System 8 end of life? System 1 still in regular use!
7 Feb 2026, 14:20Don't know if Roland have dropped the System 8, but you don't hear much. The much maligned System 1 we've had over 10 years, and we're still using it for the magnificent SH-2 plugout. You can pick the System 1 up pretty cheap 2nd hand if you don't own a System 8, which as you know, will also run the Promars, SH-101 and SH-2 plugouts. But we love the SH-2 plugout, ACB or not, it still sounds great, and makes thumping hard basses, gorgeous bass wobbles and superclean and fat leads that wouldn't be out of place on a Booka Shade tune. You can get an original SH-2 for around a £1000, but we're quite happy with the plugout, rev/delay, scatter and 64 presets. Can't see the System 8 or System 1 ever being chucked away because of the really good plugouts.
Roland could probably make a cheap monosynth with all 3 mono plugouts included, 256 presets each, styled like a mix of the 3 plugouts, and it'd sell really well, we reckon, if it was around £300. They've already made the ACB software so it would just be a case of making a nice vintage looking box. Velocity sensitive keys, and a control to map velocity to filter cutoff. Maybe a T-Rec sequencer that had motion control, maybe a programmable arp, and the sequencer buttons doubling as a favourites from any of the plugouts. There's no reason why you can't do all the SH range, SH-3a, SH-7, SH-9 etc into 1 multiuse ACB monosynth. You'd never need to buy another!
