying bugs (that might be fixed in 1.20 but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet).

Thanks! For those of you who feel tricked, sorry. I was trying to get some of the guys I read the most from on here, namely jessej, zephyer and arjan, to answer my question. Thanks so much to you guys, I will read about the FC-300 now. I am currently using an old Kurzweil 2 switch pedal from my PC88, and it is set for favorite up and down through the foot controller 1 and 2 outputs. That just leaves me with a sustain pedal and no more outputs, hence the attempt to tie in the FC-300. Wanted to know a little more before I bought it though. Thanks so much to you guys for all the posts. As mainl;y a studio nerd and just a piano player (no midi, audio man here), alot of the midi stuff gets hairy from time to time. Thanks for the help! If I owed you thirty seconds and you read this I know owe you about 1 minute and 30 seconds, good luck getting it back! Someone owe me hours for all the reading I have done, although the great answers and ideas are enough of payment for me!
