This could solve the well known issue.

1. pick a key in the drum part, and put down notes for it on every step of the sequence.

2. assign it to a mute group in tone edit.

3. assign another drum sound (sound #2) to the mute group below or above, doesn't matter.

You could do several if they don't need to sound at the same time, like say, hihats (since being in the same mute group prevents them from doing so).

4. now if you press the key from step 1, enter tone edit, and assign it to the same mute group as sound #2, it should (in theory) mute sound #2.

This way you could possibly mute the desired drum[s] without triggering them.

Maybe, not sure, they would make click sounds. Even then it could be used creatively, and it's better than nothing.

That way, sacrificing a few dedicated keys and voices, on every other mute group (since each sound needs two groups, one for the muted state and one unmuted), you have silent drum mutes. Even if it's less than ideal.

This also is in ways better than the method of deactivating the drum partials in Tone Edit mode since it's all in one button press (as opposed to several if you have multiple drum waves layered), and doesn't require triggering the sound.

It's just slightly less accessible, but IIRC the synth might save your menu position, so you'd just need to press Menu.

Need to try this when mine gets home.

It IS possible to mute individual drums while a pattern is playing, but you have to be in tone edit mode for it to work. Select the drum channel, press the whatever drum tone you want to mute on the keyboard, then press button 05 on the step sequencer line.

That is actually the issue for some users. It's possible, but in many cases it's not practical / quick enough to be useful, for example if you're performing live.

I think other threads in this forum mention the idea of connecting the JD-Xi to an external controller, where you would have (for example) a "Mute/Unmute" button and a "Volume" slider for each individual drum or at least some of them.
