Digital Distortion on Audio from JUNO-G USB Storage to PC

5 Feb 2008, 11:28
Just like the topic says..
When I hook the Juno up to my PC via USB Storage mode and copy files from the Roland/Smpl directory onto my HD, I get high levels of completely clipped digital distortion.
the first second or so of the audio files will play followed by the distortion.

I searched the forum and cant seem to find anyone else thus far that posted this issue, although I bet for certain someone has had it.

At any rate, I did test and make sure that I can go the other way, sending 16bit 44.1hkz samples from my PC to the Juno G via Tmp/Import Audio on the CF card and that works NO PROB.

but cant go from the CF card samples to the PC.

Suggestions?

I've transfered only a couple of files from Juno to PC and they have been OK. Your posts makes me want to check files of all sizes now... I've had endless niggles with my Juno G. I get low-level high-pitched digital noise through my monitors as soon as I connect my USB cable! Do you get this???

I don't think I get this noise when what's connected is PC - Juno G - Monitors, but when the Juno G audio out is plugged via my Steinberg MI4 audio interface (USB to PC) then onto monitors, as would be normal to record the synth, I hear noise. I believe there is some kind of loop. I notice changes or short breaks in the noise when the PC redraws sceens or loads programs, especially audio programs, but I have never noticed this before, and despite not having any eletrical knowledge to base it on, can't help but want to point the finger of blame at the Juno G, somehow in it's earthing, or internal electrical wiring, or a dodgy USB port on it!

At least there is a work around, to some degree, in the Juno's internal mixdown possibilities... so long as I don't get the same problem you describe... I won't hold my breath! However, it's damn irritating that the noise is too distracting to have the the Juno connected via MIDI USB as a controller into Cubase (MIDI to another keyboard then on to PC works fine, somehow losing the noise). And of course, the prospect of using the PC editor is ruined by the distraction!

Any ideas? Anyone else find this?

Hi RubJuno,

I had a slighty similar problem with distored/choppy sound although it was on the final mixed down audio only. Apparently the memory module I bought was not exactly compatible with the junog. Junog requires non-buffered, non-eec, PC 133 to get clear sampled audio.

Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

I knew I shouldn't count my chickens, I HAVE just experienced what you described, which reminded my I HAD experienced this the first time I ever transfered a sample to PC. But I have found a solution (hopefully it always works!) If I hook up via USB and try to listen to the sample straight away in Windows Media Player, having clicked on the file as it first appears on the PC screen (which I guess is likely actually streaming from within the Juno.... i think I assumed folders were automatically transfered to the PC, but clearly what we're seeing is the contents of the juno) I get the couple of seconds of perfect audio, followed by awful loud noise. I copied the file to My Documents and had the same problem when trying to play it from there. But I knew I had transfered other files before with no problem. I deleted the file I'd copied, broke the USB connection and started again from scratch, NOT ATTEMPTING to play the file on the PC until I had transfered it. THAT works fine. But what I don't understand is why, in having unthinkingly tried to stream it from within the Juno, via WMP, it corrupts, and then even somehow corrupts the file copied to the PC, yet doesn't harm the original file still remaining in the Juno. To copy THEN listen seems, for me, to work as it should, the file is perfect.
Hope this works for you too!

No no, my audio/samples are perfect, I jsut get some kind of constant distirtion when the Juno is attached to my PC by both audio connections AND usb simultaneously, clearly there is some kind of electrical loop problem, I can here the PC do things, redraw screens, open programs, the noise changes... but I wonder if it's the Juno's grounding/internal wiring/dodgy USB socket to blame, or just an inevitable loop problem with no individual components at fault. I'm reluctant to blame the PC or Steinberg MI4 interface in the equation since I've never had this problem before. Not one device (synth) attached both by audio/usb simultaneously, though I have had various configurations of USB cntroller keyboards and external synth modules connected altogether.
Man Rob You Nailed it bro!

I tried what you said.. actually after reading it and not having thought about it.. i realized i did the same thing as you did. When I first connected the Juno and attempted opening some of the files in WinMediaPlayer first and THEN copied them onto my C drive when I heard the Distortion. It never even occurred to me that i didn't copy directly to the HD FIRST. But I tried it and NO distortion. I can even Stream the Wave files via Wavelab directly from the Juno in USB/Storage mode, and then Open them and even save directly back to the Juno via USB storage mode as well. (as opposed to saving the file to the pc and then Copying the newly saved version over via USB storage mode)

Anyway , THANKS rob.. that helped for sure!
