Assigning Samples to Pads

I posted this in the "Controllers and Interfaces" forum but got no response so I'll try it here as well. I've been lurking around on the forum for a while, and I have to say I've picked up a lot. This is a great site.
So, I'm new to the Fantom world, just got an XR as an upgrade to my current live configuration, and I'm having some issues with sample assignment. In fact I'm having trouble with getting the samples in to begin with, but I'm trying to work through that myself. I'm using the SR with an M-Audio Axiom 61 controller which has eight assignable pads (similar to the Fantom's keyboard version).
Here's my issue: I need to build performances for live use which use keyboard patches as well as samples which I would like to trigger via the pads... but I can't seem to figure out how to assign these samples to anywhere except the keyboard. I'm assuming I have to set the samples up in PATCH MODE first, but to be honest, the Fantom Manual has my head spinning. I'm also new to MIDI programming so it may be that I'm just completely in OVER my head...
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
