My new-old D-50

My new-old D-50

4 Apr 2007, 17:18
Well I took the plunge and just brought home this D-50 for $125.00. The keyboard contacts need cleaning and two keys don't make sound but I'll be using it as a sound module. It came with 2 manuals, power cord and Factory sounds card. While I normally prefer virtual analogs I hope to use it now and again for Pads. The presets are pretty laughable and most have that annoying "chiff" PCM sample but I hope to program some good atmospheric pads on it. What struck me about the presets is that there's really not a single good lead sound. Is it possible to program leads on it?
For sure I'll be asking a lot of questions about it as I take a trip back to the '80s in learning how to get around on the thing!

Hard to compare these machines to the new technology. Like comparing apples to oranges. Go to ebay and buy sound cards with different types of sounds. I assure you the D-50, although old school will produce very cool and recognizable sounds used in tons of 80's rock songs.
I have several of these sound cards and I can find a way to reduce them to a medium so that they can be sent through e-mail, I will send them to you and anyone else who desires them.

Need a PG-1000? Prgrammer for D50

5 Apr 2007, 01:02
Voice Crystal was a producer of some of the D50 cards.

I have a PG-1000 hardware programmer for the D series if anyone is interested...

Just for curiousity, how much are you asking for the PG-1000?

Kenny, If you want to send me some D-50 patch banks it would be great. Let me know if you can and I'll PM you my email.

@Gothboy: FYI, this forum has no PM function. However, if you decide to post your email adress, the forum software will encode it as a small PNG image, thus making it difficult for spam email harwesters to find.

Hey Gothboy,

I was digging around my studio and found some floppy disks that have D-50 sounds on it although they are in Macintosh format.

If you have access to this type of computer, post your email address and I will contact you and attempt to forward these sounds to you. I have never listened to these sounds, but they are five floppies filled with them. The reason I have never listened to them is because I never had a Mac available to me.

I also have my D50, D550, and a PG1000 programmer. Never thought about letting them go, but they just sit in cases and are in great condition.

Here's my email so you can send me those presets:
Are they Sysex files?
mabon1@comcast.net

might be interested in the PG-1000, although I really should be using every cent I've got for a newer computer....what do you want for it?

What I really need is an editor/librarian program for Mac...have you ever seen or heard of one?

Gothboy,

Give me a couple of days and I will save the files to my computer, or whatever is on these disks, and will send them to you.

My new computer doesn't have a floppy drive, so that I will have to do this at work. I am off for the next two days and then I will send them. I don't have any type of editor for the Mac, however, I'm relatively sure that you can find one online for free.

As for the PG-1000, I will more than likely let it go when I sell my D-50. I believe this will be a selling point.

OK, sounds good to me! Thanks for the help with the files. I've done lots of searches for a Mac editor and AFAIK none exist.....though there are a few for PC.....but I don't have a PC...so I always ask folks if they have a Mac editor, you never know!

Gothboy,

I tried opening these floppies with my PC and was unable to. E-mail me at kline_km@jpso.com, give me your physical address and I will mail these 7 floppy disks that I have to you. I think that you will need a Mac to open up the files on the disk since it is printed on the disk that they are Macintosh computer disks. I haven't had a Mac in for probably 15 years. If you are able to get them to work, I would simply appreciate for you to put them onto a memory card and I will mail you some empty memory cards that I have and put the sounds onto them as I still have my D50, D550.

I bought these sounds a long time ago and I don't remember if I even got a chance to download them.

Thanks,

Kenny

Kenny,
I'm just posting to let you know that I still haven't received those disks yet. If you haven't gotten around to sending them that's OK. I just wanted to alert you in case you had.

I gave them to my secretary to mail. She told me that she had. I will double check with her.
