Why Buy A Rack

Why Buy A Rack

18 Nov 2007, 22:28
Can some in lay terms tell me why I should buy a Fantom Rack? I am pretty experienced with the Fantom X6, but I don't know a thing about a rack or what a rack does. The salesman in the store told me that it does nothing but off a different way to process the sounds that are already there. I can't really believe that. He suggested I buy an additional sound module which I did. I was pretty happy with that but I'm still looking at this rack. Tell me why it is so great or why I should leave it alone.

Hi Perry,

a rack version of instruments is offered for people who already use a keyboard (synth or masterkeyboard) and want to use another device without needing an extra keyboard for playing.

If you e.g. already own a non-Roland keyboard, but would like to use Fantom sounds as well, you buy the rack. As a little extra, it has two more SRX slots than a Fantom X.

So, if you already own a FantomX, in most cases it makes no sense to buy the Fantom rack as well.
Exceptions: if you need more srx libraries or are running short, while playing many sounds/effects at the same time.

It's simple as that...

It's also worth considering using rack of other model or manufacturers to wide sonic possibilities. MotifES rack seems a good fit for F-X imho. It gives 1024 more presets, more 128 oscillators, up 2 PLG boards, an extra arp with lots of presets,
And SPDIF connection directly to Fantom-X.

Art go suck on a lemon you idiot. You are a stinking nerd.

Thanks. That is extremely helpful information for me. May save me a bundle. the rack costs almost as much as the keyboard. Really appreciate your reply and the way you did it.
Perry L.
Thanks. I'll look into the possibility of investing in the Motif rack.

Perry,

Read the forum policy about name calling or I'll zap all of your posts.

Bass,
You can zap all of my posts now. I won't return. The truth is that Art is the reason I stopped communicating for quite a while. There is a subtle but very rude way that he responds to people that in my estimation are much worse than name calling and he crossed that line a year or two ago and rather than respond, I took it on the cheek and let it ride because that's who I am. The music in my soul is not normally confrontational or rude but kind and considerate. Unfortunately, being unnecessarily rude is not in your policies and I don't need the site anyway. I am into positive growth and development, not in the kind of negative feedback I received from Art. So because this is my time communicating on this site I will not see any responses you have. So zap anything you want to. Good-bye forever.

Unfortunately, in my opinion Perry took a tongue-in-cheek response rather seriously.

There's a lot of work that goes into maintaining this site. Moving posts to the proper section is one of those tasks that falls in the "this is a pain but has to be done" category for Art and the Mods. That's why we constantly remind folks to post in the correct section and not to double post.

As the forum and the number of posts grows, this becomes more relevant just from the basic sense of data management, organization, and search parameters.

There are times when I have taken a member's post and used it as an 'example' for others in what not to do. Sometimes a 'touch' of sarcasm can deliver a non-harmful message. That's the way I saw this incident.

The choice to participate here has always been an individual choice for each member. There are no membership fees or dues here.

I personally find that the core of participants here exhibit some of the best interaction and behavior I've found anywhere on the Internet for a forum of this type. I also feel that Art and the Mods (maybe excluding myself ;-) ) manage the site without being overly rude. With all of the varied cultures here, this place does surprisingly well!

But we do have our moments. . . . . .

You're okay. I read this thread because I already own an Alesis QSR rackmount module and haven't tried integrating it with my X6 yet. I find arguments mildly entertaining anyway. They're sort of like hockey games without the ice.

Fanthom X Rack

There is one lcally avaiable and pretty cheap. I already own a Fanthom X. Here is my question. Can I hook my laptop up to the Rack and use Sonar to control midi tracks and use the RACK Fanthom X sounds? Then I can play along on my Fanthom X keyboard have two seperate sound sources - The Rack playing my midi files and me playing live The Fhantom X? Does this make sense and is it a valid idea. I also have a eperate keyboard the Roland RS 50 I use as a 2nd keybord live for certain sounds etc. ANy suggestions.

It's a valid idea as it will work. However why don't use FantomX's build sequencer to play midi and control your rack synths?

Fanthom X Rack

Thanks. Here is why I don't use FantomX's build sequencer to play midi and control rack synths.

I dont have any rack synths I am thinking of buying the Fanthom X rack - I already own a Fanthom X and a Roland - RS-50

WHat I am thinking of doing is having the laptop play my midi files - (hundreds of midi files) on the Fanthom rack using SONAR and let my two keyboards be free so I can play along using performances and splits I have created or be able to freely change patches as I play on the keyboard with out interfering with the midi files or changing the soungs of the midi file etc.

Also I am not to familiar with the build sequencer yet. I have hads the Fanthom for about a year and still have not been able to master the midi aspect of things. I will be revisiting the Tutorials and Videos on the Fanthom over the holidays.

I have accedently erased all my splits and user patches and samples twice in the past year when hooking the Fanthom up to the laprtop via USB so I do not want to risk that again.

I am also thinking of having a midi keyborad guru come over to my house and pay him to hook this up and get it all working properly. THere is a guy in my area who makes house visits.

All I want to do is have the Rack paly the midi file and have all instruments and sounds the same way everythime I load a file and be free to play what ever I want as accompanyment on the Fanthom X keyboard.

Does this make sense anybody please advise

thanks

Then SonicCell could be a better choice than FantomXR perhaps? It has build in midi and mp3 player plus basically the same synth engine as in FantomX (plus two SRX expansion slots and USB audio interface),
