loading a song from memory card takes 4 mins [Juno G]

loading a song from memory card takes 4 mins [Juno G]

I've found loading a song (and saving a song) to memory card seems to be taking longer and longer even though the card is 85% free. I just timed it at just over 4 minutes to load a song that is only one minute in length, consisting of 3 parts including one audio track (stereo). Is this normal?

It is possible the loading as slowed down since I installed 512 megs of ram. Is this likely?

The card is bog standard as I don't know how fast a card it can take. Will I see significantly improved performance if I buy a better card.

Check how big the audio is.

Audios are loaded as samples, and that means *very* slow in the outdated file system of a Fantom/Juno G.

Hi Jimknopf,

i do not own a juno-g but a mc-808 which is very close to the juno-g from hardware. The mc-808 is also very slow when reading from compact flash cards. Experiments have shown that faster cards to not speed up the loading process cause the bottleneck is the controller on the roland board.

Ciao, Dirk.

Yes, that's a plausible explanantion. Never thought about the hardware controller.

But I guess that a file system, which looks to me like an outdated 8-bit or 16-bit system with short filenames and extremely limited file number capacities will have its share in causing such an extremely lame loading performance...

Are you preloading the samples when the Fantom boots?

Because if you are, 4 minutes is WAY TOO LONG for a song to load ... or does that figure include sample loading time?

It is loading the audio track that takes the time. If I just load the song, it takes seconds, but song + sample = 4 mins. The sample is an audio track taken from my xiosynth.

Load the song, then the individual sample that you need. Don't load samples at startup, turn that option off.

I think Diametro is on the right track. . . . . you are probably loading ALL samples with the song.

Hook your Fantom to the computer and copy the files you don't need but want to save to your computer ... then ON THE FANTOM ONLY!!!, delete the files using the file utility or marking and deleting the samples ... NEVER delete or move Fantom files with using USB on your computer (bad things will happen to your files on the CF card) ...

Keeping a tidy CF card makes loading samples faster ... I always load ALL SAMPLES before starting a Fantom X session ...
