Overwriting Factory Scenes and Tones?

Overwriting Factory Scenes and Tones?

If you start with a tone and make changes to it, when you go to write the tone, it defaults to the same "slot" that it came from. Does this permanently destroy the original tone, and the only way to avoid this is to first change the default same slot to a new unused slot? Same thing with scenes. If you edit a scene and write it to the same slot, is there a way to get back the original version? I have had my Fantom for awhile now but I was always afraid to try overwriting things and never seeing them again. Thanks!

Yes, if you save it to the same slot it overwrites the factory preset with your changes. There is no easy way to "undo" a single Scene or Tone to restore it to the factory settings. You can, however, do a factory reset in the system settings and return the entire board to its factory state, but you'll lose all changes you've made if you do that.

Agree... I do a "export" type of backup for those scenes and tones I want to preserve.

Then, later I could recover (import) any of them in another free scene (or user tone).
This is the most flexible aproach i found.
Full backup is not a useful option for this because is all or nothing.
Best regards

Thanks for the replies. That is a good suggestion with the backups. I will keep that in mind. It would be great if Roland would have a feature to temporarily reset individual scenes and tones to factory defaults on the fly so you can go back and forth to the saved version and you can reference the original if you want to save it to a new slot and make another variation of it. It wouldn't take up that much memory if it only kept original backups for those scenes and tones that you actually change, or maybe it could pull it from the factory reset storage somehow.

Has anyone done a back-up of all the original tones and scenes? Perhaps the files could be hosted on DropBox and linked to from here? Or maybe Roland could add them to their support section or as a free pack on Roland Cloud?

That would be nice. I guess another alternative is to just not worry about it and go ahead and overwrite whatever you want. Then if you want something back, save the changes you made to a different slot so you can eventually restore the original to the original slot. Do a complete backup of your current stuff. Do a factory reset. Do an export of whatever you wanted to restore. Restore your complete backup. Restore the exported scene/tone.

I'm not sure why nobody here has said this, but the slot that the write defaults to is NOT the original tone. It is a "user" slot with the same number as the original tone. I do this all the time when I need to tweak a tone with more than offsets for a patch I'm working on. You can test it and see that you will still be able to recall the original patch.

Yes! You cannot overwrite the factory tones.

You can overwrite the factory scenes, however.
