The Next Fantom (Roland) Workstation?

Look, Lelo ... like I said ... when I searched I saw WAY MORE Tritons and Motifs for sale ...

... if you don't like the sounds in the Fantom X ... fine ... who cares? why post threads about it? writing to Roland would be more useful ...

if the X doesn't have the "radio-ready" sounds you crave so badly ... just move on to your greener pastures and graze there ...

... personally, I do like the sounds in the Fantom X ... even without the SRX cards (I only have one ... SRX-06 Complete Orchestra, which is great) ... and it probably has just about everything you need to make even more great sounds ...

So knock yourself out! And don't grate ...

Lelo,
you're absolutely right, sound on fantomX is outdated
except maybe few sounds like some EPs and piano which I like.
Last whole month I was comparing sounds on new motifXS and fantomX and korg M3 and lets face it - fantom is way behind...
Motif XS sound is just stunning, if not the crappy UI and sequencer/sampler it would be the absolute king. Only because of that I returned it, because I don't want to use computer. But I still miss the sound.
On the other hand I use 90% piano and EP patches which fantom has very good plus it has good keys action so it is still good solution for gigging as long the price drop. Who would pay e.g. 1995$ for fantomX6 if motif XS6 can be bought for 1900$ (I know I bought it)
Proper price for fantom is ~1300 as old motifES6 cost now.
BTW both makes are on ebay in great amount, because people buy motifXS and korg M3.

juno-g definitely sounds more fresh and hip than the fantom-x. motif xs sounds great for acoustic/electronic/pianos/eps, and korg m3 (w/radias esp) sounds good for electronic music.

juno-g sounds great for vintage synth sounds: try playing a depeche mode or pet shop boys song on the juno-g, you will not be disappointed!

it was foolish to return the xs because of 'bad interface'...i thought the interface rocked compared to the ES! only thing is i don't know why yamaha put 'dark' background colors on some screens. you could still brighten it up.

so pretty much what y'all are saying is you're 'preset bunnies' and just use the sounds the manufacturer provides ...

gotcha ya ...

OK!!
All modern synths can be found on ebay.
All modern synths are capable with tweaks to deliver the bollocks.
Personally i find myself cutting out frequencies on chords and non-drum sounds.
I admit it, those combi sounds on korg's are glorious, but my Fantom can deliver everytime if you got your shit together.
Its great you can buy a synth from any manufactor under a grand and it can kick ass .

PS. Roland i would really like individual eq for each part, (so iam not using MFX'S )

"Music is not about matching other people sounds, its about creating your own style
dont try to be or copy others or you wont stand out
you will simply be another one of them and not your own.

The fantom can give you what you need but you first must master your art and your instrument.

Your currently looking for the quick fix, the band in the box.
thats not what the fantom is.
Its more than this and even after several years with it, its still got too much potential that i have only scratched the surface."

I really agree with above words. I realize ROLAND is firstly Capitalist Corporation which bottom lines the money, so any "new" models that supposed to "replace old" is in fact NOT about helping peoples musicianship, but rather its about generating a new market to make new profits over the next 4 year cycle. Musicianship/humanitarian concern is secondary. For any company, getting your money comes first.

I intend to keep my Fantom for many years maybe decades, even if its supposedly "replaced" by new models.

Whether a music instrument is considered "obsolete" is in fact subjective. A good musician will know how to make new sounds and cutting edge music using the same instrument for years.

So called gear lust = victim of capitalist marketing scheme.
I know since I felt so called gear lust before, but I will not fall easily to it next time.

As attractive as new workstations can be, is it really a "must have" ?? Unless you are professionally supporting your whole life as a well-paid rich musician, it is never a must.

fantomX is outdated

I agee with you. I look at a DVD on the FantomX and i love what you can do with it. The sounds are just dated. More insert effects, 8 more would be fine by me

this thread has no purpose, has had no purpose

Re: The Next Fantom (Roland) Workstation?

I thought the purpose of the thread was to test if the fantom is outdated or not.
So far its shown that most peoples fustration is in the expectation of OUT OF BOX EXPERIENCE (OBE) of the fantom they find that the PRESETS are nothing even close to current sounds there for dated and do not inspire creativity.

I also had this experience several years ago and was not impressed with the preset synth sounds.
But lets look at it this way, the preset are factory test sounds, they are not there to inspire

Your real experience comes from when you start to create your own sounds.
Luckly most times i like to use real world instruments which are perfect on the fantom.
but when it comes to the synthetic, you have to ignore the presests completely and be creative.

this is not analog, you cannot do much with the sound except tweaking within some limits.

I guess I'm just wondering how those pros and TV shows that use Fantom X continue to get those fresh sounds that people want to resample and use. I already know the answer and its been mentioned already.

I wasn't thrilled with the preset sounds on the Fantom and didn't buy when I first heard it right when it came out. I was at a GC when they unpackaged one for the first time. It was only a demo as they didn't even have any there to sell. That's how new it was. I thought nope, not going to buy it. I got a chance a few months ago to borrow one from a friend who was selling it on Ebay. Fortunately his price was initially too high and I got to get into it and play with it for about a month. What I learned was that the power and greatness of this keyboard lies in its features and your ability to program your own sounds which is where it shines. Sure it has some issues like everything else but the true power in this keyboard is understanding it and knowing how to put those things together to make it yours and make it work for you. Many other keyboards sound better out of the box but not many, if any, offer you the power of the Fantom X.

I am tempted to purchase a Fantom X but am holding off for the next in the series. Using Roland's history as a guide I expected an announcement last NAMM. It is not sounds that I am waiting on, those can be changed with editing, sampling and a new expansion ROM.

What I am hoping for in the next Fantom is

The control pad from the V-Synth
VA option. Even somethign basic like a SH201 card.
Even more computer integration without computer dependancy.
Either expanded ROM or more slots for SRX cards.

I use the Studio, Strings, Orchestra, World, Keys and Dance a lot with my Fantom 76 and XV-5080. I would love to have a way to shove that all into a single unit along with the Classic EP's. Oh, and add a better Whurly to the wish list for the next Fantom.

but am holding off for the next in the series

11 Jun 2007, 04:53
Forget holding for the latest and greatest..
your just putting your creativity on hold by not purchasing untill the next version.

if money is a consideration, buy used

but dont Wait if you can do now because its not going to happen believed me.
