To Limit or Compress?

To Limit or Compress?

Hi guys

I noticed on the FAQs some general advice about using a compressor and limiter for example on drums. I kinda struggle with "effects" side of things and was just wondering if someone could explain "simply" why you would use a compressor as opposed to a limiter and vice versa?

Thanks!

From this online article:

"The only difference between a compressor and a limiter is where you set the ratio control. The range of adjustment on the ratio control can go from 1:1 up to 60:1, 100:1, or, on some units, even infinte:1.

A compressor uses any ratio between 1:1 and 10:1. A limiter uses any ratio from 10:1 to infinte:1. It's that simple. A limiter is a very extreme compressor.
"

You might want to check this very basic article on compressors/limiters as well.
