Remote Trigger RPS via MIDI, can it be done ?

Remote Trigger RPS via MIDI, can it be done ?

Is it possible to remotele trigger RPS via MIDI ?
I'm trying to do it now from my PC, but for now I can't get it to work.

In live playing with my band the drummer triggers loops via midi on my Korg Triton. Since my Triton is broken, I bought the X7. I was hoping to achieve the same 'trick'

To clarify, we use this 'setup' in live playing situations.
I create an 'empty' sequence with only a click track.
I create a number of loops.
Click is routed to alternate output of the synth -> Mixer -> Headphone
Drummer triggers loops via MIDI using a Roland drum/sample thingy (dunno the name :-) )

I hope that someone can help me out.

If I'm not mistaken:

1) Create click-track and assign to proper output
2) Create needed patterns
3) Turn on RPS
4) Assign rps-patterns to keys. Keys can be outside normal accessible keyrange of the X7 if you need to play the keyboard as well at the same time.
5) Trigger rps-patterns by sending MIDI note-events for needed key/pattern combo from the drum/sample thingy.

Caveat: I havent tried this myself, so I may be talking out of my rear end.

assigning patterns to key's and trigger them via midi didn't work
:(

Bugger!
I could have used that.

Luctor, had you turned on the remote keyboard switch? If you want key data coming in through MIDI to trigger an RPS pattern then the remote keyboard switch has to be set to "on".

just switched the 'remote keyboard' on and it doesn't seem to make any difference

You may have other issues causing a problem here. Luctor, is the note being played on the Fantom but RPS not being triggered? I am trying to help you determine if the correct data is making its way to the Fantom.

Andy, this really should work so try it yourself. My setup uses this so I think there is something else wrong here in Luctor's setup.

Currently I'm testing this on my PC running UbuntuStudio Linux and Rosegarden sequencer (aka Cubase for Linux :) )

When I click keys in the matrix (piano-roll) editor I can hear the notes play, but no RPS patterns are triggered.
I've tried sending on channel 10 and channel 1

Currently I'm using the USB-MIDI driver (USB cable) ; would using the 'normal' MIDI ports make any difference ?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I didn't save the performance
Here's the workflow
1) Init Performance
2) Edit Performance
3) Enter Song Edit -> Pattern Mode
4) Create / Edit Patterns
5) Setup RPS , assign Patterns to Pads and/or Keys
6) Save the song not the Performance
Transmitting on channel 16 solved it :-)

Performance Control Channel : 16

I send my MIDI messages on channel 1. I guess all that matters at this point is that you got it working.

Also, you need to make sure that you turn on RPS. After you save the song or load the song the RPS status light turns off. You need to remember to always put it back on. One of the moderators here found a way to get a song file to remember the RPS on/off status as he explains on this thread. You can download the batch from the post where he says that he should have "zipped'em".

If the drummer has it's own midi "thingy" isn't easier just to send the midi clock signal out to the drummer? You just have to save the right tempo in each performance (or song). He can use his own click track sounds then (saves you making a sequence) and even can have visual feedback (if his device also has a blinking light like the fantom has).
Just an idea...

Found out it is indeed the remote keyboard switch, the MIDI channel doesn't make a difference then ..

Which kind of sucks, because my second keyboard (Hammond XB1) that I use to play via MIDI on my 'main' keyboard (formerly a Korg Triton) also triggers notes on channel 1. And that's not what I want ...

(Am I making myself clear ?)

This is a limitation that is caused by needing to have the remote keyboard switch on in order to trigger RPS. I wish you could assign RPS to a specific MIDI channel so you wouldn't need the remote keyboard switch to be set to on for it to work. I had several discussions with various Roland Reps asking them to do this and hoped the G would do this. Instead they dropped RPS keyboard assignments from the G altogether.

Anyhow, I have not found any workaround so you have to choose. Do you want to play sounds remotely which are played on one channel or do you want to trigger RPS.

Just discovered the 'Mute Group' function, which could reduce a lot of my rps work .. (switch loops on and off)
Also a big difference between the Triton and the Fantom is the fact that one rps loop can play on all 16 midi channels; this is great! The Triton assigns the loop to only 1 part.

I think the 'Mute Group' function combined with the ability to play multiple channels in one pattern will remove the need to trigger loops remotely.

Good work, Luctor. No synth is perfect but it is about finding a way to get it to do what you need it to do. Just remember, the patterns which are muted still use voices even if you are not hearing the sound. This means that it will still reduce some polyphony but perhaps this is not a big issue in your setup.
