Problems sequencing Hold events

Problems sequencing Hold events

8 Mar 2008, 11:30
I suddenly have troubles recording sounds using the hold pedal. While playing everything sounds OK, but playing back the sequence is horrible. When I look into the recorded events there are dozens of Hold events, a lot more than I pressed or released the pedal. Even stranger: also hold values of 125, 126 and 1,2, 3 instead of the expected 0 and 127. It might have to do something with an external keyboard cause it only seems to happen (have to test that again, not 100% sure) on the channel that keyboard sends MIDI data to. Anyhow, there's no difference if I record from the external keyboard or the internal keyboard on that channel. Any ideas?

It is normal. You can see the gradient of the hold pedal below the piano rioll view when you select one of the hold CC.

Hi Maureez!

If you are recording piano in Patch mode, because you are using a single MIDI channel to record events, you will find that layered sustain events will cancel eachother out with each subsequent recording.

If you are recording piano in Performance mode, make sure to use a separate track (and therefore a separate MIDI channel) for each layer of your recording. Sustain events recorded will now remain unique to that track.

Just an additional tip when using sustain for recording piano / the Fanom X allows you to choose a 'Continuous Hold' feature which records pedal functions in smaller increments (from 0 to 127) than the default setting, allowing for half-damping or feather pedaling. Normally, hold functions are either 'On'(value=127) or 'Off'(value=0). The advantage to "On or Off' is that sustain events are much easier to edit. The disadvantage is that the sustain effect does not respond as much like a piano sustain.

Sounds to me like your continuous hold pedal setting is on. There are 2 things that can be done to remedy this situation.
1) There is a switch on your pedal that can be set to 'switch'
2) Under System Set-up - Pedal/DBeam - set your 'Continuous Hold Pedal' to OFF

Hope that helps you!

Thanks Pianowguy! The continuous hold pedal setting was new to me, I'm sure to disable it, it saves me 100s of hold events and my pedal isn't capable of half damping anyway.

Problem with the masterkeyboard was solved, it is capable of sending on 2 midi channels. When I recorded on the second channel I disabled sending on the first channel. It seems only the hold events are still sent by the keyboard! So I had to remove all channel 1 events on part 2 in the sequencer (being only hold events) and it was perfect again.
