Need new strings - stock strings suck (FantomS)

Okay, I'm kinda sick of the stock string patches in the fantom S. The waveforms themselves suck and no matter what editing I do, there's no fixing. They just sound bland, boring and very much pad-esque.

I want bright, rich strings that'll cut through in a live band like butter. Strings with full attack and a lot of high end to cut through the mix - thats what i'm looking for.

Any soundfonts out there that'll do the job (so i can sample em to the fantom S?)

Thank you!

... when you find your Free awesome sounds Sam, Im interested too.

Are you using this stuff for Indian music string arrangements? If that's true, then Im sure you'll find the SRX-06 more to your tastes (Yeah, it's not free, but it's awesome). I've been using this for the songs we do, and it's amazing how it cuts through the mix.

Later ..

Thanks for the ideas folks...Programming works only when the base samples are good to start out with. With that lacking, there's nothing I can do to make it better. I've tried layering and all that.

The solution I got is to sample the strings from the kirk hunter CDs for gigastudio with the room convolution ON. It sounds goooood - very strong and bright.

manish, I need this for the live gigs (indian music). For studio use I got miroslav from IK multimedia and gigastudio.

I also have ultimate strings from roland, and I can try sampling that into the fantom S.

.... I am on the hunt for fresh strings sounds as well. As you mentioned, I need very responsive strings, since they're not used as pads, but as a solo instrument along with the backing polyphony.

I agree that the sounds on the Fantom could be better, but they work for me for now (I hate extra load times, and loading samples before the gig, especially if something goes wrong and I have to restart the Fantom), and I primarily use SRX-06 for all my strings, brass, flute. I use the SRX-09 for other ethnic stuff, like santoor, sitar (with heavy tweaking of course ;)!!).

I will check out the stuff that you mentioned ... thanks again!!

I hate loading times too. :-(

But I think I'll just sample the kirk hunter samples. They're damn good through gigastudio's convolution processor.

Now thats an idea ....

... Are the same samples available for Logic (EXSP24)? Maybe I should try sampling (In logic) just what I need for certain sounds onto a flash card, and using just that to cut down the loading times or something.

I gave up on the PC/Windows workflow a while ago (and went to the MAC), but now seeing some of the sound libraries available, I sometimes think I should have persisted ;)!!

But no regrets ... the show must go on ;)!!

Thanks Sam ... Have you looked at Vienna, I've heard they're pretty good too.

Sam,

While you are waiting for your SRX boards, you should SERIOUSLY look at Andy Keys' suggestion. A nice way to get some PHAT strings is to use a sample on one tone, and mix in detuned saws on the second and third tones. The slight "synthetic" character of the finely detuned saws will give your strings an extra dimension.

I have to agree with Andy. These synths are powerful and many time our answers to what we need lie within the instrument itself.

I read - I think it was either in EM or Keyboard - some years ago that 95% of synth owners do not program their own sounds. Also, only a very small percentage even do any minor tweaking. Well, it seems that those statistics bear out. Back in the day before we had affordable sampling and multisampling, cottage industries sprouted up that created patches for synths. Look through any older Keyboard mag and see the beginnings of companies like Kid Nepro, ProRec, and others. They are still around and doing the same service today and including sampling as well.

Best,

I've programmed my own patches before and was very pleased with the results, but just not acoustic patches. I've tweaked the acoustic patches, layered, etc. but to no avail.

I'll try the layered saws approach but if that doesn't work, sampling the strings will be much better I'd think. I'm looking for realistic strings with a strong attack, not something pad-ish or soft.

Manish, i'm afraid they're not available for EXS24. I have miroslav philharmonik, so you can get that if you want.

Infact IK multimedia is selling Miroslav CE for 99$. That's your best bet.
