The Next Fantom (Roland) Workstation?

Re: The Next Fantom (Roland) Workstation?

Funny, when I think of Roland's new flagship workstation, I don't think soundset first, I think what the board can do.
I agree the Fantom X stock sounds are awful.
XV-5080 stock is much better (that's why I'll keep mine)
And I do think Roland will have to improve their stock soundset to maintain their numbers

s.asad , you and i are own the same page, i know what the Fantom x can do, it's those stock sounds! and Big brotha
Motown, thats the guy i couldn't think of,Eric Persing worthy stock soundset. thats the guy they need to put on the next
workstation Eric Persing.

Well, the thing that I left off of my wish list is the virtual organ that is on the RD700SX. I would love to have that on a synth action fantom with a touch screen to control the drawbars.

V-CeeOh,
thanks for clarification, I'm rather musician type then technician so I just want to sit, pick a patch and play. Spending hours on tweaking sounds is not for me.

I'm getting mixed messages here.

You don't want to tweak for hours, but you want the Fantom to be more VA than it already is??

If you just want to grab one workstation, and it be the best sounding instrument in every catgegory, then you're living in a dream world.

I think the Fantom is the best all around workstation on the market today.... YMMV.

actually if new motif XS had sampler/RPS/sequencer/audio track features of FantomX it would be for me ideal workstation, where I don't need to kill myself to pull out great sound because it is ready for me.

Just a few suggestions....

Fantom X-

24 part Multitimbral-Keep the 8 tracks of audio
256(or more) poly
Smartmedia or Compact flash up to 6+gig.Future proof it.
4 pair Stereo Outs.
Dedicated sus and expression pedal jacks
Breath controller
Dedicated speaker jacks
Rubato Chase function-
Remember the music when Luke Skywalker found the bodies of his aunt and uncle? That's rubato, where strict tempo is abandoned in favor of a more emotional tone.Rubato chase would allow you to sync as many sounds together without the hassle of endless retakes to get it"just right".

Intelligent Tempo-
You play something into a channel without a click and the keyboard gives you a readout in BPM.No more being a slave, trying to mold yourself to the click!

London Symphony Orchestra SRX Board-256 MB of World-Class sounds recorded at Anvil Studios.

Just a few...

Wish:

SRX 13 (or just skip that unlucky # and go to 14)

Big fat synths (not ness. retro).
Give us big fat "Virus" sounding Synths..

please.

I think the new flagship workstation from Roland should stop using current 'SRX' expansion cards.

I tried a Motif XS and I was blown away by the internal Waverom. That is the kind of sound that should come built in, not separate. and use expansion (perhaps) to gain access to analog modeling.

anyway, i think expansion wave roms in romplers are stupid because, being a sampler, you can have the same waveform (or better) with cd sound libraries.

as far as part eqs and more inserts, i totally agree...motif xs rock with individual 2-inserts for upto 8 channels...so the entire authenticity is preserved in pattern mode (from voice mode)..

I think the fantom is a usefull board and i can not see myself selling it for the forseeable future.

What i will say is, if your not happy with what you have and want something better, go get it.

dont wait for ROLAND

If you board is lacking in something, Expand your kit to include what you require.

dont wait for ROLAND

If you want more eq on each channel use a DAW

dont wait for ROLAND

If you want more poly
buy another X or use a DAW

dont wait for ROLAND

The file system(my pet hate!)
You have no choice but to work with it
(read my Fx FileSystem MasterClass)

dont wait for ROLAND

Dont put yourself on hold for that dream machine to come along,
Go buy an Build it.

If ever there were a thread to pose this question it looks like this would be the one.......

I have always used Roland gear, but for my workstation I have always used Korg (Trinity then Triton Studio). Until a couple days ago I had fully intended to buy an M3 w/EXB-Radius. Something made me take a step back and question things though. The timestretching and ability to use audio loops is what really caught my attention on the Fantom X. So now I am at a crossroad where I am heavily examining the M3 and the Fantom X. I am really wanting a single board that I can sit down at and get everything done. I realize that this is an open ended question and that every musician has different needs and uses, but:

Why would YOU buy the Fantom X over the M3 w/EXB-Radius, or vice versa?

Re: The Next Fantom (Roland) Workstation?

Permofryed ...

If the ability to use samples and large blocks of audio freely and without basic restrictions ... the X (or the Korg Oasys) are the only workstations that deliver.

I'm seriously considering an M3 myself (STILL haven't demoed one, though) ... but as a replacement for my Fusion (maybe) -- NOT the Fantom X.

I don't care that you can use the M3 as a VST ... A workstation should have audio tracks if you really want it to WORK ...

And I've heard the piano on the M3 is typically Korg ... (I need a workstation with a very good, warm realistic-sounding piano; i know, I know, hearsay ... but certainly nobody's raving ... )

Still, I think the M3 has potential to make an amusing (if fairly redundant) counterpart to my X-based setup ...

... but let's face it ... get a Kaoss pad (like I did and even fits on the left side of my X7) and you've got half of the 'wow' factor of the M3 ... get a Fantom X and you've already got more trigger pads ...

... other than the fancy arps of the Karma and some new Korg sounds ... what else does it really have? (not more MIDI tracks, polyphony or multimbral capability, or groundbreaking features ... although the Radias option is cool within a workstation concept ... but who doesn't already have a VA or three?

If you want an all-in-one solution you have two choices: Fantom X or Korg OA$Y$.

Obviously, it's not the direction the M3 and Yamaha XS are going ... but it seems for a growing group of musicians migrating from the computer/electronic music realm, an all-in-one solution that allows them to be away from the computer for as long as desired, THAT's the wave of the future.

It may sound a little sappy, but I could be content making music on my Fantom X for the rest of my life.

The X has EVERYTHING you need ... sure, some thing could be improved/expanded (eq, effects, file system) ... but the main thing is Roland didn't omit anything CRITICAL to a complete music-making process ...

IMO ... the only thing that really needs to get better with the Fantom X is the musician operating it.

Good luck ...

totally agreed on both accounts.

That's why I probably end up with new motif XS6 again plus juno-g
to have audio tracks etc from fantomX.

I went back and spent some time on each board...... I am about to be a convert. No doubt as soon as my Triton Studio and Fusion 6hd sell I will getting the Fantom X. Since I am not going to have the radius expantion I will also need to buy a companion board for vocoding. I am looking at the Korg R3 and the MS2000. I would give anything if the SH-201 had a vocoder in it.
