Jupiter X advantages over Fantom

Jupiter X advantages over Fantom

It seems the Fantom had many advantages over the Jupiter X from longer scale keyboard, weighted keyboard, more pianos, more authentic pianos, elec piano, strings, etc. With it being a work station as well I am curious what are the things the Jupiter X offers that would make it more appealing to someone shopping for a keyboard? It seems the Fantom also has Jupiter and Juno sounds as well

Wow no responses. I did some investigation and even talk to Roland about it. If you want a synth with all the classic sounds of the Jupiter, Juno, etc plus new sounds and great quality this is the keyboard to get. The sounds on this keyboard are mind blowing. If you want a work station that focuses more on many pianos, elec pianos, strings, pads, plus some syth sounds the Fantom is for you.

Roland Clan goes a little slower than the FB groups. If you want lots of fast opinions, post the question there, or even worse, on GearSlutz. And I think this topic has been pretty thoroughly beat to death there.

Key things in favor of Jupe vs Fantom:
- If you ever owned or wished to own a classic Jupe model, and want that experience. The Jupes, especially the X, are really focused on that experience. You get a preponderance of the original controls, close to original layout. This extends, but to a lesser case, to the other analog synth models.
- simplicity - again, the Jupes focus on the classic Jupe experience. Since this is built on the ZEN-Core foundation, you get all that as well. The Jupe is NOT a workstation, sampler, mixer, sequencer, etc. But this is a good thing.
- more open design - the Jupes have a full midi implementation published, so you can fully integrate with fully configurable DAWs, like CUBASE, or drive everything with Midi Designer Pro 2, even potential create new models. The Jupes will send edit messages as you change parameters, so an external editor will remain synchronized. There is no midi implementation guide for the Fantom, and I have not found a Transmit Edit Function.

The ZEN-Core sound engines are identical, so sound really is not a differentiator. And from Roland Cloud, you can get all the same additional expansions and sound packs. And the analog synth models are claimed to be headed to the Fantoms. Fantom does add SN and V engines, which the Jupes do not have.

I own both the Jupiter X and Fantom 8. They are just different instruments for a different purpose.

Jupiter X is a great performance synth that is ideal to build layered sounds and extensive real time manipulation - OSC, LFO, ENV controls. Fantom doesn't have that layout.

My Fantom 8 is the centerpiece of my studio. My Jupiter X is a synth.

The Jupiter X has models of Jupiter 8, JX8P, SH101 and Juno 106 and they are very good. You could skip the Jupiter and rent those models in Roland Cloud for a monthly fee, run them inside of Mainstage and play them from the Fantom, but it's not the same thing and you need a laptop. I also don't gig on my Fantom 8 because it weighs over 60 pounds.

I did a lot of side-by-side comparisons of the same sounds on the Jupiter X and Fantom 8. They have the same XV sounds and I did the side by test in my studio.

They don't sound identical. The Jupiter X is more hyped sound. It has a more present sound and meant to cut through a band in a stage performance.

The Fantom plays the same sounds more neutral. It's a production workstation. It has plenty of effects, EQ, etc. but a lot of its intended workflow is to export from the Fantom and do the detailed mixing and mastering in a DAW like Logic.
